Gender is a social construct. I'm still annoyed that it comes into play when you're setting up an RP, but it is what people expect... I can't tell all my players to be androgynes.

I wouldn't say that gender is useless, nor would I say that it is entirely social. Gender roles, maybe, but not the concept of gender itself.

You know how in America and most of the west, women have traditionally been the ones to stay home, and gave been called housewives? Well in Germany, it's not like that. Being a "Hausman" is, and has been fairly common. No one thinks you're a wuss, no one calls you a freeloader, it's great. lol. Also in ancient Egypt women could own land, have positions of office, etc.

Spazzy:: My favorite thing that I've learned about a culture (relating to gender anyway) is about berdache or "two-spirit people". These were Native Americans, usually men, who would dress and act like women, and were allowed to marry men if they wanted, because essentially they had two spirits- one of a man and one of a woman.
Thing is, they weren't social outcasts or anything because of this, they were actually highly respected and sometimes considered to be holy, chosen people. |
I kept one book from one of my university courses titled Women and the Conquest of California because there is a paragraph talking about the Native Americans/First Nations/Indians and how they had at least a dozen different names for gender types, not our binary, and they all seemed respectable, and as you said sometimes 'holy'. I might quote that paragraph on the front page. They really went all out and covered everyone. There would even be a name for Saro's gender role in Native American theory. Our binary... is just too limiting.

As close-knit communities, I wouldn't be surprised at their recognition and acceptance of different gender identities and preferences. It is when communities become too large, when you cannot know everyone's name, when we start to feel the need for a very limited number of stereotypes to keep a social order. Hopefully, the larger societies will learn how to behave despite a bigger gender-ids catalog in a future not so far.

When I was younger... I had toy cars and I had barbies, I had dresses and I had pants.. my hair was short and then long, I never liked the color pink I loved the color blue, my mother supported my 'lack of feminine qualities' whole heartedly while the rest of the family worried about how I would turn out. Currently I love wearing men's shirts and jackets but my hair is longer than most 'girly girls' that I know. Heck I still love toy cars and dolls the same when I was younger, my fiancee is a guy but we both think we were meant to be the other gender because of the qualities we have, mind you i'm more maternal than he is... anyways this is a long post eheh, i'm just happy to be myself no matter if people label me as things i am not or think i should be different. I only own one dress but i have 5 men's shirts and 2-3 men's jackets and i own men's sneakers. sooo... pffft to gender stereotypes for me. ^^; I'll stick with just being me. no matter how 'weird' that is by normal real life standards.
