If you grow up on other languages and rules for how their phonetic system works, each is easy to it's own. Besides, French is so very lovely to listen to, German is so, gruntish, and guttural.

I like German. And French.
I LOVE ALL MY HERITAGES OH YES! -SWING!- ... ... I can't feel my face. D= |
Do you want me to feel it for you?
|

German is only guttural if you're talking to someone from north Germany. lol. The southern accent is much less staccato. It's softer you know? And French just always sounds like you're... wilting. lol. It sounds like you're trying to talk with pudding in your mouth. I just never liked it. Although I know a lot of people, including certain very lovely ladies, who just love it.
Each to their own. lol. |
I happen to like French. Really, any language is all up to the way you present it. Liz speaks lovely French and it sounds like she's talking dirty to me. But that's usually because she is talking dirty to me. Conversational French, of course, has the same ups and downs as any other language... and the further south you go the more likely you are to find someone talking with their hands. I think of southern French as being percussive, like Italian and Greek.
|
Interesting. for some reason it turns out I speak with a southern accent when I speak German. I'm not sure why.
|
Because... that's how your mouth is shaped? Same reason everyone thinks I'm Canadian when I'm... from Indiana.
|
Actually it's all pronunciation with German. The word for I is ich. in the far north they pronounce it ick, in the south it's ish. In the middle it's kinda in the back of your throat. The flemmy bit you get in middle eastern languages. lol.
|
Yes, and I pronounce "code" with an umlaut. Pronunciation can be affected by the shape of your mouth.
|
has to do with how you hold your lips. You could pronounce it normally. You would just have to train yourself to.

I think any language sounds really nice when spoken well. Well-spoken German can be rather beautiful, but when you get someone who fails at it....yeah, it sounds bad. The same goes for French, Spanish, Japanese, even English. I think a lack of speaking English well is what's plaguing America at the moment.
I doubt I'd ever get the French prononciation right; I'd mangle it so badly! I can roll the r's in Spanish, as well as get that odd "n" sound fairly well, but I'm far from perfect, mainly because I did a tiny bit of studying it while I was being homeschooled. Sadly, it was all just memorizing crap and nothing else. My prononciation in German is much better. Then again, it's also the only language I've taken proper classes in! |
I agree with Taiyo. A lot of it comes down to the individual forming the words.
But, generalizing, I've always found Arabic quite versatile. It can be lilting, like a song, or harsh and cutting, like a sword. |
Any language can do that. You just have to know how to talk. The right words to use. for instance the best word ever is "ausgezeichnet" it means amazing, awesome, etc. But it can also be added to other words to make them kinda pop more. For instance "Sie sind ausgezeichnet Schone." Is somewhat like "You are incredibly beautiful." If you heard someone say it, you would understand what I'm talking about.
|
Yes, like I said, any language can do that, it's just down to the execution.
But the very intonations inherent in Arabic seem to have an edge on it. |
Do you speak German?
|
I love Arabic. There's just something mystical about it. >w<
|
@ Saro: Me? I don't but I have an ear for languages, and know it's capable of variation. You don't have to defend it.
@ Hyena: Yes, it's quite remarkable in both it's audible and visual forms. |
Sanscrit is interesting to hear as well. Always sounds like a song.
