 Wait what?!? I can't even grasp that. I think I sat staring at the article for five minutes.
This is who the younger generation is looking up to. Goody, and we wonder why bookstores are going out of business.

It's sad when Kanye West writes a book full (or not so full) of "Kanye-isms." Just. Sad. T_T
I would never read a book written by someone who doesn't like books. That seems counterintuitive. :(

Knerd- Oh, the wonderful world of the Old Kingdom! Sabriel is one of my favorite books ever.
Kat- He's talking about others being self absorbed? Oh, that is rich. Here I've got yet another reason to dislike Kanye West. Ew. Why do such unintelliegent people become so famous?

I dunno, try asking Paris Hilton.
To me, the whole process of reading is something that can be enjoyed. You don't love reading just because of the content. Going through the words at your own pace and have the experience of carrying a book with you is pleasurable. And it allows you to grow in a way that television or the Internet doesn't - There's an interaction between your own mind and that of the author. It engages both the language center of your brain and the creative visual/auditory centers that help you imagine what is being described. So even if you're reading fluff about vampires in Washington, you're stretching your brain's boundaries. So this just makes me think that Kanye (or anyone else who doesn't read much) just hasn't found the right author/genre/subject for them.

Ahh, this reminds me of a cracked article I read the other day!
http://www.cracked.com/blog/what-if-...t-is-retarded/
Quote:
If Kanye West is retarded, then he genuinely believes this book contains useful words to live by, and that is horrifying.
Exhibit A is, of course, the fact that his book (which includes pearls of wisdom like “I hate the word hate!”), was not written alone. That’s right, this 52 page, multi-colored, spiraled collection of toilet paper was coauthored by J. Sakiya Sandifer. Why Kanye needed a second author is beyond me (”Hey, what’s another word for hate?” “Hm….Hate?” “NICE!”), but it’s not at all confidence-inspiring.
|
It kind of bothers me when people tell me they "don't read." I understand that not everyone is a total bookworm or has time/will to read even one book a month or something, but to completely and totally shun it with "I don't read" is just kind of depressing and, honestly, makes me think a little less of them. ><
It's really fine if someone doesn't read that much, but the whole "BAAAHHHH NO BOOKS READING IS STUPID" attitude bothers me.
A guy I know is one of those "I don't read" people and I'm trying to coerce him into reading. xD Some movies he likes were books first (like A Clockwork Orange) and I'm trying to convince him that it can be much better. He's not totally closed off to the idea, but I doubt he's going to do it. >>

I get the "I don't read" attitude from kids all the time.
That's one reason why I actually like books by Twilight. It hooks them in little by little.
Even comic books and manga can have a big impact on someone's reading habits. It makes reading seem more fun and less like a chore.
But most often, people don't read because they find it difficult. They start to shun it once the words move beyond their grasp and they can no longer follow what's actually happening. So from there, it's just a matter of building their comprehension and vocabulary skills.
Literacy is such a huge part of education now, especially with English as a Second Language classes.

I can understand it a bit more from kids. Kids can be pretty stubborn about a lot of things that they'll later come around to (spinach is actually quite tasty in salads :P). But when you've got a 19 year old saying it, I'm just like... raaahhhhhreadabook.
Some books can be difficult. I have problems with ones that are over 100 years old. >< I can understand them, but it's just awkward to read and hard to get into. But there are some books that are just completely effortless. I just wish they'd give more books a chance instead of judging them all based off of a few.

I'd like to share a few things; since I've nobody else to talk to about them. I was reading a new book that I purchased recenently at a grocery store. They're not such bad books. However, don't you just hate it when an author likes to repeat himself so much it's annoying? If any of you have read "The Eyes of Darkness" by Dean Koontz - you may understand what I'm talking about. He continuously felt the need to describe the main characters thoughts as "she knew it couldn't be supernatural; she was sure someone human had done it." throughout nearly the whole fricken' book! Whenever something happened and he had to describe it, it lasted for about a paragraph long, basically restating just what he had said a plethora of times before. It made me so annoyed with the book that I wanted to throw it. It was a good book, but the author/narrator twisted my nerves.
Also, I read "She's come Undone by Wally Lamb. My goodness, I wish I had known about the very explicit parts before I began reading it. They was very disturbing. One of my favorite books now, but the rape and other areas that discussed sex and whatnot...was almost too detailed sometimes. During the middle of the book, the main Character, Dolores, was annoying and really...odd. Though at the very end, it all ended well enough for me to say I liked it.

@Kanye Talk:He can't even spell words write or use correct grammar.... In the FIVE sentences throughout the entire book. REALLY?!?
People need to turn off the TVs and give their kids a book. :sigh:
It's the promise of illiterate children screaming "i no haf to reed cuz Kanye said it dum." that make me want to rethink my career path (because yes, they wouldn't even capitalize their I's while speaking). @[email protected]
@Jennifer: What's The Eyes of Darkness about? The title intrigued me.

It's a really great book. After reading it, I was hoping there was already a movie about it. But there isn't, sadly. The afterward pretty much cleared up why there hasn't been a movie yet. Don't let the title fool you too much though. It's probably different than what you might think it is. I can't really say much beyond that without giving most of it away. I'd let you borrow the book if you lived near, haha. :XD Hmmm, I wonder if there is a book exchange on the interweb. I usually donate my books to the library once I'm done reading them. Since it isn't likely I'll read them again. It'd be better if I could just swap it instead.

@Jennifer: Nope nothing like what I was thinking. XD Though I might pick it up at the library, one day. I need to make good on my goal to comb the non fantasy sections of my library this summer. ^_^
@Cherry: :3
That's what happens when you hang out with linguistic buffs and language teachers. You'll be interrupted mid sentence; "That 'I' didn't sound capital!" XD

I love the idea of people who say they "don't read". Even if you can count the number of books you've read on one hand you read. Heck, if the grand total of your reading in a week is a WAG's gossip column (Cheryl Cole is a legend) in a glossy magazine or the sports pages at the back of your local paper it's better than nothing.
I read that 'My Immortal' goth Harry Potter fanfiction last night so I don't know how I have any faith in humanity left at all. XD

Ah, magazines... I read a million of them.
...Most of them are targeted at middle-aged women, however. ._.
Mostly because I love interior design, so I love looking at all the cool ideas. I cut them out.
EDIT: I just counted, and I think it's about 6 magazines. xD Only one of them is targeted at my age group. xD

Unfortunately I am not. I have worse stories. This year seems particularly happy in their ignorance.
@Cherry: that was pretty much my reaction. Also, that article was hilarious. Some of the illiterate comments in favor of Kanye were even funnier.

I don't read as many magazines as I used to since my uncle and his boyfriend stopped buying 4-5 cheap magazines like Take a Break and leaving them at my gran's house. I used to buy the NME too until I realised I disagreed with about 90% of what was wrote in it. This month's issue of FourFourTwo magazine (footie innit) has a feature on Johan Cruyff (the cover picture is amazing) and I would like to buy it, but it's £4.10. I don't know how people can afford to get things like Vogue and Glamour every month. O_o
Feyona: Woo, I hope your house is ready for you to arrive in and fill with books. ;D
Edit: Oh, I went to the library today and finally managed to leave without books so I'll get to reading the books I already own. I feel like I've achieved something.
