Waterstones have sent me an email saying they want 'one lucky cardholder' to review the English manuscript of The Girl who Kicked the Hornets' Nest a month before it's officially released. Only, the link to the page said "Read the new Steig Larsson novel before anyone else!" and I got excited. Darn you Waterstones.
Edit: I've just updated my list and discovered even if I love a book it seems to take me forever to read its sequel. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is 16 on my list, and The Girl who Played with Fire is 61. Regeneration is 14 but The Eye in the Door is 62. I guess that means it'll be next year before I even start the third book in the Regeneration triology. -_-

Been away awhile, but the good news is I've been reading like some sort of text addict XD
I don't know what it is, but if I read just ONE book of a series, I HAVE to read them all. Its not a bad thing if the books are ok, but if they stink, it can be a royal pain.
Sassy, I know all too well what you mean, though I've been getting better at it recently, and stopping reading books I don't like. That used to be nigh impossible for me.
I am sure I have read at least 30+ books this year but I seriously don't count. And new books that acutlaly interest me get published so rarely I don't think I would be able to gather 50 in half year. T^T But maybe poem books count, too? owo
sadrain, you don't have to start counting at the beginning of the year. My list starts.. sometime in February I think? You can start counting whenever you like and you can also pick a different amount of books, as you're not competing with others - just challenging yourself. : )
Also, you can pick completely what you decide to count and what not. I personally count poetry and short stories as well, I know others are more strict and only count novels and sometimes not including graphic novels/comics et cetera.
Do FictionPress stories of FanFiction count? XD Some of them are so worthy of being published. owo
But, hm. I know I read the Dusk Watch this year, right now reading the Night Watch... And then this other three books I don't rememebr English titles of. XD;;;;
I will certainly try to hang around still, though, goal or not. ^^
I am constantly being tempted. My friend just lent me Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I'm trying to tell myself I need to finish at least one of the big novels I'm reading.. but it's so tempting. I also have to slap myself every time I see interesting books at the library. *sigh* I wish I had more time to read.

Yeah, exactly. Apart from comics, all the books I'm reading are quite.. heavy, in that they require the reader to digest every sentence. So I actually need to have proper time to read them, not just ten minutes on the bus or during breaks.
I just finished listening to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I'm going to try to finish the Half Blood Prince before the movie comes out, I'm going to try to catch it on Wednesday. :D
Oh, midnight? We don't have that here.. we're going at ten in the evening. I already have my tickets and I'm halfway through the audiobook! Going to try to listen as much as I can today.. at least I'll have the time since I'm stuck at home with a fever. :c
I can't remember if it was a midnight release we went to of the books, but we did wait in line all day for the last one. I even got off work early, me and my friends were the second small group in the queue, so we got it before most people. Also, there was a drawing competition and I was very surprised to find I'd gotten first place - I though my friend's drawing of Meropee Gaunt was much better than mine of Harry, Ron and Hermione - so I got the book for free! : D
The drawing contest sounds really neat. Yeah, I went to the Midnight show last night. I really enjoyed it. I know there are going to be a lot of people upset with the changes, but I'm not a purist when it comes to movies, and I think they did a very good job.
Sorry I haven't been able to keep up with the hang out lately. But if anyone has posted their list and needs it added to the front page, just pm me the link! I'll get it up there within the week.
I'm not too much of a purist.. well, I used to be, but I'm trying to get more understanding when it comes to movies-made-from-books. Reminding myself it's just one person's interpretation of the book, etc. I can't help feeling annoyed though when I think they did a really bad job of a book I really like though. :P
And well.. I don't mind, like with Harry Potter, that they cut out a lot of scenes I wish they'd included. The books are pretty long, so they could never fit everything in. I'd rather they cut out large chunks rather than try to fit everything in, making the movie too confusing. But what does irk me a bit is when they add in long scenes that have nothing to do with the storyline and are usually just to show off their expensive computer tricks.
Knerd, ooh, you're in Poland? That sounds awesome, do you like it? I've always wanted to visit there. : )
Those stupid long scenes bother me too. Like the flight on the hippogryff and the fight with the dragon...
That's part of why I liked this one so much. The pacing was so well done and I didn't feel like they added those kinds of scenes...
Though I thought the scene where the Death Eaters attacked the Burough was completely unnecessary, it did look mighty cool I thought. And it was so sad that they burned the Burough! But I must say.. instead of doing that scene, which didn't do.. anything for the plot or character development or anything (except maybe showing that Ginny was really brave? But I think we all knew that..) they could've done the big fight in the end instead! I think this director would've made it really awesome, so I didn't understand when they left it out. It wouldn't have been much longer than the scene at the Burough anyway.
Another scene I thought was unnecessarily long was the scene where Ginny hid the Potion book in the Room of Requirement. It was like.. we know they're completely into each other and it's a really sweet display of hesitant teenage love but does it really have to be so long? Really?
The third thing that irked me was when Dumbledore died and instead of, for example, phasing from sad faces in the courtyard to sad faces in the funeral or something, everyone started pointing their wands in the air and the viewer was left going WTF? Then, of course, when they erased the Dark Mark with white light, you understood that it was just the director/script writer being impossibly cheesy with a 'WE ARE HOPE AND WE ARE ALL TOGETHER NOW CRY BEFORE WE ADD PINK HEARTS AND GLITTER'.
But honestly, they weren't that horrible and overall, the film was so good, I didn't really mind much. I generally dislike the HP films, but this one was actually.. pretty awesome. :D
I hope we are allowed to talk about films in a book chat. After all, they are films made from books.. >.>
I'm pretty sure we're allowed to talk about it :)
I agree with you about those scenes to some extent, although I did read some things about why they did it that way that make some sense. I'd give you links to the articles, but I have no idea where they were--they were interviews with the director. I loved the little foreshadowings. This movie has more of a sense of purpose I think because the same director is doing the last two movies and knows where he is going with things.
Woo, I finished The Eye in the Door and I'm buying the last book in the Regeneration trilogy now. I couldn't resist looking around so I've ended up buying The Damned United and Neil Gaiman's Douglas Adams biography, Don't Panic as well. Three books for less than £9 isn't bad going though I don't think. *hugs free delivery*
Go ahead and talk about the film all your like. After all, you're just comparing it all to your own interpretations of the book.
@ ljosberinn
I'm having a great time! If you ever have the chance to visit, I can't recommend it enough. The Wroclaw area, where I'm staying, has the most intriguing history I've ever had the chance to study. Not only can you walk around the city and view gothic architecture from the 12th century, but you can still cavort with people who protested during the Solidarity movement. I had the chance to be a part of the Orange Alternative Happening last week, and I've pretty much fallen in love with that method of protest.
And right now, I'm actually in Prague!
There's a Franz Kafka exhibit going on right now that I'm dying to visit. But the way things look, I probably won't have the time. There's too much to do and see in just a few days, and I have no interest in wandering off by myself in a foreign city.
Ahh that sounds so amazing, Knerd! What's an Orange Alternative Happening?
And now I'm even more jealous. I've wanted to visit Prague for years. I wish I could afford traveling more. I'm the exact opposite though, as I love to wander off by myself in foreign cities.. any city, actually. :D
I just finished 2 books. In the Miso Soup and Running with Scissors (a memoir).
I liked both books. I highly recommend Running with Scissors. I guess theres a movie now based on the book but I've never seen it before. Has anyone? Was it good?
:runs into room with hands above head:
Wooo! I hit my page goal on my book list!
(Actually I hit it about two and half books ago but I wasn't online much in the past month.)
:happy dance:
So I'm addicted to that Sookie Stackhouse series. T_T (I feel slightly ashamed.)
<3 Eric.
So how has everyone been lately? I'm sorry I've been so absent, I was having family issues.
