*Runs around* I get to order new books today!
|
I like this idea. I've kept solid track of what books I've read since late 2007, so this sounds like a great extension. I did 30 books in 08 with my biggest push being July and August (I think I read 12 books in that time period. So good!) and my biggest lull being January and December. Part of my mission101 was to read over 100 books in the 2.5 years and I'm well on my way to it. Clearly, 50 books is helpful. Here we go!
Allometric's Book List 09 1. Microserfs, Douglas Coupland371/371 2. Consider Ethics, Bruce N. Waller 34/314 3. Coraline, Neil Gaiman 162/162 4. American Gods, Neil Gaiman 588/588 5. Mister Sandman, Barbara Gowdy 266/266 6. Roasting in Hell's Kitchen, Gordan Ramsay 288/288 7. A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, Xiaolu Guo 304/304 8. Playing With Fire, Gordon Ramsay 285/285 9. The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch 537/537 10. Storm Glass, Jane Urquhart 167/167 11. Ghostwritten, David Mitchell 436/436 12. The Stupidest Angel, Christopher Moore 305/305 13. Survivor, Chuck Palahniuk 289/289 14. 1984, George Orwell 325/325 15. On Bullshit, Harry G. Frankfurt 67/67 16. Hey Nostradamus!, Douglas Coupland 244/244 17. Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer 277/277 18. Coyote Blue, Christopher Moore 294/294 19. The Time Traveller's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger 517/517 20. Neuromancer, William Gibson 271/271 21. Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman 370/370 22. Good Omens, Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman 382/382 23. Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad 118/118 24. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (a trilogy of four), Douglas Adams 786/786 25. Red Seas Under Red Skies, Scott Lynch 586/586 26. The Crying of Lot 49, Thomas Pynchon 152/152 27. Heartsick, Chelsea Cain 324/324 32. Sweetheart, Chelsea Cain 325/325 33. Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, David Foster Wallace 321/321 34. Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson 1152/1152 35. How to be a Canadian, Will and Ian Ferguson 274/274 36. Hide and Seek, Ian Rankin 261/261 37. The Other Boleyn Girl, Philippa Gregory 661/661 38. Play Dirty, Sandra Brown 404/404 39. Evil at Heart, Chelsea Cain 306/306 40. Brave New World, Aldous Huxley 229/229 41. The Master and Margarita, Mikhail Bulgakov 335/335 Tally 40/50 14148/15 000 I had a few months where I wasn't reading as regularly (July, November) and thus didn't meet my goal. Had I started Infinite Jest at the end of January like I had originally planned, I would have made 15 000. But being only 850 pages short is still good, eh? I think so. :D And now to outdo myself! Many large books are waiting for me this year as well as many canon staples and post-modern icons. Clearly this list needs more Vonnegut. Book List 2010 To be filled in! Current waiting titles:1. Proust was a Neuroscientist, Jonah Lehrer 2. Cory Doctorow, Little Brother 3. Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace 4. The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco 5. The Prince, Machiavelli 6. Tooth and Nail, Ian Rankin 7. The White Queen, Philippa Gregory 8. Number9Dream, David Mitchell 9. Little Big, John Crowley 10. House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski Tally 0/50 0/15 000 |
You know this is going to be yet another reason for me to throw random titles at you, right Allometric? It'll be like how we are with music but to a slightly lesser degree. :XP
|
@Kamikaze Kendra: LOL Get in line! I have three other people constantly throwing books at me! Thankfully, a lot of what you want me to read (Palahniuk, for sure) has been suggested and/or will be suggested at some point in the future by someone. :P I'll be drowning in pages before you know it!
|
Yeah, but Palahniuk's a given. I'm talking about completely random titles. Like Ransom by Julie Garwood. Or The Crimson Petal And The White which you have to read eventually. Despite it's lulls. haha.
|
welcome, allo~~
ps. i did not even see these guys, but the book which must not be named was a cosplay subject at the con! DDDDD8! and it pains me so. but sadako with a pink penguin on her head makes up for it. |
@leenie: :Sigh at cosplayers: Yay for the pink penguin though.
I went to the library to start a new series and the first book is only in large type. @[email protected] Not only that but it has pure white pages. Contrast, ouch. |
I just started reading "The Stepford Wives" by Ira Levin in hopes that I'll like it enough to actually watch the movie. I don't know if anyone has seen the movie/read the book, but the commericals seemed interesting enough and I don't want to ask my boyfriend to watch it with me unless I like the book enough to actually want to watch it.
|
@dani - well, you know, there were at least two DOCTORS i saw. 8D
(i took a picture of one on friday and sunday.) and, just for you, i took pictures of grell, kyo, eliazbeth & ciel, sailor scouts, and, uhm, the most amazing jack costume in the universe. ewwwww large type and contrast. D:! @feyona - the stepford wives movie was good, as far as suspense mystery movies go, but i heard that it was nothing like the book. but i liked it and saw in theatres twice, so. XD |
Well now that I'm reading the book I'll just have to watch the movie to see what the differences are if it's THAT different. I know for SURE there was one scene they probably would have left out of it. >.>;; Page 19 is DIRTY! XD
|
@leenie: You are truly an amazing friend. Was he on stilts? Oh and if you are still going as Matsumoto, I'll be Nemu with you.
|
@feyona - dirtydirty! XD
@dani - he was on stilts. he walked by me and he must've been at least 7-8ft tall. YAY BE NEMU WITH ME. ~~~~~ i should probably get to work on that costume. and i'm still considering a sailor moon character, but it's hard to pick. D: princess kakyuu still seems like my best choice. |
@leenie: I'm not doing the sailor scout anymore. I'll only do it if a groupd of us will do it. Maybe next year.
I plan on going to the large Barnes and Noble in Menlo, the one with two stories. ^_^ My fiends went to a huge mulitstoried one in NYC. I'm a little jealous. |
awwww no sailors?
well. then. yay? but only because i won't have to wear a short skirt or see-though clothes. o_____o;; yay rangiku~~~~ we should get someone else to be lieutenants with us. i know that ernie was gin at animenext last year. who else should i try to cosplay, though? i totally want to cosplay meirin and female ranma. XD and possibly ringo from airgear. i may be trying for nareesha for a-kon, if i go, since marty is going to be there. :3 (squee.) |
I've ordered a whole stack of books. I will be adding to my list soon! Yay.
|
I need to go book shopping again. I have so little to read for pleasure anymore :gonk:
|
Eep, I've just properly looked at allometric's list. I have Microserfs to read, but I have to finish my stack of library books first. I keep thinking when I'm finished the books I have now, I won't get any more out but I know I will. They have series 2 Torchwood books I need to read! XD
I'm not even sure if the book I ordered from PlayTrade has been posted yet. ¬_¬ |
@Shadow: What did you order?
|
OMG! I'm going to cry. My boyfriend TOTALLY ruined the end of the Stepford Wives for me. *sobs*
|
@kat - series two torchwood books?
i gotta read some. @[email protected];;; @feyona - that is evil, PURE EVIL. |
I don't think he meant to. I mean, sometimes I slip up when I start talking about books too. So I don't think he was being mean or anything. But I started noticing all kinds of stuff that I wouldn't have put together at first. Like the drawings and the tape recorder. XD
|
Tireth: Well have they have the cast photo from series 2 on them so I assume they're set at that time. I hope that means Ianto will feature more in them. :/

I still have to figure out what I'm going to be reading next. I've been getting paperbacks out of the local library's paperback exchange, but maybe I should read something non-fiction, since I seem to have slowed down reading fiction. I wouldn't mind reading the next book in the series that Island in the Sea of Time started, the characters and setting were pretty well explored. I had started reading Julia Cameron's diet book, not because I need a diet, but because I love what Julia Cameron has to say, but I was reading it in spare time and didn't check it out from the library, and someone checked it out from under me. -.- I guess I know better but all of her books were on the shelf, so I just didn't think. Yeah, people seeing that and reading that all they have to do is write to lose weight, without mention of food, yeah that would be too much for some peeps to resist. I appreciate the premise of that idea, but really, you can't be afraid of food. |
