Phoebe.

1. Defensive.
She was defensive about her dad looking old, and snapped at her friend when she talked bad about it (pg. 21). She called Salamanca ‘critical’ when she asked why Prudence didn’t sew the hem of her skirt herself (pg. 88-9). She snapped at Salamanca when asked if she was crying, or when accused of being upset (pg. 131/168-9).

2. Paranoid.
She believed that Mrs. Cadaver had chopped up her husband (pg. 32). She believed that the boy, Mike (who is later unveiled to be Phoebe’s half-brother), was a potential lunatic (chapter eight). She would’ve called the boy who helped Salamanca’s grandmother a lunatic that would stab them (pg 93). She believed that the “potential lunatic” kidnapped her mother (pg 127). “What if we knocked on his door and he opened it and pulled us inside and slit our throats?” (pg. 235)


à 3. Ignorant.
An example of this trait is how she acts toward her mother. She claims she is “fat,” and refuses her mother’s slightly burnt brownies. She pushes her mother away when she tries to show affection (example, wipes away kisses, avoids hugs), saying that she’s too old for that and has “grown out” of being her “mother’s little baby girl.” Her actions toward her mother are examples of this trait; she is unaware to how much she is loved by her mother.


à 4. Melodramatic
Makes a big deal of little things; connection to being paranoid. “I’m sick. Honest. It might be cancer.”(pg 132) “I think I’m having a genuine heart attack.” Getting a slight headache “=” migraine/potential brain tumor (pg. 166). Also links to “paranoid;” everyone is a potential murderer in her eyes; her mother’s disappearance becomes a murder, etc.


5. Critical.
Speaks about Mary Lou’s family being out of order compared to her own family (example, the cholesterol scene; chapter twenty-five); “Mary Lou’s family is not nearly as civilized as ours.” (pg. 46); “Mary Lou’s parents do not seem to have much control over things.” (pg. 47) Told Salamanca about her poor mattress versus the one she had at home, how she slouched, and that Sal’s closet was a mess (pg. 165). When doing her oral report on Pandora, she gave some not-so-mild hints about how some of her friends were not very “high-class,” such as the hints about matching plates and feeling like a welcome guest (pg 172).


6. Uptight/orderly:
Compared to Mary Lou’s family, the Winterbottoms are very stiff and orderly. They speak politely, and refrain from being rude. They act very respectful and tidy. (pg. 29-32) This uptight, stiff behavior from her parents rubbed off on Phoebe, seeing how she does not have a very wild, loose personality, but more of a stiff, put-together personality.


How Phoebe is central to the story: (points and highlights)

- If it weren’t for her, Salamanca would never have unraveled her own story.
- Half the book was about Salamanca with Phoebe and their adventure with the “lunatic,” Phoebe’s missing mom, and Ben (though Ben is mostly on Salamanca’s part).
- If Salamanca never met Phoebe, then she would never know about Mrs. Partridge and the quotes she gave them. The title was derived from a quote among them, and the quotes also added to Phoebe’s mindset of the so-called lunatic, and in which added to the adventure and the story of Phoebe’s.
- If it weren’t for Phoebe, and her knowing Mary Lou Finney, Salamanca might’ve never gotten to know Ben as well as she does.

How Phoebe is central to the story: (paragraph)

The character I find that is central and quite essential to the book, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, is Phoebe Winterbottom. Many things would not have happened it if Phoebe Winterbottom hadn’t have been in the book. If it hadn’t been for her, Salamanca would’ve never unraveled her own story, hidden within Phoebe’s. In fact, half the book was about Phoebe’s story, and their adventure with the “lunatic” and Phoebe’s missing mom. Phoebe is also the reason Salamanca knew Ben as well as she does. This was because Salamanca had hung out with Phoebe, and thus she would have hung out with Mary Lou, since Mary Lou and Phoebe were very good friends, too. Naturally, since Ben was temporarily living with Mary Lou at the time, this cause Ben and Salamanca to hang out and know each other quite well. Another reason Phoebe is so vital to the book is that she was the neighbor of Mrs. Cadaver and Mrs. Partridge. Mrs. Partridge had left them the quotes on their porch, and it had added to Phoebe’s mindset of the lunatic, which added to her story and their adventure. Also, the title had been derived from a quote Mrs. Partridge had left them, thus Phoebe was partially responsible for the title (Phoebe > Mrs. Partridge > Quotes > Title). The book would have been far from the same if not for Phoebe. The story would have been much more different, because of the reasons having stated. They are the many reasons as to why Phoebe is central and crucial to the story.
