I'm watching this Derren Brown TV show, he's an entertainer who produces "psychic" and "magic" programmes, but always explains how it's all just a mixture of "suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship". (That's kinda his mantra)

He's gone to America (this is an old hour long special) and he's pretending to be a psychic in order to get endorsed by a "professional" psychic.

He says (I'm paraphrasing): "you're going watch this knowing that I'm just making it up. If that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's kind of my point."

This woman is crying, and you can see how uncomfortable he is, beneath the facade.
It sickens me that some people make a living from this.

Cardinal Biggles 02-03-2011 11:54 PM

That sounds fascinating, Pearl. Discomfort inducing possibly, but still fascinating.

I vaguely recall some shows here dissecting how magicians do tricks, but it's all very mechanical and full of bad puns and such.

Magic's cool. Pretending to talk to the dead relatives of the gullible is not.

Oh, Steevie...

Cardinal Biggles 02-06-2011 11:04 PM

Now, where was I? Oh yes, talking about trifling things

Hyena 02-06-2011 11:16 PM

Two days until I pop the question.

I'm nervous.

Cardinal Biggles 02-06-2011 11:23 PM

I can understand that. We've all got your back the best internet acquaintances can, though :D

Hyena 02-06-2011 11:29 PM

xDD

I don't really have any doubt that she'll say yes, but there's always that little bit of me that's like... "what if she says NOOOOO! DDD="

But I know that I can probably improve my chances if I propose while wearing a tophat and a monocle.

Cardinal Biggles 02-06-2011 11:32 PM

Oh my gosh. That would seal the deal for me. It could be a complete stranger, and I'd still say yes.

Hyena 02-06-2011 11:58 PM

Its really hard to turn down anything involving tophats. And the monocle is just the icing on the cake, really.

If there is cake too, I bet she will definitely say yes.

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:02 AM

Well, we're going to Red Lobster, so there may be cake. And lobster.

Its rather sad how very few fancy places there in Muncie. I have this ridiculous vision of what this proposal is going to look like because I want it to be fancy as all get out... but there's really nothing aside from chain restaurants. And I love her and all, but 45 minutes is a long drive for some cake...

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 12:04 AM

Hm. I suppose you could call ahead and ask them to class it up. Like, as much as they can.

I've pretty much always wanted a pet lobster. I think crustaceans are cute.

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:05 AM

I think they'd be like... "class? Its hard to get classier than Red Lobster!"

No way, man. Cephalopods all the way.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 12:19 AM

Whoa whoa whoa. No one said I was maligning cephalopods.

Love.

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:22 AM

It is SO CUTE.

Though, on the subject of crustaceans, I do love crabs. They're just so cute looking.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 12:35 AM

Isn't it though? I have many cephalopod related arts stored on my computer, but that's my favourite picture, by far.
And yeah, I just think there's something cute about crustaceans' little eyes...

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:38 AM

There's a drawing I did of what appears to be a very young and non-purple Ursual (Little Mermaid) that freaks my girlfriend out. xD

But then she goes and draws tentacles on stuff. I'm perplexed.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 12:41 AM

It won't let me see it because it is under the impression that I am a minor, but it sounds very nice indeed from the comments.
Is she not a fan of anthropomorphic things in general?

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:47 AM

If you REALLY want to see it. xD

One of her main characters is a catboy, so its not anthros that make her twinge. I have a theory that maybe she's afraid she's a little turned on by it. Who knows. She's a strange person. -shrug-

On the subject of superbowl (a la thread temporary title): the only sport I care for at all is hockey, and it just hasn't been the same since they stopped using the severed heads of settlers for the puck.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 12:49 AM

Very nicely done.

I was always more interested in arty sports. Figure skating, dressage, etc. Though I did play a bit of lacrosse in middle school.

Hyena 02-07-2011 12:54 AM

Synchronized Swimming! =DDD

I was in track when I was in middle school. And I was on the swim team for some of high school, but dropped that to pursue my love of painting. They didn't miss me much. I really only tried sports because my brother was sports oriented and I thought that I should at least give it a shot.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 01:03 AM

Oh, synchronized swimming is neato. I hope it still has a healthy following.

Hyena 02-07-2011 01:05 AM

Its been dying out, I think. But it'll come back. Synchronized swimming ALWAYS comes back.

Cardinal Biggles 02-07-2011 01:24 AM

Haha. We are in a time where things have to prove their mettle, I think. It's a rapidly changing landscape.
