Rubber? That's so cool.
I'm pretty sure that duct tape will have a similar effect though. |
Massage- Sewing cloth? :gonk: No way would i be able to do that!
Dream- I want rubber book covers! That's awesome. |
They were awesome but if the book was to big they would rip straight in half. xD
|
Awwww, the poor book covers. XD About how big of a book could one put them on? And do you have an idea where I could buy them, or do you make them somehow?
|
They ripped on a 700 page hard cover text book of mine. XD
They could fit a book the height and width of a DVD and go up to a pretty big text book (just not mine apparently). I bought them from a uniform store years ago. xD |
@Iltu: I just wanted to make sure you knew. Sequels aren't always advertised well, and Jones never gets the publicity she deserves. (Howl's Moving Castle doesn't count because many fans of the movie still don't realize it was <loosely> based off a book). Same with Robin McKinley...

House of Many Ways needs to come out in paper back like right now. Robin McKinley, I read the book Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits. It was fantastic. I think I have a couple of her books on my to read list as well. You are so right though, a lot of good authors don't get half the recognition they deserve and their books are never properly advertised. While another book (sometimes poorly written) becomes popular overnight. Maybe authors like Diana Wynne Jones and Robin McKinley are just to creative for the masses. Their books aren't "simple" enough for some people. (Although that part in Howl's moving castle about his real family... @[email protected]) |
*jumps in*
Yay for Diana Wynne Jones! I read the Chronicles of Chrestomanci when I was younger, as well as Fire and Hemlock. Please tell me that you guys have stumbled across The Tough Guide to Fantasyland? Because it's hilarious, and I think you might get a kick out of it. The whole thing poses as a dictionary to commonly found terms in the world of Fantasy... while, at the same time, serving as an excellent parody. Observe: Quote:
 Makes me smile. Hello all! Have you ever heard of Christmas-and-Easter Christians? I seem to be a School-Break-Only Menewshan. It's saddening, for I like this place. I missed you guys! I'll be around for a bit today. School starts up again next week with a project due date, though, so I'm likely not to be exactly ubiquitous around the forums during this break. 'Ello Massage. Don't believe we've met before. I'm Aislin. :) |
*waves to Aislin* I'm Fey, how are you!? <3
|
Dream- Thanks for the info! ^.^
Ah, Diana Wynne Jones conversation time?! I LOVE her. Her books do need more recognition! And no, Howl's Moving Castle does not count in the slightest. It butchered the book. I haven't seen it, and I never will, but I know enough about it to know that is did. I've read a fair few of her books, I'm slowly trying to work my way through all of them that are for teen and adult readers. :) I think so far I've read Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, House of Many Ways, Dogsbody, Conrad's Fate, Dark Lord Of Derkholm, Year of the Griffin, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, The Game, and The Merlin Conspiracy. I loved all of them, excpet The Merlin Conspiracy, which I only liked, not loved, and The Game, which was a good read but I wasn't terribly fond of it, charming as the characters were. As for Robin McKinley, I tried to read Dragonhaven by her, but I couldn't get into it. :/ It was more the writing style I didn't like than the content, really. Since the writing style was specific to that character, though, perhaps I'll give some of her other books a try. Do any of you know of any of her books that might be in third person? Dragonhaven was first person, and I'm not a huge fan of those to begin with. Hey Aislin! *waves* How are you? |
Hey Fey! I remember you. :P
Hey Iltu! I'm considering fangirling your signature. I love the new avatar, too-- but I'm not sure if it's new-new or new-because-I-haven't-been-here-new. I'm doing alright-- basically lazing around the house contemplating food and literature, so I'm pretty happy. I haven't been able to do that in weeks! How are you guys? Also: I've never come across Robin McKinley. Should I look for her-- and if so, which book? |
Aislin- Thanks! Our flight attendant actually said that. XD I thought it was really funny. And this avatar is new, actually, mostly because I change it about twelve times a day. And thanks again! ^.^ I feel so complemented. Your avatar is very pretty as well- I lvoe how earthy it is.
Oh, sounds like a nice relaxing break for you! I'm pretty good, though I have a big bruise on my foot and it's killing me to walk. X.x I don't even know where it came from! |
Ah! It's an epidemic! My girlfriend had a similarly black-and-blue foot problem last week. She was limping, cranky, and mostly adorable. But also cranky.
Hopefully you don't have to do too much walking? Crutches may be helpful, if you're really impatient with the pain. The only downside is that you'll feel kind of silly explaining to the empathetic friends and family that, "Nothing's wrong! Don't worry-- I just bruised my foot." People tend to ask questions when you use crutches. You can tell people that you got the bruise while kicking a peg-legged man during a pirate fight. :D Hope that it gets better soon! I need to start using the airline service that you do. Awesome humor on the part of your flight attendant. |
Aislin's back! Uhm Robin McKinley, read her Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits book. It's the first book of hers I read that made me want to read more of her. Basically it's a collection of short stories (she co-wrote it with someone) about mermaids and water spirits.
Oh, haha. She co-wrote it with Peter Dickinson, her husband. I'm okay, really. @Howl's Moving Castle: I liked the movie, but (of course) I liked the book better. Then again I love anything done by Miyazaki. It's one of those movies that was different enough that I could separate it fully in my mind and not want to harm someone for slaughtering a book. xD |
Aislin- It's not bad enough for crutches, so I'm hoping it'll clear up within a week. Oddly enough, it doesn't hurt to put weight on it, but when I bend it or walk, it's crazy painful. :gonk:
But no, I don't have to do alot of walking, except from class to class and such. So that's good! And I'm sure I can shove dog walking duty on someone else for a few days. And thanks so much for your advice and well wishes! <3 Hehe, it was Southwest that I flew on. All the flights had very nice flight attendants. |
Thanks, Dream! I've added it to my Paperbackswap wishlist. :)
I've actually yet to read or see Howl's Moving Castle-- I have the book on my shelf, however, ready to go. Iltu: Awww-- puppy! You has a doogie! This makes the bruised foot doubly sad, for doggies are terrifically fun to walk. What kind? I'm going to disappear for a couple of hours to do my Responsible Bit. I need to go for a run to justify the shower that will make my hair aesthetically acceptable enough to allow my trip to a local restaurant-- all because I'm really craving a specific burrito. |
Aislin- Howl's Moving Castle Really is an enchanting book, I hope you find to read it soon!
I've got two lovely doggies, actually. One is a nine eyar old Golden Retriever named Pogo, the other is a four year old Havanese named Gonzo. Awww! Goodbye, and see you later! Enjoy your burrito. :P |
@Iltu: Have you read it's "sequel" or it's sequel yet?
@Aislin: No problem, if you like the retelling of fairytale's she (Robin) also has two Beauty and the Beasts stories and a Sleeping Beauty one. |
Dream and Die- Yes, I've read both Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways. ^^ Such great books, both of them! Not as good as Howl's Moving Castle, of course, but that's hard to beat.
|
I love Howl's Moving Castle! : D
The Miyazaki movie, I've never actually read the books. xP I've heard they're very different, so I don't know if I'd like the book after watching the movie. XP |
You should read it, Jersey, I have a few friends who loved the movie, read the book, and liked the book plenty. :3
|
:raises hand: That's me! xD
I haven't read House of Many Ways yet, waiting to buy it in paperback. T_T |
I ended up just getting it from the library. ._. I couldn't wait! *is weak*
|
@Diana Wynne Jones conversation: I actually own ALL but maybe five of her books (she's written more than 40). The Crestomanci series, The Dalemark Quartet, and The Homeward Bounders are my favorites. I'm really looking forward to Enchanted Glass, which comes out this year.
@Robin McKinley conversation: Beauty, The Outlaws of Sherwood, Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, and Deerskin are her best books. I do own all of hers, although I haven't read Sunshine yet. Dragonhaven didn't thrill me. I like her older style better. |
Oh! I ordered Deerskin and Sunshine! I hope they get here soon I'm running low on books again. xD
