We call it 'Aruvakatthi' (katthi-knife) Sundan is a name of a fish here [XD] I always laugh at that word because there's a teacher whom we call (behind her back [ninja]) 'Nettholi' (Anchovy?) because she kinda looks like that xD, and we call her sister 'karuvadu' (sardine) and their dad as Sundan [ninja] Fish family! [rofl]

Sestina 06-11-2014 09:45 PM

Hahaha! [lol]

What do you call your language, Lexa? I'm curious now and would like to learn. The words you've mentioned from your language so far sounds/reads really beautiful, even if they're just names of fish or a knife. xD

Lexadis 06-11-2014 09:50 PM

It's Tamil [=3]

Sestina 06-11-2014 09:55 PM

Ah, yes. I remember that you mentioned that before.
Is Tamil Sri Lanka's national language?

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:02 PM

Nope. Sinhala is the native and the national language. Tamil is second, and English is third c:

On a side note, 'Sinhala' people are first said to be originated from 'Singa' which means lion. It is believed that a king's wild daughter who was banished from the palace got married to/was raped by a lion, and she bore twins, a boy and a girl. Those 2 children married, and gave birth to many sons, out of which, an arrogant prince called Prince Vijaya was banished from the kingdom. He was sent off on a boat/ship with 700 people, and they landed in Sri Lanka, and he got married to a 'devil' princess, after which started the written history of Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese~
And also, I don't believe any of it, except for the part that those guys came from India. Well, who would? o_0

Sestina 06-11-2014 10:12 PM

Interesting. I like knowing those type of stories/mythologies.
If singa is lion, does 'pore' mean land? So like Singapore would mean lion land or the land of lions. xD

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:20 PM

Yes! All our histories are clogged with Sanskrit and Pali.

In Sanskrit, an old Indian language, "Singapura", from which Singapore got its name, means "Lion City".

And, if I ever speak to you, be prepared [insane]:

Sestina 06-11-2014 10:28 PM

I almost got Singapore right [insane]

omghahaha! "Maaaaa! D; (Mother please!)" "This is my son's... ah... special friend." [rofl] hahaha!

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:30 PM

Yes! Amma means Mum in Sinhala/Tamil, so we end up saying Maaa [XD]

Take care [heart]

Elirona 06-11-2014 10:37 PM

You guys have pretty languages. <:3c English is boring.

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:39 PM

What do you say that saying? In search of greener pastures? I know it in Tamil but I can't recall the English one >_>
My chemistry sir is very very bad at English and he pronounces Glucose as 'Kulu-cose' [XD]

I was born into Japanese and Swedish at the same time. Crazy mix, isn't it? English sounds.... Interesting [XD] Interesting enough that I have learned it~

Elirona 06-11-2014 10:48 PM

English is a really hard language to learn! :P

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:49 PM

I'm bad at English D: I can write essays fine, I can type fine, but I can't speak fine [shock] And I study in English too >_> That being said, I'm not good at any of the 3 languages I know most. Bleh.

---------- Post added 06-12-2014 at 04:21 AM ----------

English is enough to catch up if not for the speed in which you guys talk all mumbly and jumbly! [XD]

Elirona 06-11-2014 10:51 PM

Eh, what can you do, Lexa. :P You know more languages than I do.

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:53 PM

What languages do you know? [eager]

Elirona 06-11-2014 10:53 PM

Just English! :P

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:56 PM

Oh [XD] I don't know, English is pretty. I have to say, Sinhala sounds like someone slapping you in the face. At least it sounds like that to me >_>

McNugget 06-11-2014 10:58 PM

Usually if it's any language I'd associate with the equivalent of a slap to the face - it's Irish spoken English. <_>

Lexadis 06-11-2014 10:59 PM

Irish spoken English?

Elirona 06-11-2014 11:02 PM

I did know Italian, but lost it a few days after I left high school. :P

Lexadis 06-11-2014 11:07 PM

[lol]
I slept while viewing the uder control panel, and unsubscribed 2 threads. I don't even know what were the 2 threads D:

You know how Irish speak a different dialect of English compared to standard English? That's what I mean [XD]
I have a friend named David that is Irish and whenever we video chat and he speaks it literally sounds like he's angry all the time.

Lexadis 06-11-2014 11:10 PM

I don't know! Oh [lol] Then what he would sound like when he really is angry?

Elirona 06-11-2014 11:11 PM

Well I think it's all the potatoes he eats. [ninja]
