Dream: I've been called 'William' because of my surname before. XD
Tireth: I wish I had the choice to make between Max Barry books. The only one on any UK websites I know of is Jennifer Government, and I haven't seen a single copy of anything in the shops. I got JF from the library and they had two identical copies just to annoy me. >.< I get Katey a lot, and I hadn't even seen that spelling until a couple of years ago until it appeared on one of my Christmas cards. |
My list is so sadly out of date ;_;
I've probably hit the 50 mark without even realizing it 8'D; Knerd, could you maybe remove my list from the front page? I've decided I'm starting over, right on New Year's XD And this time, I will update properly XD |
@Kat: Ah last names. ::shakes head:: I have a generic last name as well, and its masculine. So I get called that a lot because for some reason when people tell you write your last name first, they assume the first word written is your first name. :headdesk:
@Platinum: Yay! For thinking... you hit your goal... !? xD If you think you read that many you probably did. |
@kat - ohmygawsh, william. XD
and amazon.co.uk has max barry books. all three. @platy - gasp, you weren't updating? DDDD: |
No, I kept procrastinating ;_;
But yeah.. I'm a pretty fast reader. I'll read a 700 page book in 3 days or less, so I really don't see how I didn't hit the mark.. XD |

I read the second Twilight book within 2 days, but forgot how many pages it has, and it's 0:30am so I'm too lazy to go check xD Basically I also have to really be into a book to devour it like that. If I'm not I just read it whenever I got spare time or remember about it.

Thanks anyway Tireth but I've had bad experiences buying things second hand from amazon traders, and the delivery charges are killer. :/ |
I haven't read any of the Twilight books. I've seen a lot of people say they're good and a lot of people say they're bad. I don't know who to trust. I'm still debating whether I should give them a try or not. Maybe I'll watch the movie and go off of my liking of it.

If you've ever read teen novel series, it follows very much in that vein of writing.
I still prefer the classic vampire novel: Dracula by Bram Stoker. And Jonathan Harker is such a goob in that book. Oh! that reminds me... Has anyone read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke? I remember getting it for $6 at a Barnes and Noble, and it was a fantastically good read. It's a Historical Fiction with a dash of magic. |
I still haven't read Dracula. I really should. It's mentioned so much in Lynsay Sands' Argeneau series. But in her series, it's more like the vampires mention it, because they hate it. It caused humans to start staking them and everything. Because of it, they prefer to be called "immortals" instead of "vampires".

First - Oh dear god, do not judge the Twilight books by the movie. >.O The books aren't good, but at the same time they are. No amount of talking to people about it will tell you if you'll like it or not. It's best to just bite the bullet and read it for yourself. xD You'll either love it or you'll want to burn it. |
:lol: Is the movie good? I think I'm mostly iffy about the whole teen romance aspect of it. Since I'm no longer a teen, I can't really get into a lot of teen romance in stories. And, someone said the vampires have glittery skin in Twilight. Do they?
|
No, the movie is not good. xD
It's... the book is kind of long. And there's some building up to the relationship. But they decided to make the movie a standard movie length (about two hours). The whole thing just doesn't fit into two hours. So they rushed parts. So what was a slow-building relationship instead turned into them seeing each other about twice and then suddenly being in love. It didn't make sense in that aspect. The movie is good for people who have read the book and want to see some pretty well casted actors act it out poorly and quickly. It's good for seeing what you envisioned come to life. It's not good for the actual story, though. All the secondary actors were great. The two lead were not so great at acting. I am a[n old] teen, but I don't like teen romance either. I don't like teen books period since they're always so simple and dumbed-down. Twilight is my exception, though. And yes, they have glittery skin in the sunlight. xDD |
OK. I'll get the books when I can.
I hate rushed love stories. I'm definitely not a "love at first sight" believer. Why does their skin turn glittery in sunlight? I was wondering when I saw the previews and the vampires were out in daylight. I thought it would be a more typical "vampires can't walk in daylight" story. |
I... don't know why their skin sparkles. xD It was probably explained at some point, but I forget.
Stephenie Meyer doesn't stick too closely to the cliches regarding vampires. Some people see this as blasphemy, but I saw it as being original. No fangs, garlic doesn't offend them, a stake through the heart would do nothing other than piss them off (assuming you could get it through their skin, which is apparently really really hard), sunlight doesn't burn them, etc. The writing style is a little immature because she hadn't really written before. The first few chapters in particular are a little difficult to stomach. But it gets better as the book and then the series goes on. |
Oh. Thank you for the writing style warning.
The only more traditional vampire books I've read are Lynsay Sands' Argeneau series. Her vampires... Their race was started in Atlantis. Some doctors developed these nanos to try to cure cancer. Well, they tried it out, and they worked, but the nanos used the blood to repair damage. The doctors thought the nanos would repair the damage and then leave the body, but the body is always being damaged by sunlight and aging and such. So, they never left the body, and the person never got older, because they'd keep the person at their perfect condition. They have retractable fangs that developed over time to adapt to the world, but they don't bite mortals. It's against their laws. There are a few exceptions. Instead, they have their own blood bank and drink from bagged blood donated by unsuspecting citizens. They also developed better night vision since they didn't have blood banks back then, so they had to bite mortals. They didn't have the luxury of blood whenever they needed it, so they went out at night to prevent damage from the sunlight. It made life a little easier on them. They can be staked through the heart, but it doesn't kill them immediately, only if the stake is left in them for an extended period of time. Otherwise, the only way to kill them is beheading or burning to death. They're not allergic to garlic either. Oh, and they can eat regular food, but they don't need to. So after centuries of eating, most of them get bored with it and just stop. Oh, and they can read minds. How they got that ability, I don't remember. I don't know if it was explained. That was a lot. To add to the romance of the genre, an immortal can't read his/her lifemate's mind. Also, when they meet their lifemate, things are kind of... more exciting for them. They want to eat again and all that good stuff. |
Huh. That actually sounds pretty interesting!

Sure thing! Want me to link to a new list instead, or have you not made one yet? *hasn't been keeping up with the pages and pages of chatter* |
Yeah, they're pretty good. At least, I like them. There are eight books in the series so far. The next one comes out in March. I haven't read two of the books yet. My favorite two books in the series are Single White Vampire and The Accidental Vampire. They're two of the funnier books in the series.

Yeah, I highly recommend them. They're some more romance novels that don't really focus so much on the sexual aspects of the relationships.
Single White Vampire is Lucern's story. He's an author. He writes "paranormal romance" novels, which are really the true stories of his family members. The beginning of the book made me laugh out loud, literally. The Accidental Vampire is the story of Victor and Elvi. Elvi was accidentally turned into a vampire and knows nothing about it. So, her friend studies Dracula and other vampire things and tells her she has to sleep in coffins, can't go out in daylight, can't eat, etc. Victor is sent by their Council to investigate her since she's biting mortals (not turning them, though), which is against their rules. Of course, she doesn't know that. It's funny. If I'm remembering correctly, Victor is Lucern's dad. Weird that their books are my favorites. Oh, another thing about her vampires, they're only allowed to convert one mortal in their lifetime. If they convert more than one, that means they're rogue, and they're hunted down and killed by the Council. So, since Victor had had a lifemate, whom he'd converted, before Elvi, he wouldn't have been able to convert her into a vampire. I'll shut up now. You can read excerpts here. |
@First to Never Know: The Argeneau series sounds really well thought out! I love authors who think up new, intriguing explanations for old concepts. I'll add the first book of that series to my "Watch For" list. Thank you for describing it so well!
@Leenie: You'll be proud to know that I picked up The Graveyard Book! I also looked through the children's section to try to jog my memory about my favorite kids books. Are you familiar with either of these?: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by John Scieszka The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill @ Cherry and anyone else familiar with Paperbackbookswap: I sent out my first book today! I'm so excited! :boogie: Is anyone else a fan of the-leaky-cauldron.org? I'm reading Melissa Anelli's book right now, and I absolutely love it. Any one who likes the Harry Potter series or has ever been even remotely involved with the fandom should find it pretty intriguing. It also has new info from J.K. Rowling, which is excellent. :) If any of you have read it, I'd love to discuss it! |
@platy - dayum. i guess i could read that fast if, you know, i had the attention span to read straight through.
@kat - i... did not see that. here. the first three are amazon and not third-party dealers. @firsty - the twilight books are both good and bad. there's ridiculousness and hilarity. if you take everything in it with a grain of salt, you won't turn to hate it. those vampires sound kind of interesting. :0 @cherry - okay 8D "not so great"? the two main character casts were crap. @kitami - ... omg thoth is your bf??? @[email protected];;; and i did. x3 i keep wanting to read some of her stuff, but i always ignore because i'm too lazy to go searching through the dozens of books she has to find something i want to start off with. @aislin - yes! i am proud. :] jon scieszka i'm very familiar with most of his work, but jean merrill not so much (at all, actually. D: ) ps. so guys. i am totally watching torchwood with one of my friends who's visiting now. XD she recently got addicted to it. (from her mom, i guess) and she asked to watch the rest of the first season when i told her i had the first two seasons. :3 (now i just need to get her interested in doctor who. they're very similar in subject, but very different in presentation) |

@Leenie: You know I just picked up Guilty Pleasures and The Laughing Corpse the other day at the library because the covers grabbed me. Half a country away and our brains still function as one. This is still creepy. PS - Tell Kelly I have her present so call when she comes home. xD |
