Which Laurel K Hamilton series are you reading?

I got most of the books on Laurell K. Hamilton the Library can offer XP which means all the Merry Gentry series, the Anita Blake series (that I didn't read yet), her debut book, her anthology, and another random novel or two of hers @[email protected] soooo much....

I think I'll jump to Tamora Pierce books after my stuff rush. and next time I'll only put holds on no more than 5 or 6 novels ^.^'''''

RisikaFox 10-19-2009 08:30 PM

Dx ou got them all from the libray? Can you read that much in a month? O.o I know I always had trouble keeping up when I frequently visited the library, haha.

Yay, Tamora Pierce! She's one of my favorite authors. ^^ I actually have a book by her that 's in my pile waiting to be read...

LaVida 10-19-2009 08:38 PM

lol, yea, i'm having trouble reading it all - good thing you can renew books ;) and I borrowed it from the Toronto Public Library, which means that it's more like I put a hold on it and picked it up. And the Library is more or less all across Toronto :)

n tamora pierce books are really nice :) she has a way with words ;)

RisikaFox 10-19-2009 08:44 PM

Oh, I see. I still need to get the latest Anita Blake, and I haven't tried the Merry Gentry series, although everybody I've talked to about it highly recommends them.

Mmm, yes she does. I also like all the strong female characters in her books. Not to say that there aren't strong male characters as well, but it's nice to see the girls shine once in a while.

LaVida 10-19-2009 08:53 PM

I got Blood Noir upstairs in my room right now - that totally reminds me I need to finish my homework and read it XP. and yea, I heard some good things about Merry Gentry too, that's why I got all of them XD but the 1st book's...okay....because I guess since she introduced a ton of sex into the first book, while in Anita Blake there's still a ton of horror before the sex. Though I do like the creative fiction of Merry Gentry :) but Anita Blake has a more solid building base because vampires and shape-shifters are, well, vampires drink blood and shape shifters shift shape. but for fae, you can find legends and stuff that make them omnipresent gods to little butterfly fairies like that one in Peter Pan (the kiddy version). So after reading some stuff on fairies for a while, you go back to - what the heck's a fairy again?

RisikaFox 10-19-2009 09:16 PM

Actually, I meant Skin Trade. xD I think it's still in hardcover, it just came out this summer. I accidentally bought two copies of Blood Noir, so now I'm like... What to do with it?

Hmmm, fascinating. I have the first book, so I guess I'll see what you mean when I get around to starting it. ^^

LaVida 10-19-2009 09:45 PM

wow....books coming out so fast @[email protected] but I also kind of like Nightseer - the book she debuted with. It was a nice read :)

RisikaFox 10-19-2009 09:52 PM

Lol, yeah I hate when that happens. xD Hmmm... The title sounds familiar...

Oh my God! I actually have that book. I read it so long ago, I've forgotten what it was about. xD Now I have to find it and reread it.

Sunlit.rains 10-19-2009 11:15 PM

I love her Merry Gentry series, but I'm kind of bored with her Anita Blake series. The Merry Gentry definitely goes with the more traditional irsh fae faires. Today when we think of fairies we usually think of tinker bell. However it used to refer to all fae kind such as goblins and gnomes and trolls and all that. I'm not an expert on it or anything, but that's just what I've gathered after reading many things about it.

Yea, I didn't pick up the book much because I was a bit sick of all the types of fairies I was reading about because there's so many versions, you don't even know what fairies are anymore @[email protected] but so far it's pretty good :) and the Anita Blake ones are nice~~~ because I like mystery-action with a hint of romance, horror, and gore :) and you can totally make so many jokes on Anita - like, how me and my friend are so happy we don't have to juggle...what? 5 or was it 6/7/8 guys? XD It's amazing she can weave something like that XD well, I'm off to dinner and to try to finish alla those books :S

Iltu 10-20-2009 12:32 AM

Sometimes I wonder if I ought to give Laurell K. Hamilton a second chance, what with all the talk I see about her, but I just can't rouse the will to do it. Maybe if I finish all the other books I want to read. (Which will probably not ever happen.)

Unfortunately, the first book I read by her was also one one of the worst books I've ever read in my life. Death of a Darklord, I think it was called. It started off boring, the story was sort of okay once I got into it, and the ending was so patchy and awful that it just absolutely ruined the entire book. To this day, (several years later) I regret the money spent on it, and it's one of few books I've ever really hated. And that's just not something I'm keen to give a another shot, I fear.

omg, I agree, that book is AWFUL. I am trying very hard to read it and it's just NOT happening....I think I'm just going to return that book tomorrow >.> ugh, I wasted a week trying to read it...sorry to say this, but my English teacher was less boring than that book, and I almost fell asleep in his class (I have never fell asleep in any of my classes EVER).

Yes, PLEASE give her another try. Read ANY other book than that one - I bet if I had to read that as mandatory reading, I might have disliked it as much as Kite Runner. (okay, I don't hate Kite Runner as much now because it started to get interesting at 4/5 of the book.)

Iltu 10-20-2009 12:51 AM

I might, but it'll be way down the line if I do. I know it's a little bit unfair to judge and author by one book (an early one at that) but I'm still like, "eeeeh, I'm being wary and silly about this whole bussiness..."
In the event something changes in the near future though, can anyone reccomend me their favorite Laurell K. Hamilton book? Out of what's been mentioned recently, the The Merry Gentry seems like the thing I would like most, but I'm not sure I want to hit things off with a series if I do give her another go sometime. :)

See I REALLY liked the Anita books until Cerulean Sins. I just can't get through it. I feel like Anita has just...been changed in a way that's out of character and it bothers me. The first ones were more about the mystery and her being a necromancer with a love triangle. Now it's sex sex sex sex with 6 guys. ._. I'll probably try to get through them anyway because I love Jason and want to read Blood Noir

Iltu: Yeah she's a talented writer. I really have greatly enjoyed some of her books. She just sometimes puts too much effort into making the books about sex and it takes away from it in my opinion.

RisikaFox 10-20-2009 08:21 PM

I'm so upset right now! >.< So, I'm in the middle of the third book in the series I'm currently reading. Page 158, page 159, page 160, page... 17? O.O Nearly fifty pages in my book are missing because some defective machine put in the wrong ones. And the worst part is, I had to order it in the first place, so even if they replace it for me, I'll still have to wait to finish it. *sooo emo*

Iltu 10-20-2009 08:26 PM

Sunlit- Oh, dear, all about sex? That's a major turn-off for a book for me, Richelle Mead being the exeption. I'll have to be careful about Ms. Hamilton's books. XD

Riskia- Oh, that sucks! I'm sure they'll replace it, unless they're just a really sucky company.
That happened to me in sixth grade. It's not happened since, but I remember being so upset. The nice part, though, was that I ordered a set of five books, and only one had that problem. But I still got all five again, and I'd only sent back the one. XD

KatMagenta 10-20-2009 08:41 PM

Yay, I got a letter with my name and address for my room on so I can join the library now.

Sorry to hear about your book Risika. I bought a book from my library at home's book sale to discover the only two chapters that would have held any interest for me had been ripped out. -_-

Iltu 10-20-2009 08:43 PM

Congrats, Kat! :) That's good news indeed.

Oh! How rude of whoever had torn them out. I can't fathom why people would do such a thing to a book. D:

KatMagenta 10-20-2009 08:49 PM

The letter was telling me how much and when I have to pay for the room so it's not all good news. XD

It was a book about the BBC Radiophonic Worskshop and it was the chapters on Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that were missing. The rest of the book was about radio series I had never heard of or technical details about the equipment they use. I'm sure it was probably very interesting to some people, just not to me.

Iltu 10-20-2009 08:56 PM

Well, that's not so great then. XD But hopefully a library card will make it better?

Not interesting to me either, I fear. I guess that's a risk one sometimes takes with used books, as unfortuante as it is.

KerBlang 10-20-2009 09:00 PM

Hmmm, this sounds fascinating! I think I'll join in the fun.

So, I'll put a list as I read

KerBlang's Reading

Reading:

Finished:

1.Best Enemies | Jessica Burkhart (256 pgs)

Wanting to Read:

KatMagenta 10-20-2009 09:10 PM

Hopefully Iltu, my university library is great for reference but I think you need to jump through hoops to actually borrow the books.

Hallo KerBlang. Thanks for reminding me I needed to update my own list. ^^;

RisikaFox 10-20-2009 09:54 PM

@KatMagenta: I got it from Borders, so I brought it in and they gave me my money back. It's not available in the stores though, so I had to reorder it. Now I need to find something else to read that won't take longer than it will for my new copy to come in. Dx

On a more positive note, I conquered some more of my Christmas shopping while I was there. ^^

Yes. They don't start out that way though! I'm not sure what happened. About mid way through her Anita series I feel like it's sex left and right. Up until then it was really good. I heard a rumor that her newer ones are heading back to the way the original books were, so I'm a little hopeful.

It's better if you only read the first few books :) at least start with the first few books and then it slowly eases you into the ton of sex XP

Yea, I agree that Anita Blake's getting too much sex in the series. But they did take a break during Obsidian Butterfly (the first book of hers that I read :squee: and bought for 50 cents XD). But it's good to know she's going to go back to the old plot :) and I wonder who Anita's going to end up with....
