omfg weird I got into a third place in Menes Halloween treat contest thingy xP <3
I won 3k. yei!

anyway, glad to see there's been so much talk here :P keep it up!

on the topic, I don't know if my cosplays look cheap because I try to keep in the budget (which is usually very little >.>..). I don't have lots of money but I make all my outfits myself or with some help from friends. besides, making the outfit is half the fun of cosplaying :) knowing that you've accomplished something. ^^

and I try to stay in the character, but I can't help it if my own personality overpowers the character. that's why I usually try to pick characters that I can relate to! (:

mwahhaha 11-10-2009 06:57 PM

I didn't mean cheap as in cheap, but more as in "poorly done."
and congrats! :D that's so cool. what was your costume?

YamiSora 11-11-2009 11:54 PM

@Sagitar: coolies and congrats! XDD

@mwahhaha: OMG! your lee! XDD anyways, yea I do go to conventions. Before this year, I just went to Anime Vegas and Anime Expo, but for once, last week, I went to a different convention which was PMX....I only got to go one day because of ride issues, but other than that it was fun.....but SOOOOO small I tell yea LMAO whihc is cool cause you get to see the same people over and over again XP

KamiKira 11-12-2009 11:14 AM

*points at Yamisora* OH WOW! Fancy running into you here xD

Hi! I'm a cosplayer too :D My friends and I are currently working on a Heart no Kuni no Alice cosplay for Fanime. So far we have an Alice, a Blood Dupre, Elliot March, Ace and Vivaldi. And one of our friends decided he wanted to be one of the unnamed guards. XD;;

Foxberry 11-12-2009 11:29 AM

Ah! I was wondering where one of these would be. Seems I have found it. ^_^

Hello all, I'm Foxberry and I'm rather new to cosplay and conventions in general. My first convention was Animazement this past year in NorthCarolina. I have recently moved to the Bay Area of CA and I've been immersed within cosplay. I wasn't aware that it was so big out here.

In any case I've been to several conventions and events thus far this year including; Animazement, Kinyoobicon, SacAnime, Cosplay Dodgeball, Anime Destiny, World Hetalia Day and Yaoi-Con.

My next event is a Holidays Hetalia meetup in San Francisco, and a meetup in the Golden Gate park.

Despite being 26, I really have come to enjoy the hobby and feel that anyone of any age should do this if it's something they enjoy.

My cosplays thus far; Reno (FF7), Casual!Germany(APH), Hojo (FF7), Fem!Scout (TF2), Formal!Gokudera(KHR), BJ*Generic Black Reaper*(TWEWY), Estonia (APH), Dr. Franken Stein (SE).

My upcoming cosplays; Ukraine (APH) and Dr. Franken Stein (SE) for my Holiday meetups. And a surprise cosplay. ^^

And my next convention will be Animation On Display. Uncertain who I will be cosplaying then.

As you may have noticed I tend to crossplay more, but that's because I like the male characters more and I don't have to show too much cleavage- not like I have any, anyway. XD

http://koke-momo.deviantart.com is my main cosplay gallery;
you can also check out my blog for convention reports here: http://foxberryconreport.blogspot.com/
I'm also Foxberry on cosplay.com

Hope to talk to you all more often in the future! ^_^

KamiKira 11-12-2009 01:29 PM

@Foxberry: AHH!!! You do the GG Meetups? A friend of mine likes to go to the Hetalia ones. XD
I live near SF!

I used to love AOD. So, that's very exciting.

YamiSora 11-12-2009 08:46 PM

@KamiKira: Holy Crap! yea rly! XDD thats funny, such a small world.....er......menewsha XDD

@Foxberry: very cool, you've been to more different cons than I have. I finally went to my 3rd different one just 2 weeks ago called PMX. but I've been to Anime Vegas and Anime Expo about 8 times each. XP

KamiKira 11-12-2009 10:31 PM

@YamiSora: I know, right? I didn't know you were a cosplayer! That's very cool.

I should upload my album here...

I've only been to AOD, Anime Destiny, JTAF and Fanime. I've wanted to go to Anime Expo. I almost got to go, until something happened and I had to get a refund almost last minute. I was sooooo depressed!! I'm not a huge con goer, but I wish I could be. I would do it constantly! But Fanime is all that I can look forward to but I feel so guilty. I met my ex at fanime and his friends this next fanime decided they wanted to do my cosplay idea. And he doesn't want to join (he is angry at me ... and no one knows why. But I think I do) He's doing Prince of Tennis... Again DX HAHAHA!! He was Kaidoh last year. I wish he could have been Ace for this group cosplay, but his friend Kevin is doing it instead. LOL SOOO COMPLICATED!

And the dress this year, I have to buy it. It's far too complicated for me to do and my mom. DX So here goes $150 DX And I still need a crown hahaha

mwahhaha 11-13-2009 03:22 AM

@YamiSora: yay! I'm Lee <3 ^-^ <3 omg, you went to anime expo last year? when LMC was there??? did you see them? we had MOVE at Acen last year. . . not that I hate them, but I'd rather have seen LMC. **shrugs**
@Foxberry: oh, do you have pics of you as reno? he's one of my favorite characters. My brother is thinking of doing a day as Dr. Stein, too, but I think he's still undecided. And yeah, cosplaying as male characters is more fun for some reason.
@KamiKira: that's sweet that you get to do a group cosplay. whenever I try to start one, everyone drops out. The closest I'm getting is my brother will be gintoki for a day and I'll be katsura for a day (Gintama). Hopefully we'll be dressed accordingly on the same day, XD

YamiSora 11-13-2009 03:29 AM

@kamikira: yea I'm a cosplayer....not as much anymore because of college and whatnot. But once I get a car, i'm gonna try to go to all the Anime cons in california as much as I can.
and stealing your idea? thats rly sucks! XP

@muwahhaha: nah I didn't. I rly don't go to see bands unless I've heard of them. but MOVE I've heard of......I wanna see MOVE.....T3T

KamiKira 11-13-2009 05:41 AM

@mwahhaha: Two years ago I was Hijikata :D And my friend Otae!! XD YAYA GINTAMA LOVER <3 I would love to see pictures!!!
@Yami Sora: Can I friend you? And You should go to fanime! Join my room... we don't know each other well but I wouldn't be against it XD

YamiSora 11-13-2009 07:14 AM

@KamiKira: Sure! ^^ but i'm gonna do it first! HA HA! YAY another friend! XDD anyways, I know, i'm sure once I'm older, I'll be able to go to all kinds of cons, INCLUDING fanime! LMAO i've heard good stuff about that con......and what room?

waytothedawn 11-14-2009 02:00 AM

I really wish that I could cosplay, but since I don't have a job at the moment that is a little hard to do. I've always wanted to cosplay because it always looks like so much fun. Same thing with cons, which I might be going to one of my first cons next year. That is if my friend and I can get the money to actually go. I have been watching anime for the past 4 years and loving every bit of it. I don't know why other people haven't watched it yet.

whitebeast 11-14-2009 02:25 AM

D: I have to push back my dream cosplay for a latter date.

I decided to volunteer to help a friend's group since they were lacking one more member.

...And I have no idea how to be in character.

It doesn't even help when people keep saying how much I AM the character.

Srsly not buying it.

T_T

@way to the dawn

You could try once? Put aside some money then do it once.

At least once. Just so you know the feel of it. :D

I've been....cosplaying just once a year thanks to other obligations.

So I try to make it count.

^^

waytothedawn 11-14-2009 02:38 AM

@whitebeast
I will try it once, or maybe a few times. My favorite anime at the moment is Death Note, and my favorite characters are L and Matt. Looking at what they wear, I think I could pull theirs off, especially L's. I think the main problem would be wigs, since they are kind of expensive. Guess I'll have to save up money when I get some.

whitebeast 11-14-2009 02:44 AM

If you do invest in wigs, try to go for ones that are both cheap and with good quality. Not everything expensive is good, remember that. But it's pretty dumb to go for the cheap all the time too.

Go for quality! That way whenever you have the chance, you can always get back to them even after you stashed them away. Wigs of higher quality tend to last longer.

Ask for feedback and recommendations. :3 You'll never know what you'll find from there. :D

Yup. Saving money is the key. ^^ Patience too.

Thanks to me being tied down to cosplay obligations, I'll only cosplay something especially for this year ONCE. While everyone else were 'supposedly' committed to that same obligation as I was...cosplaying up to five times.

._.

And ignoring the obligation we all committed to.

xD

waytothedawn 11-14-2009 02:52 AM

@whitebeast
I'll have to remember that. When it was Halloween my friend said I should look for a wig at just a regular store. But I figured those weren't the best of quality since they tend to usually look messy. Sometimes I wonder how people can have the time and money to make multiple cosplays.

whitebeast 11-14-2009 03:12 AM

I also wonder about that too.

But the ones here who cosplay a lot locally---aren't too big on accuracy and quality anyway.

So we don't get surprised when people pass by and are wearing...clown wigs or something of a lower/same quality.

As long as it looks the same, then that's it.

Sometimes I feel people who cosplay a lot put things in a schedule and then more or less follow it?

Some also cosplay a lot but it's mostly a few characters and they're just repeating the chara but in different cosplays. ^^;; So wig/hair wise? No more problem. Just procuring more clothes and shoes.

...As if that isn't a problem. xD

waytothedawn 11-14-2009 03:24 AM

I never see anyone around here cosplay. Maybe I need to get out more or something. lol I did make a headband like Haruhi from Melacholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and someone actually knew where I got the idea from. It was actually quite shocking. I could never follow a schedule, because it seems I always hold my homework off until the last minute. lol I would be one of those people who stay up late trying to finish a cosplay right before a con.

whitebeast 11-14-2009 04:18 AM

XD You're the sort who might really need more time than most to be able to make it through.

But that's okay.

As long as you finish. <3

waytothedawn 11-14-2009 04:35 AM

lol
Although, I would probably be so excited to cosplay I would get it done in a few hours, and then wear it around the next day. Yes, so long as it gets finished then all is good.

whitebeast 11-14-2009 06:06 AM

Don't rush too much if you can.

Take things in stride.

But of course not to the point of being lazy.

Set deadlines.

x3 Though I have yet to actually follow my own advice... in a way.

I try. But circumstances beyond my control. T_T

YamiSora 11-14-2009 06:45 AM

man, from one coversation between two people to another I tell ya! XDD

anyyways, on the wig thing, I get all my wigs at the places like Party City and they work just fine!
Their not to bad and the price is good for how long they last.
For example: I got a wig about 4 years ago and I was in a hurry to put it back in the bag one time, so I just stuffed it in the package *which you should NEVER do!* and it got screwed up and I had to throw it and get a new one.
But they last a long time if you take care of them.............it also helps to get a those heads to put your wigs on.

oh yea, and another things thats great about them is sometimes the wigs form party city are special, like my white wig for Yami Bakura from Yugioh glowed in the dark.....I was pretty interesting when it came to watching anime stuff in the dark and whatnot LMAO

KamiKira 11-14-2009 10:34 AM

@Whitebeast: Offtopic but is that Sengoku Basara Characters in your sigi???

Anyways... I remember the day when I vowed never to use wigs. I now am the owner of a few wigs, and will be an owner of a purple wig with drill curls by april next year. My friend in Japan styles wigs really well, so she buys them there, styles them and sends them to me. There is a good wig place on ebay that I've used for two of my wigs and for the cosplay my friends and I are planning to do for fanime this year (But the alice wig my friend found is a lot better than theirs color wise). You just have to shop around. Also, do yourself a favor and really compare the look of the wig to the character and how it looks on the models they use. And a handy skill to have is styling. It's cheaper to buy a wig that hasn't been styled and style it.

Here are some linked picture examples of our Amatsuki Cosplay with before and Afters:
Tsuyukusa Wig: Character Image My Friend is Modeling the Before Me Posing with the Wig
Tokidoki Wig: Character Image Me Modeling the Before My Friend Posing with the Wig

We even bought my Momo Adachi Peach Girl wig and styled it. It originally was an Orihime Wig that we then layered and trimmed.
We based it on this: Momo Cover Ehhh... Best picture I have XD Cause I weighed sooo much at the time

SO MANY IMAGES! I'm sorry xD
I love cosplaying! My next venture is going to be such a pain. I can't sew it so I'm going to have to buy it TwT It's going to cost me $200, then the Wig is going to cost me $40, and the Badge for Fanime is $50 So before I even get to the convention Center I'm $300 in. I hate how expensive this is! I'm seriously going to have to use Vivaldi over and over until it falls apart. I've made all of my other cosplays. I might take peach girl with me though.

Foxberry 11-14-2009 11:29 AM

@KamiKira: GG Meetups? I don't think I've heard of them?
@YamiSora: Well a few of the cons I've gone to were just one day tiny cons but I try to be as active in the cosplay community as possible. I've heard of PMX and AV as well as AX, but I haven't been to any of them. I've been asked to go to AX but... It's still a bit too far for me, I like the local cons.
@Mwahhaha: I do; I'll post a few links at the bottom of my post. I love cosplaying Dr. Stein, I debuted him at Yaoi-con but didn't get much love... It was a rather weak cosplay wise at Y-con this year... Apparently it's usually better... I'm assuming it's because of the economy. >< Anyway; if your brother needs help with the bolt for Stein I'll post something on how I made mine lol.

On other notes... Honestly; I like to spend money on wigs... Most of my cosplays are pieced together or altered, like my Stein costume. I feel that wigs play a MAJOR role in how your cosplay looks. I'm a bit more strict about that because I've personaly dealt with wigs from Party Warehouse by the apartments here. I would NEVER again buy another wig from a party/halloween store because they are very troublesome to deal with.

LUCKILY the wig I got was Hojo's wig and he looks dishelved anyway. But that wig was a real pain in the ass and never again will I buy a cheap party store wig. I have decided to buy nothing less than 25$ in a wig. I use both Cosworx and CosplayDNA, as well as the market place on coscom... So far I have loved every single wig I have gotten from those places.

Anywhere else I've been dissapointed. Granted my first wig- wasn't the best but it works for a Before-Crisis Reno.

However I would NOT pay more than probably 40$ for a wig. Then again I style my own wigs, I don't get them predone.

In any case here are the photos that I promised; please note though that I did the Before Crisis version of him, so he does not have a pony-tail. ;3

These two were taken at the lake where I used to live:
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/a...no/2022419.jpg
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Reno/reno.jpg

Most recent event, yaoi-con; the wig was restyled and personally I feel it looks better:
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3969/s6304137.jpg

My boyfriend cosplayed Before-Crisis Rude, and one of my good friends cosplayed Advent Children Rufus Shinra.

On another note; why I chose NOT to go with the orange-red that's in the AdventChildren version is because I prefer the original FF7 burgundy hair-color.
