Cherry Who? 12-27-2008 05:11 AM

Is there a story to it, or is it just commentary?

Aislin 12-27-2008 05:16 AM

Hmmm... how do you mean?

It's a nonfiction book, but there is a clear thesis; it's all researched based without being one giant clump of ever-boring citation. Gladwell brings in lots of different examples, so if you're interested in sociology the narrative will probably intrigue you. Personally, I really enjoyed it.

He shows that social epidemics exist in the way which he describes before going on to assert that we can use them to enact major social change.

I'm not sure if there's a story behind his urge to create the book, though.

Cherry Who? 12-27-2008 05:38 AM

I meant is the book itself a story. I see now that it isn't, though.

Aislin 12-27-2008 05:51 AM

Nope. T'isn't like Syrup or The Richest Man In Babylon-- it's all traditional nonfiction format.

Sorry!

Bishielurfer 12-27-2008 07:28 AM

I love sociology, so that's sound like it'd be an awesome book for me to read. ^^

tirethminet 12-27-2008 07:29 AM

@cherry - here

@bishie - not like. literal panorama, but just take pictures that are slightly overlapping of your room in a circle.
the panorama feature on a camera will just take a really wide picture of something, usually used for landscapes.

@aislin - at that point when i typed that, i had about 200mb left on my hard drive. i have since burned the entire first season of gintama to dvd (fit exactly on two <3) which gave me about 8.5gb. which is now lowered to 5.9gb. i think i have download problems.
MALCOM GLADWELL. you are making interested in nonfiction, which is veryVERY hard to do.
i've heard of the tipping point and seen blink and outliers at work, so i know what you're talking about, i just never thought to check what sort of topic they would be on.

ps.
i totally saw this on the front octagon at work the other day and went "... drunk princess leia? YEAH, WOOHOO!" and i want to read it.

pps.
room of doom.
please excuse the width. it is a panorama-esque picture. the only thing you are missing is the empty wall behind my bed.
i will give you an interweb cookie if you can find all three dinner plates. (one is very obvious, one is a little hidden, and the last is almost impossible)

Aislin 12-27-2008 08:38 AM

Ooooh, I'm so excited! I'm glad you're both thinking of reading it.

*happy dance* :boogie:

@ Leenie: Heh. Okay, the Leia book actually looks kind of interesting, and I kind of want to read it too. Let me know if it's good!

My eyesight is terrible. I'm not sure if I should try this plate thing. *clicks anyway*

Your bookshelves make my heart sing!

tirethminet 12-27-2008 09:08 AM

i may actually take a break on all of the books i'm reading currently to borrow that one from work. MAY. i have to consider it.
we can borrow them minus the jackets (therefore, only hardcovers) and we have to sign it out with a manager, plus we have to bring them back in the exact condition we took them in, but we can borrow books. i have yet to use this privilege to my advantage.
well. that picture was supposed to be 2000px wide, but photobucket shrunk it to 1024px. (both of which are smaller than my screen width)
if you can recommend me to a picture hosting site that doesn't shrink the images, i'll upload the bigger one.
<3 my bookshelves.
once i clean up that mountain in front of them, i'm taking more pictures of all of them.
i had taken some before and posted them to my facebook, but i have gained at least ten to a dozen books since then and i will be rearranging some of the bottom shelves on my novel cases to more easily fit all of my misc books. :]

ps.
did meyer just make bella use the word spasmodically?
seriously?

pps.
ARTIFICIALITY? WHO USES IT? EVER?
WHERE IS SHE FINDING THESE WORDS?

Aislin 12-27-2008 09:11 AM

You can put it up on filedump.net. That's what I've been doing for all of the images on The Half Principle.

Your work sounds awesome! You do work in a bookstore, don't you?

I've got the sudden compulsion to become a business owner just so I can establish that policy with my employees. Plus give them nice health care benefits and scholarships for their children. It's a shame I'm not rich, really.

I love that you're organized with your shelves. Mine have limited space, and thus an "Uhm... does this fit here? Close enough" policy of organization.

EDIT:

Actually, those are both bona fide words. I don't mind them at all. I use them. So long as things stop smoldering, all is well.

tirethminet 12-27-2008 10:09 AM

filedump looks silly. XD
i do work in a bookstore. it's fun until i get 7+ hour days and my feet start to die.
it's a shame we all aren't rich. XD
rich like the cullens. >_>;;;;
seriously, man. convenient plot devices like extreme and unending wealth make me a little upset.
well, i used to have the majority of my books in boxes in a storage unit, so once we got in the new house i was like "i am getting a wall of bookcases"
the sad part is i may have to take out some of the books in the bottom shelves, like picture books and reference books and whatnot and put them in the bookcase next to my desk which is currently being occupied by magazines and other miscellaneous crap, so i can fit more novels. x3
i know they're real words (since my spellcheck doesn't rape them with red lines) but it's just ridiculous since bella did not seem like a person to know the words and it's not like she's had the chance to just flip through a dictionary recently. p:

ps.
edited link, but here anyway.

pps.
please, please tell me that whatever the hell is with up with jacob and reneesme (orhoweveryouspellit) it NOT what i think is going on.
i will first have a heart attack of shock and then die of laughter. quite literally.

ppps.
OHGOD. I WAS RIGHT. LOFUCKINL.
i am crying. and i can't breathe. ohmygawsh, hyperventilation.

Aislin 12-27-2008 10:23 AM

Ooooooh, yeah, the poor characterization and page after page of deus ex machina does get tiring. Luckily, though, people don't usually assume the Twilight series is serious literature.

I hope.

I agree with you on the words point. But it's not all evil: despite the incongruencies, those words give the books some modicum of educational value.

Plate search below:

I believe there's one on the top left of the bureau by your door (right side of the photo). There's one in front of your bed. There also appears to be a round, platey object on the window just in front of that, next to the box.

Did I get them?

This is very much like Where's Waldo.

Edit: Heehee. I think it is. And I felt the same way.

tirethminet 12-27-2008 10:51 AM

i didn't take it as serious lit, but THEY ARE MESSING WITH MY HEAD. T_T
it's all drama and crap and i'm like wtfmate?
psh. educational value my butt. more like MAXIMUM CONFUSION.
YOU GOT ALL OF THEM, I'M AMAZED. ::hands cookies::
sheesh, this series keeps getting MORE FUNKY.

ps.
in case you didn't notice, i type in caps a lot when i'm tired to the point of being hyper.
but now i am going to sleep. x____x;;

pps.
why is my room always the coldest/hottest in the house and always when i want it to be the opposite? :[

Aislin 12-27-2008 10:55 AM

Sweet dreams, Leenie!

And I only got all of them 'cause my room's a mess too. I have to be good at spotting plates so I can put them in the wash. I've had training.

FeyonaSaibre 12-27-2008 03:00 PM

Today I get to attempt reading both books at the same time. *laughs* I brought them both with me...

Dream_and_Die 12-27-2008 03:44 PM

@Leenie: I'm sorry, I have to ask. Is that a Jub Jub stuffed animal next to the purple penguin?
And Plates: Bed (duh) Window (so bright!) and top of dresser (ninja). I've cleaned your room to many times to not find them.

Stallion Duck 12-27-2008 04:27 PM

I think I'll have a try at this. I'll start with the books I read this month.

1. Rebel Angels by Libba Bray
2. Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsey
3. Can't Buy Me Love by Jonathan Gould
4. The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx
5. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
6. Dexter In The Dark by Jeff Lindsey
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.
13.

Dream_and_Die 12-27-2008 05:35 PM

I guess I get to be the first one to say (for once xD) 'Welcome and have fun!'

tirethminet 12-27-2008 05:42 PM

@dani - uhm... i think it is? a striped one.
and you've never been in this room before. XD

ps. i hate falling asleep while listening to audiobooks cause they go on ahead and i'm like "ohcrap."

No prob. Just would like to know the basic format if I want to read it. ^^ Which I just might some day. Those kinds of things do interest me. But I may have problems getting hooked if there's no story. I have a really shitty attention span if things aren't grabbing me by the throat and screaming in my face "LOOK AT ME I'M INTERESTING."

Yeah, that "plot twist" kind of kicked me in the gut. I just stared at the book like "o_O ......." for a long time and resisted the urge to just throw the book.

tirethminet 12-27-2008 06:40 PM

i have the same sort of problem with my attention span. XDDD
and deargod i was just like "wtf, man." and fell into hysterics. at five in the morning.
and then i thought a thought which bella commented on later. "
son-in-law? oh gawd that's gonna be awkward."

Dream_and_Die 12-27-2008 07:15 PM

@Leenie: I know I've never been in that room but I still know where you usually place your plates... Unless its the buried ones we find months later.
Books?

tirethminet 12-27-2008 07:32 PM

heehee. :3
really i just place my plates on any available flat surface.
like the one next to my bed?
that was on my personal recycling bin.
and why did you type books italicized, centered and as a question?

ps.
Quote:

"'Bout time somebody scored around here."
i can't help but adore emmett.
just because he is the comic relief after everyone else is DRAMAMAMA.

pps.
... chapter 26 is called "shiny"
....... WOW.

chicory.dock 12-27-2008 07:44 PM

This sounds fun! X3 It's perfect because the New Year is coming up, too.

List of books coming soon~

SERIOUSLY. I MEAN, COME ON. POOR RENESMEE. HE KISSED HER MOM. HE WAS IN LOVE WITH HER MOM. WHAT THE HELL.

And speaking of awkward... she's got vampiric hearing. How does she NOT hear her parents screwing a room away?

That poor girl...

Dream_and_Die 12-27-2008 08:48 PM

@leenie: Cause I wanna know if you have them. xD
