@aislin - franny k. stein, mad scientist. XD (bam)
and i actually found a series that i read in middle school that is being reprinted by a manga publisher. XDD avalon, quest for magic or somesuch like that. scholastic failed and didn't print the last two books of the second part of the series and because it never finished, the author didn't do the third part to the series. there were originally supposed to be three parts, 6 books each, but i guess it never got popular enough? and then i also found that there is an anime adaption to DELTORA QUEST. (fangirl squee) this is true about retail. a coworker said that after the first year in retail, you lose hope in humanity. and frankly, that is starting to turn true, but there are some hopeful customers out there. VAMPIRATES. (no, really. it's interesting.) there's some pretty good pirate books in the teen section. you just have to look for them. they usually have "pirate" in the title. XD (i accidentally put good vampire books instead of pirate. i think i need to go to sleep now. XD) crunchy is good. we very rarely have any sort of nut-based products in the house, though, because my brother is allergic. :[ @ehnvy - the mysterious visitor is no one important. really, they don't even mention a name or anything. you can highlight that if you want to know, but it's not much of a spoiler. D: ps. so guys, i was just doing a random browsing of the erotica fiction section on bn.com. (i was looking for a specific author because he came to my other store, so don't look at me like that) anyway, dracula. bram stoker's dracula came up 6 on the list. number six bestseller in erotic fiction. really? (and #12 and #42 and #66 and #144) (and dani, unmasqued is #132 <3) ... i just stalled in my search for this author. because i found piers anthony in erotica. with a book called "the magic fart" in the "pornucopia" series. ohdeargodhelpus. ERIC JEROME DICKEY. THAT'S THE AUTHOR. i kid you not, he had 30+ year-old fangirls. FAN. GIRLS. pps. aislin. Quote:

Erotica frightens me... I won't really touch the stuff...
about the closest I get to erotica is ~Tales of MU~ |
Deltora Quest! I ordered those books through my school's book club magazine thing and once the librarian interrupted my French class to give me them. They were shiny.
|
@ tirethminet: Haha it's taking all of my self control to not highlight it XD I'm horrible in that respect, I absolutely love the suspense yet when someone gives me the opportunity to find out I'm so tempted but I know the suspense will be gone afterwards so I'd rather not xD
As a kid I had this stupid manner (can't think of the correct english word D: ) where I would start reading a book by reading the last page just so I know what ending it would have. Absolutely horrible I tell you, I'm glad I got over that eventually. |

I'll have to try to find the book version of Stardust and some of his other books sometime then. |
@feyona - when erotica slips into the story to continue the plot, i don't mind nearly as much as when the plot is erotica. and along with the romance novels, erotica novels have annoying, weird covers with really generic names.
@kat - i love deltora quest. i should read it again, but some of my copies are starting to fall apart at the seams (literally) i'm afraid to open them. apparently, though, it's still in print, which was a shock to me. i miss those school things. :[ and she interrupted french class? awesome. XD @ehnvy - i really didn't give anything away, not a name or a real clue to the actual plot. although with what i put, it will take away the thrill of suspense, so unless you like that suspense, you're free to go ahead and highlight without feeling guilty. ;] are you maybe thinking of an urge to read the last page first? don't worry, even i lose words and the thought process will go something like this: "what's that word... it's synonymous with suchandsuch. except not quite. ohdamn, i just used it last week, too. @firsty - they just came out with a movie tie-in cover for stardust that should be in the teen section of your local b&n and there may or may not be some other different copies in teen or scifi/fantasy under gaiman. depending on which printing it is, they go in different places, but all of them are exactly the same book. |
@tirethminet: English isn't my first language and sometimes I just honestly can't remember the simplest words I've used a thousand times before. That goes both ways though, sometimes I only remember the english word but not the german one. It's hard juggling the two languages considering I speak/write/read english 99% of the time online but in RL I talk 100% german. The hard line between the two language just gets quite blurry at times.
|
i totally understand the confusion.
english is my native tongue and i speak and write it nearly every time i communicate. and i still get confused. english is just one of those languages you want to throw against the wall. |
Haah, trust me german is worse. Back when I was in school I had an A in english on my report card..and a C (B if I was lucky) in german. Ever since I started english in 2nd grade I've been better at it than german. It doesn't really make sense and I don't quite understand it.
But for example, we have extra letters, ä ö ü and not to forget ß. For the simple english word 'the' we have der, die, das to describe the gender of the following word (the fork = die Gabel). Not to mention that 'das' comes in 3 forms as well 'das, dass, daß'. And the german spelling changed recently (Schiffahrt became Schifffahrt - not the 2 f's turning into 3.) it made it all even more confusing *shakes head* Kudos to all those who learn german and don't give up, I knew I definitely would if it wasn't my mother language. |
Tireth: Yes, the librarian just appeared in my French class and messed up my very uncomplicated name so she nearly got sent away again. My mum used to get a similar thing at work and order random books for me so she got the free gifts.
Ehnvy: I would like to understand some basic German so I could travel in Europe to see some ski jumping. I don't know if you follow it but in any case bad luck in Oberstdorf today, I was rooting for the Finns so I'm disappointed too. First: I have a Canadian copy of Stardust I bought in a second hand bookshop in Portugal which travelled home with me to England. |
Man I wish my mom gave me free books as a kid... the only time I ever really got books was for Christmas...
|
Aww Feyona, I think the magazine might have been twice yearly or quarterly. I used to borrow tonnes of books from the library and school even then.
|
@tirethminet - Thank you. Now, I know where to look.
@KatMagenta - Wow. It did a lot of traveling with you. I'm supposed to go to Canada this summer. <3 |
I'm pretty obsessive over books... I own a TON that I haven't even read. I've been trying to stop buying them but I just keep seeing so many I want. My boyfriend and I have decided that as soon as we get a house of our own and we have the room we're making a library. It might have to be after the kids move out but if we get too many before that happens we'll probably either put some into storage or just use one or more of the kid's room as places to put our bookcases. ^.^
|
First: Unlike my book I've never been to Canada, but I hope you enjoy your time there. ^^
Feyona: One of the main reasons I started this challenge was because I was buying a lot of second hand books (because they were too cheap to resist) but not reading that many of them. Good luck with your library plans! |
Thank you. My sister lives there. I'm going to stay with her and her husband for a month in Montreal.
|
Thanks. If I'm still on this site after we move into a house I'll be sure to post pictures! <3

@Ehnvy: I tried to learn German a few years ago. Though I like learning languages, it was just to hard for me. xD |
@ehnvy - ohjeeze. now i'm amazed at my friend. she took german all four years in high school and still speaks it often. of course, i would have taken it over french if my school had offered german. all we had was spanish, french, and latin. ;_;
i would do it on my own now, but i'm slowly trying to teach myself japanese, and adding another language would just confuse me. :[ @kat - i understand the name problem. oh so very well. i would explain, but i might get that dexy's midnight runners song stuck in dani's head again. XD @feyona - wow, no free books? D: my mom always tried to encourage me to read a lot, but about middle school she was like "buy your own books" so :[ i know what you mean, i have at least ten books i've bought within the last six months and plenty older ones that i haven't read yet. good luck on your library! that's going to take a while to wait for the kids to grow up, though, so you should totally just get cheap bookcases to place in any empty wall space around the house. then when the kids move out, you can get really nice, big bookcases. :] @firsty - welcome. :] i've got a bunch of random book knowledge from working at b&n (and at the school library in elementary and middle school. high school was hella no, though, because those librarians were scary) @dani - XD <3 i just reorganized my bottom shelves so i can fit more big books!! 8D sooo... your books came today. i'll wrap them and send them out asap? i have other packages to send, so it might take a weekish? :[ |

Tireth: I saw your post before! My mum is called 'Irene' but gets called your name all of the time (and the song dedicated to her). I usually get my name but in one of it's many connotations; Katie becomes Katy, Katey, Kate, Katherine...

@FeyonaSaibre - In Arkansas, all kids until age 5 or 6 get a free book in mail each month. I guess to try to promote reading amongst kids. |
I just finished Jennifer Government. That was one of the best books I've ever read.

And my mom thought she gave me a nice easy name. |
@feyona - well, you can get cheap skinny ones. :0
that way you can get reallyreally nice ones when you have space for them. 8D or ones to hang on your wall (but if you're moving out soon, i recommend against it.) @kat - it is such a problem! in sophomore year there was an irene in a class that i took and i just told the teacher to call me "leenie" XD (i have been stuck with that nickname for the longest time, why not use it?) and if they don't call me irene, i get ellen. >_> at least irene sounds similar. and then i get double smacked in the face with my last name, but i'll stay out of explaining that one. :3 i... wouldn't think of spelling katie any other way. even with the popularity of katy perry. D:< @firsty - high school library was useless. and there were very few fictions books, most of it was all research topics. D:! @cherry - so when i go into work to return this book, should i get jennifer government, company, or syrup? (because apparently they have all three) @dani - teehee. <3 well, i had the bukkake udon song stuck in my head all yesterday. |
