There are LOADS of versions of The Little Mermaid. One of the ones Flink remembers most, the mermaid had her tongue cut out, which was why she couldn't talk.

And the fact that the mermaid required that she have one day, or was it night, to herself each week or so and no one was to disturb her, and he husband did walk in one night. Flink can't remember what happened after that, of course.

I thought in the real little mermaid he did marry someone else and ariel was so distraught over it that she killed herself :P
there are so many versions its insane!

and in the real sleeping beauty he kissed her and she didnt wake up... so he just started *cough* making babies? yes. thats a pleasant way to put it. XD and so while sleeping she would just pop out his children and they lived happily ever after. or, at least the prince did. haha.

those are the only two i remember though.
but i agree with you on the princess and the pea. and i dont see how sleeping with a pea under 20 mattresses and feeling it says that youre a virgin :P

I suppose it's just the whole idea of tender untouched flesh that makes it sound "sacred and fragile" or whatnot. Who knows. :B

Hee hee...for some reason, they didn't mention anywhere in the story they read that the prince wanted to make sure the princess had never done the deed with someone else.

Might have been the fact that it was toddler storytime. ;P

I had read a series of novels back when I was in high school or early college where they took a fairytale and really made it dark. I know most of the fairytales weren't sweet and happy like they are now. But these books were really good, fun to read.

I LOVE reading more mature versions of Fairy tails.
I'm currently reading "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" (I'm sure you can all huess the fairytail? XD ). The books "Daughter of the forest" and the two others that follow it are also good. Indepth, mature, dark, yet so very REAL feeling. A great take on an ole' fairy tale (A girls 7 brothers turn into swans).

It was good reading Fairy tales as a kids, and it's nice to know theres a small backing of novels out there that you can read and take with you as you grow. >XD
And then also one can read the 'originals' as well.

Though I agree, Ailena, that picking apart the children version of fairy tales is quite funny!

Wow! I'd never heard of that version of sleeping beauty! LOL!

I do remember my Hans Christian Anderson Little Mermaid book when I was little though. It was depressing.

A very opinionated and feminist girl I know gave me a "politically correct" version of Princess and the Pea where a "real woman" wasn't all helpless and delicate.

But speaking of hospitality and sleeping in other people's homes, I always bring my own Tempurpedic pillow because my neck is bad since my bad head-on collision and I get headaches.

I do often note though how horrible nursery rhymes are if you listen to the words! Like Rock-a-Bye Baby? Or Humpty-Dumpty?

LOL! My sister commented on Rock-a-bye Baby just recently. She started singing it to her daughter and then stopped when she realized what the words actually were!

Chunsa - I didn't really get into Confessions - read it about a year or so ago. I figured out what those books I read were - the Tor or Windling Fairy Tale series: http://www.endicott-studio.com/snowWhite.html

But speaking of the nursery rhyme stuff, have you guys heard of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime books? I'm dying to read them! I loved his Thursday Next books and just discovered the Nursery Crime ones a week or so ago while at Barnes and Noble. Jack Spratt and Mary Mary are the ones who investigate said crimes. ;) Looks totally entertaining!

HAHAHA! I just had this vision of rocking in a chair with a baby going, "When the bow breaks, the... o_o"

But yeah... a lot of nursery rhymes are pretty gruesome too.

This isn't exactly on topic, but did you guys ever watch Looney Tunes when you were young? The originals? I really do think they were meant for adults. x.x

I did sometimes. But even shows like Animaniacs, which I watched all the time, had some more adult humor in it. Nothing bad or raunchy, of course. Just jokes that little kids wouldn't get.

Come to think of it, even the "real action" Scooby-Doo movies had hints. Like Shaggy falling for a girl named "Mary Jane", in which he got all oogly-eyed and cooed, "Like, I looooove that name!"

xD

All of what we now know as "fairy tales" were originally written for adults, but evntually, especially thanks to one Mr. Walt Disney, they are now watered down and geared towards children. Go out and get a book of the "original" stories, which are easy to find in your library or bookstore. It's absolutely amazing the adult nature of so many of these stories.

Maybe I'll grab one the next time we're at a decent bookstore. I am indeed curious. I only know little things I've read here or there. I have read some of the originals and thought, "Whoa!", but in a good way.

I totally can't get into the old cartoons like Tom and Jerry anymore, now that they PACK every second of cartoon/movies/animation full of humor that you have to watch it so many times just to get all the jokes! (Like in Robots, with the voice of Ewan McGregor, one of the robots is buffing his green metal "lawn" instead of mowing it, and the symbols for the male and female bathrooms are of a Plug and an Outlet!)

I do remember when Animaniacs first came out though, and I LOVED it because it was the first I remember having jokes only older people would get. Now all kid movies are like that because they realize that marketing to adults is just as important. But have you ever tried to go back and watch 101 Dalmations? It's SO SLOW! Especially how long it takes the dogs to sneak out when the 2 bad guys are watching a game show. Yikes!

I saw them at the library when I was working there - I really wanted to check some of them out to read but I couldn't at the time because I had so much school work to do.

I saw one that was about the 3 bears :) Once I finish the book I'm reading right now I'll probably head out to the library and try them again.

regarding fairy tales being watered down...i remember when I first read Cinderella (not the Disney version) where the step sisters cut off parts of their toes!!! ewwwww!!!

and I still have to find where I saw the stuffs again. I'm so scatterbrained lately.

I have a friend who is a children's lit prof at a local university as well...I should ask her about her take on stuff like this. She's incredibly brilliant and fun to talk to ^_^

I had a Brothers Grimm story book when I was younger. i think nearly all those stories are a bit dark, if not downright gruesome.

I'd like it if someone did some up to date 'fairy tales' Modern, realistic remakes of the stuff that Disney created classics of. I think a more urban version of a lot of those tales would end up turning out very differently! The girls wouldn't be so wet for a start..

Yup... The Brothers Grimm, I once had a collection of theirs.

One story was callen "AshenPuttel" which translates, roughly to "CinderElla" and in that one, the step sisters both cut off bits of their foot to fit the shoe. One chops the big toe, the other her heel.

I believe "fairy tales" were more gruesome because, once upon a time, life was more gruesome... having to hunt and or kill your own dinner, possibly defend your property with bodily harm, deadly illness a common, unexplained thing and many other "not so nice" bits. Gruesome would be the everyday. It would be one way to teach kids a lesson or moral, maybe not always in the nicest way, but in a way that it would be remembered.

And "The Princess and the Pea", they were trying to prove that she was of royal blood, having the most tender of skin, she would feel the tiniest of imperfection in her sleeping arrangement, where a common blood person would not even notice, princess' being ever so delicate. But I agree with the bit about it being rude to complain, being the guest of more royalty.

I, myself, prefer "Once Upon a Mattress" with Carol Burnett and Tracey Ullman.

Hi hi Purkles - things sure have been quiet around here lately -

I just thought I would pop in and say hello.

I went to my 2nd session for my tattoo last night - sat for about 2 1/2 hours and got 1/2 of my back done - man o man was it painful - I was sobbing towards the end :? - but it looks incredible so far.

Once I get a picture of it I'll post one here for you all - I know Chris took some last night when we got home - but I think it may of been a little bloody so I may wait until it's a little less . . . raw looking - we'll see. :)

Went to the farmers market this morning to get peaches - I planned on making a peach cobbler - but thy didn't have any :( I bought apples instead and am going to make an apple crisp - but I was so looking forward to a peach cobbler.

Anyway - I'm going to put some more A&D ointment on and then head out to Costco - we need some bulk juice and tp

Morning purkles! Just a flyby post really. Sia's right...it has been awfully quiet in here recently.

I'm going to be spending most of my day today working on files so that people can convert over to the online product. I've been putting it off so I figure I might as well get a little OT and get it done.

I can't wait to see your tattoo with some color Sia. I bet it looks awesome!

I remember studying fairy tales in our satire class in high school. I probably still have the book somewhere (probably in the way back and bottom of the storage room). Very interesting stuff.

I can see a modern Cinderella telling the fighting step sisters, "You can have him. He ain't worth my time."

A modern day Cinders would involve the ugly sisters either suing for being called ugly, or having a shedload of plastic surgery too

How long before you get the other half coloured then Si? When you can face it?? I could just eat peach cobbler now! My Mum made one with plums once, it was delicious! Hmm, seeing as I'm focussing on food again I'd say it time to hit the kitchen

That's ok Chi! *huggles* We've all been so busy lately. Things seemed to have calmed down a little which is good but still a lot left to be done.

Oh yea, the ugly step sisters definitely would have plastic surgery and fake boobs. They could go through rehab too, lmao!

LOL! Modern takes on fairy tales are awesome! I admit, I like movies that do that to classic tales too, even if they do seem to butcher them sometimes. Things like Clueless, Ten Things I Hate About You, and others like that have always been fun for me to watch.

My next appointment is in 3 weeks - originally we were going to do another 2 weeks but I'm going to be in Washington DC working at the Greenfestival and this way I'll definitely be healed before I have the pain in the other side to deal with.
