I love medical and scientific type stuff. I love horror as well. I stay away from romance. While there are some I like, I don't generally like what a lot of people referred to as "chick flicks". I like drama, horror, and comedy. I love to read. Just like my movie watching, I can read the same book more than once if I really liked it. There are several of Ann Rice's books that I do just that with when I run out of things to read.

I like romance novels, but not so much on tv. I get tmi from that. I prefer uber action movies like 2012! I don't like too much comedy anything. isn't all that funny to me usually. a few romance comedies are alright.

Mmm... Stephen King is just a weirdo from Bangor maine. I used to live down the road from him and his house really creeped me out. He had a lot of gargoyles peeking over his fence and stuff. I've only read one of his books actually. Dreamcatcher. It was pretty good. Some parts were a little weird and got hard to follow but over all it was good. THe movie though, I thought it was terrible and didn't follow the story much at all. Except for the basic idea, other than that they did whatever they wanted it seems like. Same with Jurassic Park when I actually read it I was amazed at how different the movie was from the book. I loved reading timeline though! It explained quantum physics and I totally understood it. I have to read it again. I'll make sure to take it with me when I deploy. I want to feel smart :P Ann Rice also has a lot of good novels. She really paved the way for a lot of ideas and how we look at vampires. Very good writers.... I also have a weak spot for Harry Potter, I just haven't read the last book because I have this thing about things coming to an end. I avoid endings... so I can never finish my stories either :(

Just looking at Stephen King, he looks like a weirdo, but then, to write like he does I guess you'd kind of have to be. Think about it-he turned a story about a simple rabid dog (dog with rabies) into a horror/scary story. I don't like his newer work near as well as his older work, which does seem to be different somehow. I didn't know it but then found out that he was in a car accident where he almost died, and it seems that after that is when his writing seemed to change. Dreamcatcher is one of those. I mean, I could follow along with everything except for the fact that the creatures/aliens come out through the ass. That's a bit much even for me. The person who told me about his accident made a suggestion that I personally feel is plausible. His wife is a writer as well-he may not be able to write like that anymore and she could be helping him along, and if that's so, it's not going to be near as good.
Movies most times don't follow the written book, and most times aren't as good as the book. In some cases the movie totally screws it all up, as in the case of Queen of the Damned. I think they completely screwed that one up (and that's putting it nicely). My biggest sore point is them having Marius as Lestat's maker, which he wasn't. On it's own, I might could have dealt with it, but having read the book, it pisses me off. Though I admit, it's still one I'll watch more than once. And I agree, I really like Anne Rice's portrayal of vampires. There are a few exceptions, where the movie either follows the book closely or is just as good in it's own way. I loved the DaVinci Code in both forms! I can't wait to see Angels and Demons-I loved the book. Oh, and I love Harry Potter myself!

I never finished reading the Harry Potter books. Its low on my list right now. Okay, I know the name Anne Rice, but I can't remember anything she wrote. enlighten me people.
and what the crap! aliens coming out of the ass?! I'll remember not to read that book. If I want to read Stephen King, I'll read an older story then.
A movie that is very similar to the book is the Bourne series. It took me half way through the first book to find any difference and it was a big one, but one that made a lot of sense to change or at least shorten. oh and the Princess Bride is very very similar; almost exact. Wait, I think my suite mate still has my copy. I'm going to go bug her about that.

I'm too tired to write but Id like to give my opinion on all of that and especially my take on Stephen King. He bought the van that almost killed him. I've seen him since his accident but being in a near death experience can change you a lot. Could change how he looks at things and thinks of things. Something that was simple like crossing the street now gives him PTSD. Maybe, not saying it does...
I don't care for the HP movies. I think they are crappy and too rushed. Especially I think the.. 3rd one? Where he is supposed to learn about an Animagus and he has the Stag but they don't say anything about his father being a Stag and I think that's important. Meh... At least the acting has improved over the years. I think the 3rd one was the last one I really watched anyway.
Yes... aliens coming out your butt. They were supposed to be friendly and live in your intestine like a small parasite and help you communicate better, like have a little bit of psychic powers. But it didn't work out that way. They were agressive and wanted to take over the world. What did that guy call them? Ass monsters? Or something like that. Him and his darn tooth picks. I think that if I were holding an evil alien in the toilet and if I moved it would come out and eat me, I could go a few minutes without a toothpick  But that's just me... ok now.. off to bed :P

near death definitely changes a person! (OMG the first time I spelled definitely right without using spell check! I'm learning!!)
yeah, some of the movies weren't too good, but I like the last one. Granted, I didn't read that book.

Ditto on yes, aliens out the ass. I can't really give you a year or anything on where to draw that line, but yes, his older works are much better. And yes, Zephi, your idea on the change in his writing makes perfect sense as well. See me, I only found out about his accident about a year and a half ago, but I
DID notice the change in writing. Well, I just knew it didn't seem near as good anymore. The newer one about the paintings wasn't too bad though. And yeah, toothpick guy was a bit much at that moment. I wasn't thinking about waiting on the toothpick because the monster might get out-I was pretty sure he could do it fast enough. What I kept thinking was he was going to pick the toothpick up off the floor- the nasty, bloody floor. I don't care that it seemed to be laying in a clear spot, you know what I mean?
Anne Rice-Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned, The Vampire Lestat, etc. (and those are, in fact, my favorites!) Interview with a Vampire movie actually followed very closely to the book. There were a few changes, but it didn't really change the outcomes. For instance, it wasn't Louis' wife and child that died, it was his brother, who was a very devout spiritual man, and it happened just after they argued-he turned around and feel down some stairs. Louis was left with his mother and sister to care for.
I love the HP books, but I agree with the movies not being as good. And once the books got longer, the movies just couldn't keep up. The first long one could have easily made two movies and they would have been much better off. It's like trying to do Magic Kingdom at Disney in a day. You can do it, but it should really be done in two, even three days if you really want to enjoy everything without nearly killing yourself in a rush.

I guess so. I just moved on from HP after a while. I never actually read any of the books myself. my dad read them to us as kids and he stopped doing that many many years ago around book...well, up to half blood prince since that's as far in the series as I am.

It's too early for me to be thinking in a straight line. I definitely slept way too much yesterday but I should be caught up on my sleep.. for the whole weekend...
After I watched the movie Dreamcatchers, some things made more sense seeing it. I don't know why but I just couldn't picture it that well. But they did change teh ending, or was it that they made two? I think they actually made two. The whole part where the guy goes into his mind and sees it like the office they use to look into was pretty interesting. How he grabbed his memories and took them in. Awesome. Kinda sounds like how I meditate if my mind is moving too quickly for me to sleep. I imagine myself walking into a dark room, the only light coming in is from the door. Then it slowly shuts and I'm left in nothing-ness. Then the hard part is to just not focus on any thought that goes through my mind. Just let them float through like clouds, you know? And then before I know it I'm asleep :P Works well for me :D
I think Anne Rice wouldn't approve something that was so far off her original novels, you know? Like, she has pride in her stuff. I know some writer who just want to get famous would probably approve anything just to make some more money off it. I mean if you're not the best writer and well-known, you could probably reach more people through a movie and hope that they say, "That's a good movie... I wonder what the book is like?" and then read that. I wonder what I'd do if I finished my stories and they wanted to make them into movies? I mean, with the advancements in technology they can pretty much make anything happen so saying that it would be too hard to portray on screen doesn't really float as a valid reason anymore.
I think that they should have started making two movies out of the books from the start! The only problem with that is that their actors would have been even older than what they are now. They can only pretend to be 14 or 15 for so long and once they get up into the 20's people wouldn't really believe it much anymore. Then they would ahve to get new actors and switching out main characters doesn't go over well. I don't like the Dumbeldor that they got after the other guy died. He wanted to do his own things and bring different ideas when playing the character if you ever saw the interviews with him. That's like changing the character! Like a whole new Dumbledor and that just really took away from the movie for me. Meh

*drowns in text just looking at Zephi's post* alright, now I'll actually read it.
I could never fall asleep like that. my ADD always makes sure there are thoughts in my mind and I've always had problems falling asleep. takes me hours sometimes. I get stories sometimes, but mostly I get distracted by a million noises and the tiniest imperfection in my covers or that maybe a sock is falling off or my arm falling asleep....etc.
my books tend to sound like movies because I think very visual as I write. actually a lot of it would make a better anime because I really dream in anime and such so that's what I see when I come up with char. and stories.

I just had to buy a stephen king book today. One of my favorite movies of his, Misery, so I wanted to see how the book reads. There was like a Stephen king sale in the PX. :D What luck ^^

I've never read the book or seen the movie, but that marching show was awesome! we would be in the stands laughing our heads off as a voice called out from the field, "red rum...Red Rum....RED RUM!!" We were all just thinking of the kid in our band. Our band director was fond of giving us new names. one of my friends got called Terminator and another Snake Charmer. that was how this one rp got started...and that's where Kat was invented.

Holy Crap Kat! That's a lot of writing. You were talking about being burried MY post, HA! I read the first part but I'll have to go back for the rest. I added it to my favorites so I can go back and take a look at the next story. The first one sounded interesting, but in a way depressing like the first person said. Like, I want to know why the person felt that way, what drove them to that feeling. Did you ever write more for that?
I think that's my problem. I have so many ideas and beginnings. I wish I could sell them to someone so they could take it and run with it when they run out of things to write :P I think I get that from my mom. I was looking through her old notebooks and they were FILLED with the beginnings of some short stories. I was like AH-HA! It's YOUR fault! lol

But they showed their homework by sitting in a device that would play back their memories. Thats kinda cool. THAT could get people in trouble.. lol
Yeah... it's a wee bit for sure... <.< I don't really want to write anything from my stories that I want to finish incase someone thinks they can steal the idea. I'll just take the ones that aren't so original I guess...

It's been a long time since I read the book, and while the movie is playing on a movie channel this month, I couldn't watch it again. I can't even remember what the ending was in the book. I'd have to read it again, and though I actually love to read books and watch movies more than once if they're good, Dreamcatcher just wasn't that good. Most of that really is the whole "ass aliens" thing. I mean, why'd he have to go that route? He could have them coming out of the mouth, or ears, or bursting out, etc. Ugh!
Harry Potter-One thing I really looked forward to seeing in the movie was the portrayal of the big quiddich match where the opposing teams' mascots performed. I really wanted to see the veelas portrayed! That entire part was left out. There was just too much detail and "magic" that had to be done away with just to cut it down to a "viewable" amount of time. I agree with you though in that to make it work and break it into separate movies would have made it hard on them.
I believe Rice DID have much more say so with Interview with the Vampire, even keeping whole lines of dialogue. However, Queen of the Damned ticked me off big time with a few of the changes. Having Marius being Lestat's maker really ticked me off. It was Lestat who searched the world over to find Marius. I think it changed both how people could/would look at both Lestat AND Marius. Another biggie was the implication that the maker always has a connection with those he made. NOT true, and it's a detail that makes a difference through many of the stories. While vampires can "track" other vampires and "hear" them, they can NOT do so with one they make. Another change was that Akasha killed all those people and was on a mission to rule the world made of people who would worship them. They left out that she only killed the men. Women were only killed if they defied her. Also, she didn't do all of the killing-she made the women rise up and do it, and had Lestat join in. Men were the root of evil in the world, so to speak, in her view, so they were to be eliminated except for "breeding" so that all evil in the world would be stopped. Now THAT change I could understand and deal with, but on top of the other two biggies, it only made things worse. Again though, it's still one of those movies that I'll watch more than once.
Ok, can you tell I really got into the Rice books or what !!! Are we blinding you with all this text, Kat ?!

maybe just like a blog onto paper then you edit it all out later. it sounds nice, but wouldn't really work. I just wish I could go back and remember all the stories I started or thought about writing or all the good stuff in dreams. I remember that show! I always loved it!
yeah, I was hesitant to post that much of my story there (the second one) but Jo was giving me some good help so I kept posting. I don't really intend to publish that novel though. maybe if I finish and edit it I might change my mind, but it lacks the kind of organization I would want in a novel. Its the very rough start anyways. I don't think someone would steal my stuff...

Yeah, I know! I'm longwinded anyway, and get me on a topic I like and whoa ! Jack Nicholson-man, he's perfect for that kind of thing. I bet they didn't even have to do much makeup work on him when he played in Wolf. I really like most of his movies. You want a really "duh" moment? It took me years to figure out "red rum". I guess I missed the part in the movie where they showed it in the mirror, and it never occurred to me in the book. When a book is really interesting, I read really fast because I want to know what happens as soon as possible, so I often times miss hints.

I just don't want someone to take my ideas that I think are original, they might not be but I've never heard them from someone else, maybe because I kinda refuse to read other peoples stuff but still. I don't want to put it out there and not finish it while someone gets inspired by my stiff and writes a hugely successful novel and when I go to publish some day they say, "Oh, that again?" I'd be crushed. I guess I'm just really ptotective of my stuff... =_=;;
Yeah... that was a lot about Anne Rice anyway Echo! lol... I think Akasha had something with all the evil in the world coming from men though. LOL... I had this idea to write a book where it was the women who were becoming "extinct" in a way because of some chemical that covered the earth making the chromisomes change in the womb to male. And there was going to be one girl who was hidden by her father until he couldn't hide her anymore and then gets taken to live in the Female palace where the men work as slaves and work to breed. But they only get one chance, if they don't make a female then they are killed. Hehehe... I like that idea :P
Red Rum was weird though... but since it was in the mirror it did make more sense :P murder... just the way the kid says it makes you think somethign else! Darn kid!

I should be more protective of my writing, but I write a lot more than I know what to do with. why not help out some poor museless person?! as long as they aren't stealing the idea completely, not borrowing parts or being inspired from it. I rp a lot too. people could be stealing all those ideas too! so I don't really care.
that's horrid! It makes me think of the Carpathian novels which are nothing like that, but the race is going extinct because there are barely any females left and there's a defect so that most children die in childbirth or a before their first year. If any child lives, its a male because females just ain't workin for some reason.
I remember learing about red rum in elementary school. we would tell cheesy ghost stories and there was this bloody mary one and it was told with red rum I believe.

Bloody mary? Hmm... I dont know the whole thing behind that.. I did a report on her when I was in the 6th grade I think? Yeah. She's a pretty cool person actually. Amazing things that she did in her life to get such a terrible nick name. :( Kids can be so cruel, when it was actually her father that was the EVIL one!

I don't think Akasha's idea was that far fetched either. Truth be told, I think she's right. However, I wouldn't want a world without men in it.
And yeah, that kid was creepy when he said that.
