Hai Folks
Everywhere on the internet I go I look for Wiccans, Pagans or witches because where I live there is such a small community and so I look to the internet to meet like minded people.
So, I was wondering if there were any Wiccans/Pagans or witches floating around here and if there are I would love to get to know you.
:vicky:

Don't worry, there are quite a few of them. Try going to the Menewsha Nations, I'm sure someone with a wiccan, pagan, or witch belief system as made a hangout in there ^.^

Not bad, thankfully it's started raining... but we should take this to either a hangout, pm, or profile comments as it's starting to get off topic. I'm from Saskatoon.

I wouldn't call myself a Wiccan or Pagans, per se... but I do base a majority of my philosophical views and beliefs from both religions. ^^ If that makes sense.

I'm still studying so I wouldn't call myself Wiccan yet, but I can't wait until I can proudly do so. It's such a beautiful and understanding religion.
And Albertan! Strangely I've never been east to Saskatchewan or Ontario. Or anywhere in eastern Canada. I only ever go west to BC.

Hi, Fae! If you're looking to hang out and chat with other like-minded people, would you like me to move this to hangouts forum for you? The General Discussion forum is more suited to discussions on given topics, whereas the hangouts forum is best for chatting. :)

I'm a pagan witch-in-training...well, I say training, but it's just me on my own reading everything I can get my hands on. :D I used to identify as Wiccan when I first started exploring, before I found out about the whole debate of whether or not you HAVE to be initiated to be a technical Wiccan. And I draw more from a variety of pagan beliefs instead of solely Wicca, so I corrected it.

Cherry, I'd love if you could move this for me to somewhere more appropriate
L O VAn, you can self initiate or be initiated into a coven by another Wiccan, but initiation should typically be done only after a couple years of studying and reading first

I was told by quite a few people that you have to find a coven and be initiated by a High Priest and/or Priestess when you complete your studies. Then again, almost just as many people informed me you can also do a self-dedication and practise as a Solitary. About.com's Paganism & Wicca guide wrote an excellent article about it here.

i'm currently a seeker of wicca trying to find a coven to train under. it'll be a while before i can even think about being initiated.
so right now i'm just a frustrated witch.
stormrose has it correct, you must be initiated to a properly lineaged wiccan coven (i.e. a coven that can trace it's lineage back to gerald gardner) by a high priest/priestess to be wiccan, you can not self-initiate. wiccans can do solitary practice, but what they do outside of their covens can no longer be called wicca, it's just witchcraft. it's a very very strict mystery religion based entirely on right practice.

Matcha, I have to say that I do not agree.
I think Wicca is actually one of the most open religions. I mean, if you want to be a traditional Garderian or Alexandrian Wiccan than initiation by a High Priestess or Priest is important but I have been a solitary since I started practicing and proudly call myself a Wiccan.
I feel that, and I'm not alone in this many of the most influential Wiccan authors believe in solitary practice, if you follow the 13 Goals and the Rede and love the Great Ones every day you can call yourself a Wiccan. If Wicca could not be practiced alone than why do some famous Wiccan authours such as Cunningham and Buckland have guides for Solitary practitioners?
If you live by the initiation only theory than what happens to people, like myself, who live in areas where there are absolutely no covens at all? Can they never call themselves a Wiccan, not because they don't love the Great Ones, but because of their geography?
Wicca is not a path to travel on lightly and I don't think one should be initiated, or self-initiated, before they spend much time learning the Craft and developing their love for the Great Ones that being said I feel that anyone can be Wiccan and so a coven is not necessary to call yourself a Wiccan.
This all being said, there are many traditionalists in the world who would feel that I am not a true Wiccan. To each their own
----------
There are many wonderful books written for solitary practices.
Scott Cunningham, Raymond Buckland, Thea Sabin all have books that I would highly recommend to anyone just beginning on the path.

fae, since i don't really want to start on that particular train of argument and battle i'm just going to say we should agree to disagree. i'm not saying what you do is any less of a religion or any less valid, just that by the definition of what wicca is, it isn't wicca.
if you would like to politely discuss different belief on the matter though, i'd be more than happy to!
from everything i've learned, and everything that i believe to be true, wicca is a fertility based mystery witchcraft religion. you cannot know the names of the lord and lady without being in the inner circle, which requires proper initiation. there are a great many wiccans who have had to move and travel a long way to find covens that work for them, being dedicated enough to do so is very important. wicca is not based on belief, it's not an orthodoxic (right belief) religion, it's orthopraxic (right practice). you must everything the right way for it to be considered wicca. it's impossible to solitary initiate unless you are a very very flexible hermaphrodite who has had a direct communication with two specific deities of wicca, the lord and lady of the british isles. there is no eclectic wicca, all true wicca is traditional.
also, cunningham and buckland have been debunked and their books are not about wicca. they are about a completely valid practice of witchcraft, but it isn't wicca.
i do agree that the path to wicca is a very difficult one that should never be taken lightly. proper personhood is not an easy thing to attain and many people are not right for the religion. i could, though my seeking, discover that i am one of them and have to start my path on a different course but for now this is the course i am most willing to take.
personally, i do not believe you are a true wiccan because based on what wicca is i can't. do i think you're any less of a person for believing what you do is wicca? no, i just believe you've been misinformed. however, like you said, to each their own.
i do not want to be one of those traditionalists that jump on everyone who ever says they're wiccan without a proper vouch screaming "GTFO FLUFFEH BUNNEH! YOU SO IGNANT!", so i hope you do not think less of me for thinking the way i do as i don't think any less of you for think a different way

Very interesting argument Matcha, agree to disagree we shall.
Brightest Blessings
To get the discussion going on a more uplifting tone I have a question for everyone. When did you discover the path and what happened to make you want to follow it?
For me, I have always had a solid belief in fate and destiny, energy and magic as well as the occult. I discovered the path first when I was about 14 but didn't make a true commitment to the Great Ones until about three years ago when I was mature enough to make the decision properly with all appropriate information. It just fit, it made the most sense. The idea of a singly higher power that watches us and punishes us for bad behavior just didn't seem right to me.

I still have my teen spell book and such from when I thought I was pagan at 13/14 and then it seemed to fizzle out.
Now at 18 I'm thinking of doing some proper research into paganism because there is still a lot that I agree about it compared to any other religions. I also think it might be useful to me at some point because I'm going to be doing a Biochemistry degree in October and plan to go into medical research.
Obviously a lot of things around paganism are based on properties of herbs minerals ect ect and I want to see if any of the old ideas can be applied to modern day.

Xensas,
Medical research is a very admirable field, you can do a lot of good for the world with that.
In terms of herbs and minerals connection to every day, especially with medicine I would imagine.
I was a bit of a fluffy bunny at 14 too, so I feel ya.
Really nice to meet you

to be honest, i'm not sure when i found myself on the path i'm on. i went through that fluffy bunny stage in middle school, then abandoned most religious thinking in general.
it may have started when i was given my first deck of tarot cards by a pretty little witch in a "new age" shop that i was looking for incense in. she was such a nice lady, she genuinely wanted to get to know me and at the time, as a lost, lonely, and mostly miserable person, that meant the world. i still don't know why she gave me those cards, but i don't like to question it. it's still my favorite deck, beyond even the one i made myself. i went back to that shop a lot, just to hang out. she taught me how to properly meditate and in return i taught her how to draw caricatures.
we didn't talk much about religion, but thinking back i do believe she was the reason i started looking into it again.
being who i am, i require structure, a way to definitely know where stand, a set pattern to follow, and lot of guidance. wicca called me the strongest and seems to fit me the best, so here i am: a seeker. i'm not sure how long it will be before i can complete my journey but i'm enjoying path where it takes me.

Matcha,
that's a really beautiful story, to have someone who acts as guide, mentor and puts you on your path for life. I hope to meet someone like that in the future.
It must have been a real comfort to begin your journey with someone's help

i think of her more as a catalyst than a mentor, she sparked the interest and i found my way. in some of my more thoughtful moments i wonder if it was fate, but all i know is i'm glad for her. she wasn't only the reason i found my way to my path, she was also my friend. i have so few of those that each one is a treasure :)
i do hope you meet someone like her, everyone should have such a positive person in their lives
