Hmm, im actually tied between Alice and Emmett for sure. I like most of the Cullens anyways. Especially Jasper cuz he actually ate humans. o wo and my kitty's name is jasper so now every time someone mentions jasper HALE all i can think of is my fat furry orange giant cat.

PhoenixIllusion 05-15-2010 02:05 AM

I like Alice, and I wouldn't mind being forced into expensive clothing TOO much...

Everyone has special abilities! Esme has MOTHERLY LOVE and Charlie has UH OKAY I'LL JUST STAND OVER HERE and Bella's mum has FLIGHTYNESS OF FLIGHT.

Rising_Violet 05-15-2010 02:40 AM

xD I still don't understand why Bella left her insane mother to be in a town that she hates with a father that she's perpetually awkward around...

PhoenixIllusion 05-15-2010 03:38 AM

No idea... But Bella isn't exactly a thinker, now, is she?

Rising_Violet 05-15-2010 04:34 AM

8D Mary-Sue!

CeruleanBoxers 05-15-2010 05:19 AM

My dislike for this... disaster, is great.
-mini rant-
Bella is in an abusive relationship and is happy about it. Yeah, happy. In fact, she loves it so much, she convinces the little teen-aged girls who read Twilight that it's okay to have a bossy boyfriend who doesn't let you do anything so long as he's gorgeous. And okay, so what color are Edward's eyes anyway? Doesn't Stephanie Meyer describe them every chapter... as a new color? And the vegetarian thing... I still laugh at that.

I just can't take the books seriously at all. It makes me very sad that even my literate friends are obsessed with this series, but I must say, Twilight in Spanish is the funniest thing I've ever heard. xD

shinigamikarasu 05-15-2010 01:39 PM

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but one of my biggest problems was how they treated Leah. I think she had the most potential out of all the characters in terms of growth and possibly being a strong female character. But nooooo Meyer just HAD to make her out to be a bitter harpy that does nothing but cause trouble for the pack. Seriously, if my boyfriend left me for my cousin, I'd be more than a little pissed, too. And, of course, until she became a shape-shifter herself, she didn't even get a reasonable explanation as to why he suddenly left her (and I still find the whole imprinting thing ridiculous). Also, on top of thet, her father dies. You'd think that her family and pack-mates would be a little more sympathetic to her while she obviously has a lot going on, but instead they just complain about how annoying she is. It's not until the fourth book, when she leaves with Jacob and Seth that they try to be nice to her. NOW we have Sam trying to be nice and supportive to her. I think leaving was the best thing she could have done. Being connected to the her ex mentally was not helping her at all. Breaking away from that kind of situation was definitely the right choice for her.

Also, during the fight with Victoria's, I believe she was one of the first ones to get knocked out of commission. This really bothers me because she could have have been a strong member of the team. It was mentioned that she was one of the fastest, so why was Leah, the only female, knocked out early. Apparently, Meyer just hates strong women.

Another reason I really like her: She seems to be one of the only characters who really doesn't like the Cullens much, even at the end. Oh and something else I noticed; she was one of the only character that didn't get that happy ending a lot of the others did.

There's more I could say, but I can't stay long. I shall return.

Eventually.

PhoenixIllusion 05-15-2010 09:50 PM

I love you people.

I had totally forgotten Leah, but I still liked her.

But another thing- WHY IS EVERY WOMAN A BABY-LUSTING MORON? Leah's barren, the vampire ladies can't have any, and jesus christ why did Jacob have to be a pedophile?

Rising_Violet 05-16-2010 01:58 AM

Not only are the women baby-lusting morons for no apparent reason than.. that's the only thing women exist for...

But why is it that the women have absolutely no choice when it comes to the imprinting? Baby Nessy is going to end up marrying a guy that wanted her mother when she was a teenager!

Whisper Invictus 05-17-2010 06:26 PM

o-o never thought of it like that vio~~~ :XD

Mariann 05-18-2010 12:23 AM

I don't like:

- The writing. Seriously, what the hell? " 'Are you hungry?' 'No.' I didn't want to tell him my stomach was already full...full of butterflies." Not to mention every time Edward's mentioned, Smeyer describes his looks...in full detail...She has no idea how to write.

- The dialogue. "Friends don't let friends drive drunk. You are intoxicated by my presence." Has Smeyer ever heard a real person talk? Has she ever encountered romantic dialogue in her life? Then why can't she write any?

- The characters. Did Smeyer really have to make Bella a Mary-Sue? Probably - she has no idea what real people are like, apparently. Not to mention Bella's just a bitch. Seriously, she sees her father two weeks out of every year, moves in with him, finds out he has pictures of her, and decides they need to go? Could she be any MORE of a bitch? Not to mention she only wants to be with people to use them. I feel so sorry for anyone who associates with her - except Edward and Jacob, of course. Now, as for Edward - did Smeyer HAVE to make him a stalker? No, she didn't, because anyone with a bit of sense knows that's not romantic. I wouldn't be asking him to have sex with me if he watched me sleep - I'd be asking him to get the hell away, then I'd call the police. Finally, Jacob - HE'S A F-CKING PAEDOPHILE, FOR GOODNESS' SAKE! Seriously, falling in love with a baby? How sick do you have to be to think THAT'S romantic?

- The plot. Where is it? I don't see one. Well, okay, maybe a teeny tiny bit of one, but I think it ran off because it was afraid of the characters.

- The contradictions in it. According to Smeyer, vampires have no bodily fluids - so how the hell was Edward able to impregnate Bella? How was he even able to have sex? And, if I remember correctly, (correct me if I'm wrong) Smeyer said vampires are the way they are because of an extra chromosome; one, how would this chromosome form in all of a person's trillion+ cells? and two, an extra chromosome causes Downs syndrome, or Klienfelter's syndrome, not vampirism.

That's most of the reasons. It would take me hours to type out absolutely everything, so I've just put down broad categories. Basically, I hate the books.

Incidentally, has anyone read the parodies? I've read three. They're wonderful :)

PhoenixIllusion 05-18-2010 05:41 AM

Mariann.

Marry me. Please. PLEASE.

Mariann 05-18-2010 05:50 AM

*gasp* OH MY GOODNESS! YES!!! *runs around screaming happily*

Er...why, though? ^^;

PhoenixIllusion 05-18-2010 06:17 AM

Because you are mind blowingly awesome. Ssrsly.

Mariann 05-18-2010 05:56 PM

Aww, thank you XD This would be because of my post, eh? Or my signature?

Whisper Invictus 05-19-2010 03:23 AM

(I'd say both for Master) :)

But can you marry me for the rabbit? D: *noms on Mar*

Mariann 05-19-2010 03:32 AM

XD So...I'm supposed to marry two people now? I'm not complaining...:P

PhoenixIllusion 05-20-2010 05:48 PM

Hey! Mind slave! Off of the spouse!

And yes, it IS both. ^_^

But lets not get off topic!

So... I shall ask this-

Thoughts on Bella's mum?

Rising_Violet 05-20-2010 07:30 PM

She's crazy and flighty.. Actually I have very little idea on Bella's mom... I really only read the first two books and she didn't seem to pop up very much at all... Other than being an extremely anxious woman over e-mail.. Also she's extremely trusting of Edward...

Bella's Mom might be just another example in Meyer's books of weak-willed and weak-minded women that can't do anything for themselves...

PhoenixIllusion 05-20-2010 07:48 PM

That's what I thought! Glad someone shares that.

Also, she seems to just... Be there. Seriously, its... Kinda like she's that person who is oblivious to everything and the atmosphere. @[email protected]

Rising_Violet 05-20-2010 08:14 PM

Sometimes a character that's "Just There" can be useful to the story, because in the story of our lives there are plenty of people that are 'just there'. However a mother usually plays a bigger role, or has a more obvious influence. Here's Wikipedia's description of Bella's Mom. I think it will give plenty of insight to discuss.

Quote:

Renée Dwyer (née Higgenbotham; formerly Renée Swan) married Charlie Swan right after high school, but left with their baby, Bella, and divorced him soon after. Renée is an eccentric, silly person who will brave new things (like skydiving) and come to her senses later. Bella always felt that she was the mother of their relationship, having to guide Renée away from doing ridiculous things, and Renée considered Bella as her middle-aged child. After Renée remarries a much younger baseball player, Phil Dwyer, Bella unselfishly sends herself to live with her dad in Forks so that Renée and Phil can travel together. Edward describes Renée's mind as being insightful and almost childlike. In Breaking Dawn, Bella is scared to tell her mother about her engagement to Edward, but Renée believes Bella to be more mature than other teenagers her age and gives them her blessing. Bella says she and her mother look alike, but that Renée has shorter hair and laugh lines. In Twilight she lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Jacksonville, Florida, throughout the rest of the series. After Bella becomes a vampire she does not visit her mother, knowing Renée would never adapt to her change as Charlie did.

Mariann 05-20-2010 08:17 PM

Yeah...She's so useless. Granted I haven't met her much, but she doesn't seem to do much. Smeyer's woman are quite useless creatures; they exist for the men in their lives and seem to have no desire to have a life outside of them, it seems.

Rising_Violet 05-20-2010 08:38 PM

Smeyer definitely had the ability to create a book with strong feminine role-models, instead they seem to be weak willed, exist for their men, as Mariann mentioned... Either they make life hell when they could be strong, they are tied up with some horrid grudge or weakness... Or they're just plain useless and childish..

In wiki's description it's said that
Quote:

Renée is an eccentric, silly person who will brave new things (like skydiving) and come to her senses later.
Which seems to imply that sky-diving in a senseless thing to do, that trying new(if slightly dangerous) things is something to look down upon. If the woman enjoys skydiving, then let her have at it! An adventurous spirit isn't a bad thing, so long as she doesn't y'know.. forget her responsibilities and whatnot...

PhoenixIllusion 05-20-2010 11:19 PM

Oh no! We can't have that! Then women might have -shudder- FREE WILL or something! -horror-

Mariann 05-20-2010 11:25 PM

*gasp* Not free will! Not free will! Ooooh, won't somebody think of the children!!!
