Basically the best way to first learn is trying to pixel And shade/highlight 3D shapes. That's how i learned. I had a mentor for a while until they redid the pixel community site I was a part of. But I am still friends with some pixel artists. Not on any avatar site. But still. The best thing you can do is just try. Even if you think you wont be good at it. :)
Sounds like something that'd be fun, bit I'm sure I'd not be so good at it. But, I'm always up for a challenge and a new art medium!

That's why people practice.
without practice you wont be good and no one is automatically amazing at it.
But it never hurts to try and practice. I am just starting to get back into it after dropping it 2 years ago.

But when i look at my old stuff i am so happy to see improvement.
Plus you can always remake something old when you get better.

Psssh. No. But when I'm not good at something...I bury that something in the backyard with a shovel and I salt the top of the earth so it never emerges again to haunt me.

I'm always game for pizza....but perhaps with a nice/different topping. Like thai chicken pizza or fig and prosciutto pizza!
