Jersey- I have no idea, but I can't wait for it to be published! I am quite expecting it to be the funniest thing I've ever read. :P

Cherry Who? 04-21-2009 01:20 AM

I heard of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I actually meant to mention it in here but I forgot.
My boyfriend loves the Pride and Prejudice movie, and he really loves zombies. He freaked out when he discovered it. xDD

Iltu 04-21-2009 01:22 AM

I'm so excited to get my hands on a copy. XD A girl in my English class said it was amazing.

I think I know which part you're talking about! This contains a SPOILER, so read it only if you're finished...X

Please tell me you're talking about the part when Laila realizes that Tariq is alive? Because that one had me dancing about the house in hysterics... and not the laughing, happy hysterics, either.

Have to know! Which twist are you referencing? Please tell your thoughts?

The thing is, when I first read the segment wherein Rasheed paid the Abdul to fool Laila, I thought, "Don't believe him! Rasheed is scum... this has to be a setup--" and I was predisposed to believe that, because Rasheed abused Mariam so abhorrently. But then, getting caught up in the plot again, I figured that I was being excessively hopeful about Tariq, and wanted nothing more than for Mariam and Laila to just be gone from the horror of living with Rasheed.

So when the twist came? I was still compeltely surprised. Hard not to be-- the writing is just so good! It threw me for a loop and I was so angry that Laila had suffered that much emotional pain over Rasheed's lie.

What did you think about the ending? I was elated that Mariam ended Rasheed for good...
... but when she was killed by the Taliban? I cried. Mariam's entire life was filled with disappointment... I know she was content with her actions when she died, but-- she deserved more.

Rasheed as a character also incited emotional torrents for me. How did you respond to him?

Reading about life in Afghanistan from the perspective of women was hard enough, but made doubly so by Rasheed. Half of the time I felt enraged and wanted nothing but pain for him, and the other half I felt helpless because it seemed like there was nothing for Mariam and Laila to do. The man was sickening, pathetic, and domineering in a way that made my stomach turn.

(A warning... the spoilerbox is filled with text. Sorry! I loved the book... )

@Massage: Oh, I hope you do read The Graveyard Book! You're bound to enjoy it. Gaiman's playful, clever and generally amazing. The Graveyard Book is actually my favorite of his work... although I feel childish for saying so, since I'm definitely above the target age group. He's written some lovely complex narratives too, but this book is simpler-- something you read entirely for the sake of enjoying the story. The writing seems to retain some sense of childlike wonder, if that cliché makes sense.

It's also filled with puns! :boogie:

The ending of the novel gave me happy-goosebump tinglies on my arms. It was sweet and awesome and wonderful and... yeah.
:sweat:

@Dream: Definitely read it when you get the chance. :)
Have you seen Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility? I'm reading the book... And I'm a fan of Rickman... I can't decide whether to cave and watch the movie now, or wait...

Bye, all! Off to do schoolwork now.

Stormy1 04-21-2009 02:14 AM

Aislin:: I only read the top little paragraph (I'll read the rest when I finish the book in school tomorrow during my boring classes and lunch) but YES! Thats the part I'm at, like she just saw him. I had to force myself to drop the book when my mom asked for help with something. I felt like squealing when I read it. XD

Also, watch the S&S movie. It'll make you fall for Rickmen more as well as his character. I bought the movie because of his lovely self. : )

tirethminet 04-21-2009 02:27 AM

@massage - that would be frightening. a very frightening sales prospect.

@aislin - eheh. :3
i feel like a codemonkey sometimes.
oh star wars is ridiculous all over, but the newer ones moreso.
they should, but even without me working, they had to cut all of the full-timers by a full 8-hour shift.

oh no! don't leave us! :[

... DOOOOOOGMMMAAAAAAAAAAAA. :0~

@dream - oh. animenation.
she asked if i wanted to get anything, but i didn't. :/

@yuri - it's fine. :3
anndddd i dunno what else to add. :x

@shadow - omg. must read. XD

Dream_and_Die 04-21-2009 03:10 AM

@leenie: We have to go see New Moon. >>;
Graham Greene is in it. I'll probably freak out.

I really didn't want anything either, but a half priced book is a half priced book. xD

Edit: I just got to use the term ludicrous bovine in a term paper. My life is complete. :XD

tirethminet 04-21-2009 08:08 AM

they totally do not have that info on imdb yet.

i know, but they didn't have much of a selection of stuff i still need, so i'll just wait til a-kon and otakon.
i'm hoping to get the majority of things i need at a-kon so i won't have too much heavy stuff to bring back with me from baltimore. x_x
also, do you remember what the best way of doing your outfit we agreed on was?
was it the robe connected at the bottom so you could pull up and use the obi to snap the open top part together?
i think imma doodle up some quick sketches soon to figure out how everything is going to work out. @[email protected]

... ludicrous bovine? O_o;;;

Dream_and_Die 04-21-2009 02:02 PM

@leenie: They totally do. That's where I found out. It's not like I'd got looking for this info. It was an article though, not an entry and I found it when I was getting the year Dances with Wolves was made. Graham Greene was the awesome medicine man in that. ^_^

Yeah that's how we decided to make it. XD
Magically Nemu's bottom is all one piece.

If you like those you should definitely go look up P.C. Cast's other books, she's really good.

Oh definitely!
I've almost finished the first book and I'm -loving- it <3
Hunted?
I think it's in paperback~
At least, I -think- I bought it in paperback ^.^;
Maybe it was hardcover and I just didn't notice xD
-can't remember-

What are her other books themed around?
If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them :3
I'm always looking for new books to buy and fuss over :3

Dream_and_Die 04-21-2009 03:15 PM

@Yuri: It might be out in paperback already, I still haven't read Untamed because I read the first three in less then two days. So I think I'm going to wait till Tempted is out in paperback. xD

P.C Cast has crap-load of other books. xD
There's The LUNA Series, which I haven't read - yet - but looks good.
The Goddess Summoning Series is love. You don't have to read these in order (I didn't) but it would probably be better. Basically each book in that series is about someone in the modern real world who's fate somehow become intertwined with that of an ancient Greek God or Goddess. Let me add that Ancient Greece is almost like a parallel dimension in these books.

There's Goddess of the Sea (1) Story about a mermaid who switched with a female pilot and when the pilot comes ashore again... all she can think about is going back under.

Goddess of Spring
(2 and my favorite!), is the retelling of the tale of Persephone and Hades. Persephone really isn't Persephone and Hades isn't evil, he's brooding and seductive.

Goddess of Light (3) Apollo and Artemis get stuck in LA with no powers. Enough said. XD

Goddess of the Rose (4) A retelling Beauty and the Beast involving Hecate. XD

Goddess of Love (5) Venus goes to Tulsa to help out a young woman.

Warrior Rising (6) is a retelling of the Trojan War, were the only way to stop the war is to "distract" Achilles, and what better way then with a modern day woman?

I'm pretty sure they're considered Romance books, but they aren't like the Harlequin romance novels. xD
So yeah, I fully recommend Goddess of Spring If you want to try out the series.

Emma Corrin 04-21-2009 03:21 PM

Is Tempted the latest?
-thought it was Hunted- o.O;
Maybe I'm behind?
-bought the ones that they had at the bookstore last week xD-
Or maybe I'm just confused xD;

Oooo!
That sounds awesome!
I'll have to look for both series!
Goddess of Spring is -so- going to be my favorite!
My fave Greek God is Hades, and my fave Greek Goddess is Persephone <3333
Goddess of the Rose will probably be a close 2nd 'cause I love the story of Beauty and the Beast and I -love- Hecate~
Goddess of Light sounds absolutely hilarious xD
Goddess of the Sea sound cute~

I'll definitely have to buy all of them the next time I go to the bookstore :3

Dream_and_Die 04-21-2009 03:34 PM

Tempted is coming out in October. xD
That's why I'll just wait.

Hades is my favorite Greek God as well. :shakes fist at Disney for making him evil:

I pounce on any books that have to do with Greek mythology (not so much Roman, the names irk me).
Oh yeah, Aphrodite "prefers" to be called Venus in those books. @[email protected] I forget why, but it bothers me just a little.

Emma Corrin 04-21-2009 07:17 PM

T_T
That's unfair!
I'm definitely going to finish the series by then!
-is already on book 2-

I knowwww T_T
But even in that movie, I couldn't help but still love him xDD

Yeah -- the Roman names just aren't as "God-like" sounding as the Greek names~
Plus, the Greek names have a better ring to them :3

If I knew they existed I'd have jumped on them as well :3
I've honestly never come across any Greek Mythology books other than the one we read in 9th grade English~
If you have any other books to recommend, feel free to either list them here or PM them to me ;D <3
It seems so far we roughly have the same tastes :3

tirethminet 04-21-2009 07:37 PM

@dream - well... i just usually ignore the articles most of the time.
especially since i almost freaked (in a bad way) when there was one about robert pattinson hoping be the eleventh doctor. DDDDDDD8<
but he's not in the cast list of new moon yet, nor is it on his personal page.
it's on wikipedia, though.

i think 5 is still out in hardcover... whichever that one is.
i have the first, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. D:

@yuri - believe me, it gets really creepy having similar tastes with dream.
about half of our personal libraries are identical and the other half is nearly all things we would still like to read.
there's really only a few things we disagree upon. @[email protected]

Emma Corrin 04-21-2009 07:45 PM

@tireth: Lol!
But that's always fun!
There's so much to discuss and "debate / argue" over~
Not to mention all the amazing recommendations you can get ;D
Pluss - it'll add to my ever growing library ;D
Does teh tireth-chan have any recommendations for me as well?

Massage 04-21-2009 07:47 PM

I just got the book Slatewiper by Lewis Perdue.
Has anyone here read it?
If so, is it good?
I mean, it looks good, but do you think it was good?
And what about the author? Any other good books by him?

Dream_and_Die 04-21-2009 08:12 PM

@leenie: No, what is really creepy is the we organize our books the same way. Though I have different shelves I have the same things separated that you do.

@Yuri: The only other Greek God books, that aren't mythology books, are the Lords of the Underworld series but those are Harlequin "Paranormal Romances." Though there's a good amount of action in it (otherwise I wouldn't read it xD).

Emma Corrin 04-21-2009 08:28 PM

@Dream: Lol~
Who wrote that series / what's the series about?

Granger Danger 04-21-2009 08:35 PM

Since you're all talking about Greek mythology and what not, has anyone here read Percy Jackson and the Olympians series?

tirethminet 04-21-2009 08:58 PM

@yuri - it is fun, but creepy. XD

recommendations...X

well, there's the book i'm reading now, fly by night by frances hardinge, which is really intriguing.
and then there's the old kingdom trilogy by garth nix (although most people call it the abhorsen trilogy) which include sabriel, lirael, and abhorsen. and then a collection of short stories about the world in the book, across the wall
and melissa marr is a must-read. all very fantasy-modern. the books are stand-alone, about different people, as far as i can tell (her third just came out today and i have yet to go find it), but it makes more sense to read them in order since each book focuses on side characters in the other books and they go in something of a chronological order. wicked lovely, ink exchange, and the newest, fragile eternity.

i don't have much else to recommend since i haven't been reading as much as i did when i was younger, so. :/

@dream - that... is really creepy. we even have separate sections for bigger books. @[email protected];;

@jersey - i have not read it!
i kind of want to read it, but it's such a popular series that i naturally want to stay away from it. i'm a freak rebel. XD
(if i hadn't started twilight before the craze, i would have completely ignored that as well.)

I adore Greek mythology, but I didn't like that book. Of course, I never got past the first page... But I just did not like the writing style or opening at all. It was too angsty and reminded me too much of Maximum Ride. :gonk: But lots of people have told me it's good, and my brother loves it. So I am probably just a freak. I simply cannot bring myself to read further. D:

That's true~

All are in an e-mail saved and will be looked for when I go to the mall ;D
Thankies!

Iltu 04-21-2009 11:15 PM

Leenie- Abhorsen Trilogyyyyyy! (Yes, I'm one of the aforementioned 'most' that calls it such :P) Those are like, some of my favorite books. In sixth grade, I got Lirael for two bucks, hardback, just because the cover was cool. I couldn't find Sabriel and wanted to read that first, so I never read the books until the summer between 8th and 9th grade. They are GREAT. <3

Even my mom liked Sabriel, and she hates fantasy.

Emma Corrin 04-21-2009 11:25 PM

Iltu-chan~
Did you like the following books / would you recommend them? (was looking at your challenge list and saw them)
1.) Lust by Robin Wasserman
2.) Envy by Robin Wasserman
3.) Pride by Robin Wasserman
4.) Wrath by Robin Wasserman
5.) Sloth by Robin Wasserman
6.) Gluttony by Robin Wasserman
7.) Greed by Robin Wasserman

I keep seeing misc. books from this series and I've been meaning to look into them~
What are your thoughts? Should I buy / read them or would they be a waste of money / time?
