It's to provide a bond between the processor and the sink right? Something like that. To bridge that little gap.

Yeah, and also allows for more heat transfer.

I asked my friend to touch the faces of CPU's I was testing..and they'd always come up cold because they didn't work, and she finally got one that was good and left her finger on it....

she got a nasty burn ^^;

The official term I was looking for was to increase the surface area between the processor and heat sink, but some pretty close things were mentioned, :O
