I'd love to give the challenge a shot! Hopefully I'll be able to get started over Thanksgiving--no time for guilt-free reading at school, alas.
Goal: 50 books by 22 November, 2010. List:
Not included: rereads, comics |
I haven't actually read Simon Armitage's version of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight but the documentary he made about it was awesome. He's possibly my favourite poet. ^^
Reading the book about Belle & Sebastian just makes me get the songs stuck in my head... |
I Found a copy of Green Mansions at the library and couldn't resist reading it again so that is number 9 on my list

Shamefully enough I haven't read a huge amount of his poetry, but I've really enjoyed all of it that I have. I actually "read" his translation as an audiobook, which I recommend: I think I appreciated the alliteration more hearing it than I would have if I read it silently. |
The choices for my GCSE English poets were Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage or Gillian Clarke and Seamus Heaney... my English teacher didn't like Carol Ann Duffy. -_-
I'm not sure if documentary is the right word. It was shown as part of the poetry season on BBC4 earlier this year, the summary is still on the BBC website. There's a little video of him reading the poem he wrote while he was on his 'journey' here too. |
I'm halfway through 'Hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world'
One weird, difficult read, yet exciting novel. c; |
I've read a lot since I last updated. Well it was mostly manga but it was a lot of reading so I decided to count it as books. The manga I'm counting isn't even half of what I have read this year.
The Madame Xanadu book was may favorite book out of the bunch. That graphic novel was just so....awesome. 25. Cathy's Ring : If Found Call (650) 266-8263 - Sean Stewart, Jordan Weisman and Cathy Brigg 26. Creatures of the Night - Neil Gaiman & Michael Zulli 27-30 Bakuman - Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata (vol 1-4) 31-40 The One - Lee Nicky (vol 1-9) 41. Madame Xanadu : Disenchanted (vol 1) - Matt Wagner, Amy Reeder Hadley, Richard Friend 42. An Abundance of Katherines - John Green 43-48. xxxHolic - CLAMP (vol 10-15) |
yay! I finally finished re-reading The Wheel of Time and am now on to the new one (#12)! I'm very excited!!!
|
Seamus Heaney? I quite like him. I have some of his poetry buried in my room somewhere, and I've always wanted to read his plays.
You guys are making me want to go find those books now! |
Hey all. Updated my list finally. >w> Not much of a change, though.
I'm reading a history book now! =D |
Yay! More non-fiction. =D
I was thinking about reading a Fine and Separate Place again, after reading those afterlife genre books, and then I found out it was made into a musical. It makes me wonder how many books are turned into musicals while we're not looking. D= |
I am currently a week behind on my reading but I am still plugging away. Currently midway through Goblet of fire.

In roughly half a month, my challenge time will be up, so I have a question. When the time comes for me to begin anew, can I just keep my old post and make a new list on there, and keep the old one is spoiler tags or something? Or will I need a whole new list post?
|
Heaney's translation of Beowulf is good, I think it's the one they teach here.
For some reason I want to start the Dragonlance books again but they're all at home. -_- |
I was going to read Rhapsody by Elizabeth Hayden but after reading 50pages about this one character and then it switching to somebody else for the rest of the book (600+ pages) and the original character had absolutely nothing to do with anything...D=
So I read something else instead ^-^ But how has everyone been doing? I haven't posted here in a while. |
I braved Black Friday to go to Half-Price books, and it turned out AWESOME. Lots of new shinies for me to read! <3
|
Iltu: I did the same thing lol! I didn't get there early enough to get any free stuff but I valued my sleep. I got a book and a few comics though x33
|
I didn't get there until around 7:30, so I missed all the free stuff, but I saved so much money that it was alright. c:

I just found out the borders near my house will be closing in January - I'm not sure why because it's generally busy there.
I'm tempted to go and buy up a bunch of books- but at the same time I'm not really buying books anymore unless I can't get them from the library or ILL. .. . .decisions |
@Shadowfoot -- that's the one, I keep remembering the title wrong, I have no idea why. But, it's not "Quiet" either, it's "Private". Sheesh. Maybe now I know why that book wasn't more popular through the years.
@siaasgn -- I hate to see bookstores close, even if they're part of a superchain. ._. @Iltu -- I LOVE Half-Price books. =D If only I'd had a day off. D= |
I feel like I should personally PM Cherry with the news, but I'll post here anyway:
I've started reading Jennifer Government. After wandering around my house yesterday, desperate for something fun to read over the holiday, it called out my name. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it before class starts on Monday. |
Knerd, I just googled that and looked at the wiki page for it, and instead of Logoland, I read it as "Legoland" and got all excited.
I do love satire, though and an Aussie view is always appreciated. |
Legoland? Haha, I'd read about that!
It reminds me of the Simpsons episode about Blockland. |
siaasgn- That's sad. D: Are there other bookstores near you?
Also, your avatar is amazing and fabulous. Guivre- I always spend entirely too much money there, but I LOVE Half-Price. I practically LIVE in their mythology/folklore/legend section (mostly looning for books about King Arthur), and if I step over I'm in the philosphy section, and if I turn around I'm looking about books about the occult and metaphysical things and shamanisim and astrology, and if I venture into the next alcolve all the religious books are there... And that's all right near the fantasy and young adult sections, so I rarely leave that half of the store. I'm sorry you couldn't go today. D: |
