Algas Soleado 08-20-2011 03:01 AM

Haha, the first time I was pinged, I thought I was a big deal. Then I was like... "oh. It's a program." lol

Cherry Who? 08-20-2011 03:21 AM

The first ping I ever got fooled me too. I replied to it...

In the event thread we had been discussing cute lunchboxes and such... well, I found one yesterday!
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lq...q4nko1_500.jpg
Sort of an ice bucket, I guess. But it's well insulated, so it's pretty much the same thing. It's so cool and it was only $2!

hummy - Actually, my name is taken from a Nirvana song (around 2:19 if you don't want to listen to the whole thing). But I do feel a bit ironic when I have a stomach ache... Biting my arm doesn't help.

Algas Soleado 08-20-2011 05:48 AM

Haha, I just thought you liked the flavor and had acid reflex a lot? Mine is grammatically incorrect Spanish but it sounds awesome this way and I like it. ^-^ Also, yay! lunch box! and yay!!! Nirvana!!!

Cherry Who? 08-20-2011 06:06 AM

Mine's incorrect too. It should be "Cherry-Flavored," with a dash.

FireOnix 08-20-2011 06:20 AM

yay a permanent thread I was kind of hopping one would be made

hummy 08-20-2011 12:20 PM

Cherry ~~ lol @ biting your own arm not helping.

Algas ~~ woohoo page number two~!!!!!

FireOnix 08-20-2011 05:43 PM

It might be possible that some of the people who joined this topic in the event thread may not come back? I heard from several people that they only come out when there's an event going on

Algas Soleado 08-20-2011 05:54 PM

Yes, I have heard of these Cash Hermits. lol not really, I just wanted to sound spooky. It failed I'm sure, lost in translation of internets. :D Har har harr

hummy 08-20-2011 06:01 PM

lol, silly Algas.
i gotcha, cash hermits ;p
we'll keep it going until the next event.

FireOnix 08-20-2011 08:01 PM

FireOnix 08-21-2011 12:51 AM

Ive been munching on tomatos, peppers, corn and lettuce from my garden all month. :( it's so sad that the growing season is creeping to an end

Cherry Who? 08-21-2011 01:41 AM

Oh, that sounds delicious. We've been hitting the farmer's market a bunch this year, the homegrown veggies are so much better. Occasionally cheaper that the grocery store, too! But sometimes more expensive. I think the best I've had so far are homegrown potatoes and homegrown asparagus. Luckily for us, some potatoes grew in our compost pile from potato scraps that were thrown in there! Now if only some asparagus would sprout up.

I'd love to grow some of my own veggies soon. Especially asparagus... Can you tell I like asparagus?

FireOnix 08-21-2011 02:38 AM

I grew potatoes once but they didn't do well. the sandy soil I was working with kind of made them like salt potatoes and they only got about as big as golf ball...which wouldn't have been that bad but that's not what I planted. I've never grown asparagus but I hear it takes a lot of work. you can't just plant them and wait for them to sprout and then you have to watch them once they start to mature because the longer they get I hear they start gaining a wood like flavor. and then if you want white asparagus you have to keep them covered with something like black trash bags.

Also...I'm not sure how much you already know. so disregard anything you already know. You have to be careful when you buy from farmers markets. I grow strawberries and a small farmers market that sets up around here started selling strawberries a whole 2 months before mine had started flowering. which means that work out of a green house and encase you don't know greenhouse grown anything doesn't tend to have the same flavor...if they have flavor at all.

hummy 08-21-2011 03:10 AM

Cherry ~~ what does it taste like?
i've never had it and feel really left out at the moment.
woot, gotta love tea too!

FireOnix ~~ i love homegrown tomatoes.
i've had tomatoe sammies all week.
it is sad when growing season is over.
i do not like how blah they taste durning winter months ;[

Algas Soleado 08-21-2011 04:47 AM

My family has you guys beat! :) my dad grows corn, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, sweet peppers, jalepenos, squash, and dew berries! :D then my mom grows all the flowers and berbs: basil, lavender, rosemary, oregano, dill, mint, sage, lemonbalm, and chives. Then our neighbors grow all sorts of fruit trees. They bring stuff over if they can't eat all of it. :)
I'm so blessed. ^-^

Cherry Who? 08-21-2011 04:56 AM

What does asparagus taste like? Hmm... That's hard to describe. It has a strong smell that can be a bit stinky, but it's not like what it tastes like. It has a nice... vegetable-y taste. I'm not really sure how to describe it. But if you want to try some, it's super easy to prepare. Wash a few stalks, cut them into bite sized pieces (get rid of the very bottom of the stalks, it's all dried out), put them in a bowl with a some margarine, parmesan, and greek seasoning (if you don't own greek seasoning, I recommend getting some. Best spice mix ever), cover the bowl in saran wrap and microwave for 2 minutes. Just like that you've got a really delicious and super low-cal lunch. :D

Just stay in the room while it's microwaving... if you leave and then come in the room it will smell awful, but if you're there the whole time it doesn't smell bad. And be real careful removing the saran wrap. Lots of steam builds up in there and it'll bubble up, so once that's released it can burn you. I usually use the knife I used to cut the asparagus to pop the "bubble" and then use it to help cut the saran wrap off. You'll want oven mitts.

It makes your pee reek, though... Sulfur.

hummy 08-21-2011 05:13 PM

Cherry ~~ maybe i'll buy a stalk or two and give it a try.
the 'stinkie' smell isn't too appealing to me to be honest.
but i'm all for trying new things.
anyone know if any kind of buffet has them on the menu?
thanks Cherry!

FireOnix 08-21-2011 09:16 PM

@Algas o.O as long as this is a competition... I think the point is to either grow it yourself or get it from local growers

:P and my stepdad grows sweet corn, a rainbow or peppers, squash, pumpkin, tomatoes, radishes, turnips, carrots, a couple different lettuces, broccoli, cauliflower, sunflowers, brussel sprouts, onions, and he has an apple tree...I think thats it

I grow strawberries, blueberries, peas, herbs: mint, chocolate mint, basil, oregano, thyme and lavender.

and I got my mom a miniature peach tree for mothers day a couple of years ago. theyre soooo sweet

Algas Soleado 08-21-2011 09:44 PM

:P I'd say my grandma has her own cows and chickens (only a few that she sells) but I'd be forgetting what thread this was so I won't.

...whoops. ^-^

hummy 08-21-2011 10:24 PM

FireOnix ~~ oh, chocolate mint?
i've never heard of that.
i'd love to try it though.

FireOnix 08-21-2011 10:37 PM

@Algas when my grandpa was alive he had a, I think, 5 acres filled with just about every veggy you can think of along with about 30 or more each of chickens and turkeys.

@hummy you should try it I use it a lot in cherry pies and have taken the time to infuse oil, which is good for baking, and boiled it in sugar syrup, which is good for putting it on top of ice cream and cake
