My Chinese handwriting is child-like when I try to write neatly. When I try to write fast it looks really weird...doesn't help that I often make mistakes or use incorrect characters with a similar pronunciation when leaving notes for my parents. If I'm desperate I have resorted to writing the pinyin or English for characters I can't remember how to write.

What is also interesting with Chinese is the stroke order, my mum pays me out for writing characters I know with the incorrect stroke order...[sweat] and she finds it amusing when people ask how to write China in Chinese 中国 and the people who have no idea about the stroke order draw the horizontal stroke in the middle first and then a 'square' for the first character.

Very much so. But she thinks it's funny because people who don't know Chinese tend to write it in that same way.

Does she write it first?

Yes, and she would write it correctly. I'm guessing they either didn't pay attention to the stroke order or like many, are not aware of it...and when they see that character they probably think it looks simple enough to write.

But I think if it were me looking at a written Chinese character, provided the proportions/angles and lengths of the strokes were 'proper' I most probably wouldn't be able to tell whether it was written in the correct stroke order or not.

I might do it better >.>'' I doubt it. xD

There are websites out there for learning that type of thing...I sometimes use nciku - Online English Chinese Dictionary, Learn Chinese Mandarin Online, it's an interesting site for Chinese-English and English-Chinese

I usually know the stroke order for any character since there's this 'rule' about strokes that I learned as a kid...but it's kind of hard to describe. [sweat]

yeah mine are mostly to do with art. So I think it will be enjoyable.
