Yah there was a lot of controversy when they tried to bring the event to Detroit as the company they were getting their cadavers from the republic of china and they were prisoners who rights were waived. The exhibit in GR was apparently all donations and they have paperwork to prove it. I didn't see such paperwork, and I would of found it interesting to see, but they were once again from the republic of china. I dunno.

I know that GR still had opposition to conservatives as there is a fetal development section, and I guess the whole sacredness of the body aspect of it. It really drives home how we are mortal...I'm sure if they did an exhibit on chickens they wouldn't find it as controversial. Perhaps PETA would, but that's probably it.

----------

And I like being offtopic.... :XP

Oh and that exploded man...is very big...and very different. The exhibits which were full body were stripped down to just the muscle and posed. It was interesting to see how the body looks when it's stripped down to that level. It was interesting to see body parts as they normally appear and what they look like if they are diseased or cancerous. They had the intestinal display which showed sections with diverticulitis, crones, and a normal one. Also the Lungs of a 'normal' human and then the lungs of a person who died of smoking....they put a clear box where people could drop their cigarettes and chewing tobacco and I meant to ask if that was all donated or if they filled the box with a few items on the bottom just to make it presentable...I do wonder how much they receive and how often they have to empty it.

I wonder the same about the cigarette drop-box. I'm sure that a display like that would be quite the eye-opener.

I updated my list with a lovely song from Voltaire and I decided to dedicate it to you alls because it's Valentine's Day and I loves you all!

I want the plague! I want to be part of an historical phenomenoooon
Actually, here's something I've thought of in the past, eh? If you are of European decent... You are a decedent of one of the lucky few who survived the plague. Isn't that some neat shit?

I'll have to tell people that! Makes me feel like a bit of a bad ass.
In European history last year, we had a long discussion about how it would be sweet to get the plague, since there's treatment now. We just thought it would be kind of awesome to be like, "Yeah, I had the black plague. Lived. I'm pretty much the greatest."

So my ancestors survived the plague, came over to the new world, killed my other ancestors and then mated with whoever was left. :insane:

That sounds all terribly dismal.
I don't think there is any mating on my side. I'm pure white bread.

I just got back from a totally bitchin' concert. My coworker asked if I wanted to see "classic Japanese music" with her a few days ago and I happily obliged. After painstakingly translating the info blurb into garbled English, I found out it was actually a fusion of modern/Western sounds with classic Japanese music. Which turns out to be AWESOME.

They used traditional instruments, such as taiko drums, Shamisen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaShamisen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and Japanese flute, alongside modern/Western instruments like the violin, piano, keyboard, electric bass guitar, cello, bongos, and various kinds of chimes/percussion. Some songs had a distinctly Japanese sound that was accented by the Western instruments while others were very Western sounds with a Japanese twist. The songs themselves ranged from classical to rock (such as "Smoke on the Water"). Heck, their first encore song was a take on Hawaii 5-O. XD

I can't describe it really, but I'm glad I bought two CDs and they all signed them. It was a little awkward since I was the only foreigner there so I stuck out like some blonde giant. I got the deer-in-headlights from some of them, but the shamisen guy was super nice... and cute. <3 He shook my hand and said in English,"See you again soon!"

----------

But unfortunately the CDs don't contain any song collaborations from the different artists. :( That's why I had to get both since they were separate. But the piano/violin duo were amazing in their own right and I wanted a CD from the Japanese orchestra too.

----------

Oh snap! Last edit I swear. XD After plugging the artist's name into Youtube, I just discovered that I've seen this video before:

And I just saw him live. :D And the CD includes a song using sounds from convenience stores, ha ha. I love this guy. <3

That sounds very neat indeed. I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself, Ferra.
Combinations of classical Japanese and western traditions can have fascinating results. A few years ago I went to a Noh adaption of Crazy Jane, the Yeats poem (and a sort of a folkloric character prior to that, as I recall.)

So music.
I'd buy this if it was an actual single.

I doubt the phrase "stammer time" would generally be considered PC. But in this context, it's bloody hilarious.

Ferra - Once again I'm so jealous of you! (Getting to go to a kickin concert and all...!) >_<; That youtube video was full of win, and even I got a chuckle out of him doing the sound effects. I'm sad he didn't finish the water music - I love the water music!!

He reminds me of this guy in a way:

And I have a weird question for you - as being an American, do you think you're stereotyped horribly there? I heard of the whole 'gaijin' phenomenon and I still remember going to smaller towns on our 2 week trip and people with just wide eyed stares like this group of kids was something they never seen before...

Since the city I'm living in has about 10,000 foreigners at any given time, I can't speak for those who live in a small town. However, I do get the stares and deer-in-headlights looks sometimes. But I'm kind of strange. I tend to walk around in complete tunnel-vision focused only on where I'm going or otherwise I get lost in thought. That being the case, I don't think I notice the stares as much. But I do feel self-conscious on days when I'm dressed up since I'm still figuring out what's appropriate to wear for going out on the town. As for stares from kids, I enjoy it actually. I'll wave or do something goofy. It's when they're old enough to know better that it starts to feel intrusive.

What I hear from others is that the attention seems nice at first, but after you settle in, you start to resent always standing out. I have trouble initiating contact with Japanese people if they don't talk to me first since I'm not sure how I'll be received, but very, very rarely have I ever encountered a negative reaction. Plus, I suspect that people are likely to act polite to your face even if they don't like you.

In terms of American stereotyping, ehhh... A lot of people assume gaijin are loud and rude and love to party, but I've been to enough parties here to know that it's quite true whenever you get a big group of us together. That's regardless of nationality, by the way. What I mostly had trouble with were the false assumptions, like Americans eat cheeseburgers everyday, etc. Plus people act amazed when you do "Japanese" things, like use chopsticks. Not to mention a lot of people are geared toward assuming Japan is some unique and amazing place. For example, there was a thunder and lightning storm one day and a teacher asked me "Does thunder exist in America?"

But I take things in stride and try to learn as much as I can without becoming a wannabe Japanese. So far it's been a useful approach to staying sane and broadening my horizons. :)
