Knerd- I think I'd like it to be The Once and Future King. I got about halfway through it before I lost it. I found it recently, and I think I'd like to kick off the year with a book as fabulous as that!

Dream_and_Die 12-20-2009 05:05 AM

@Knerd: I completely forgot to plan that! Hmm, I think I might make Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Just because I bought it and I really want to read it but I'm in the midst of a series. So my goal is to finish the Weather Warden books and start that one January 1st! xD Lets hope I can do that!

yukihimedono 12-20-2009 05:20 AM

I've had the Harry Potter series, Twilight series, and several Nora Roberts series... Some have been laying around and collecting dust. If I start the new year off, I want it to be a really good series. I don't even want to think about the others I have... >,<"

Does anyone else have any suggestions for me? I love romances, mysteries, supernatural; really anything, and especially if it's all mixed in together. :P

EDIT: I forgot to add Charlaine Harris; I love her books!

I think it was Shadowfoot that mentioned Tailchaser's Song to me? Thanks for the reccomendation, it's a cute story. ;)

Yep. I'm glad you're liking it. I'm a big cat fan, so I especially enjoyed reading it.

KatMagenta 12-20-2009 08:56 PM

Thanks Shadow. The train was delayed for half an hour but once it got started the journey was fine.

The Once and Future King is on my mental to-read list. There's a fair chance I won't have finished 2001: A Space Odyssey before the new year though.

My default suggestion for everyone is just Neil Gaiman. If the person has read his books I tell them to read them again.

Nana 12-21-2009 12:21 AM

This is a nifty idea! I've been wanting to read some books for some time now, so this will be a fun chance to do so! ^^

Try Richelle Mead (Georgia Kincaid series), Patricia Briggs (Mercy Thompson series), Rachel Caine (Weather Warden series), or Laurell K. Hamilton (Any series). They kind of write multiple series were supernatural beings are trying to live their lives, falling in love and then everything just hits the fan and they have to figure out how and why.

The Diana Tregarde trilogy by Mercedes Lackey is pretty good.

Dream_and_Die 12-21-2009 07:22 PM

True, I haven't finished it yet so I didn't want to recommend it to any one until I did.

siaasgn 12-21-2009 09:10 PM

I just added 2 more books to my list- that puts me at 54 for the year :0

I agree with the Neil Gaiman reading recommendation - I read anything of his I can get ym hands on and I like it all so much I'm going to start buying them - and I almost never buy books (I mean, I'm a librarian, why would I buy books when I have an entire library system to buy books for me ;) )

I'm not sure what I'm going to start with for the new year - I have a list of books I want to read, but I don't know if I'll actually put one on hold or if I'll find something else that I just have to read and skip my book list. :p

Guivre 12-21-2009 10:38 PM

Good question, Knerd. =D I'm really tempted to read something in French. But then my head might explode from the effort. D=

I just finished Ascending Peculiarity, a compilation of Edward Gorey interviews. A bit repetitive, but I did enjoy reading some of his thoughts on film. I kind of wished he had mentioned more things about his work and editors, if there was much change from his original manuscripts to what finally appeared. but it's probably just as well it remains a mystery. He did name drop so many authors throughout, I did make a list of things I want to read from it ...

Reeny 12-22-2009 05:40 AM

HOORAY! I have hit 50!!!! (Rose Daughter by McKinley)

*dance*

Knerd: My DH read the Wizard of Oz, and it needs to return to the library, but I think I will renew it online, and make it my first book of 2010.

Oh, btw, do I need to add my 2010 list to my 2009 list, or can I start another thread with that list????

Iltu 12-22-2009 03:19 PM

Congrats, Reeny! Way to go!

Knerd 12-22-2009 04:42 PM

Congrats Reeny!

You can make up a new list if you want.
I'll just replace the old link on the front page with your new one, when you make it.

Reeny 12-22-2009 05:09 PM

Thank you, Iltu and Knerd!

(And I'll make a new prolly in the new year!)

Iltu 12-22-2009 05:34 PM

I'm keeping my new list on my old list post, that way I can easily look at the books I read last year and all that. =3

Knerd 12-22-2009 06:17 PM

As long as no one is copy-pasting the same list in multiple posts, I'm happy. The "one list" rule is just there to prevent spam.

I usually keep my list in the same post, though. You can't get any better than the front page.

Iltu 12-22-2009 06:19 PM

Certainly not!
What have you been reading lately, Miss Knerd?

Knerd 12-22-2009 06:25 PM

A lot of my high school kids have been pushing me to read Twilight, so I just finished that up. It was exactly what I expected: Young romance, high school drama, under developed characters, semi-abusive relationship, and no plot. Sorry guys, I am definitely not a fan. But at least now I've given it a full chance instead of just basing my opinion off the movie and its Wikipedia article.

Now, I'm reading This is Your brain on Music by Daniel J. Levitin. It's pretty amazing so far. The first couple chapters involve a lot of music theory that I already know about, but that's helped me appreciate his writing a little more. I just wasn't aware of a lot of these studies that have been conducted in the past couple years. I can't wait to finish it.

Iltu 12-22-2009 06:29 PM

Knerd- Ah, that's basically exacatly what my mythology teacher said when he read it. XD I'm of the same opinion. There were waaaay to many apges in that book, and bella really needs a life beyond obsessing over Edward. That's just a really bad example for girls.

That sounds itneresting! A good friend of mine is in a musical theory class, i might look into buying that book for her.

Nolori 12-22-2009 07:14 PM

I third the Gaimen recommendation. Specifically Good Omens or Anansi Boys. Those were my favorites. American Gods is a close second though.

Congrats Reeny!

@Knerd: You are a brave woman to get through that book. I tried the first chapter and just could not do it. =[

As for my books for the new year I'm going to hopefully finish my giant Arthur C. Clarke book and then move on to my huge stack that is sitting on my desk glaring at me.

Also: I just got the first book in The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo book from a friend for Christmas. She really likes it, but the plot she gave me seems so woefully under-developed that I can't help but be worried. But I can't be sure if that was just her summary of it or whether the book is really like that. I haven't looked it up yet, though. So I guess I should.
Has anyone else read/heard of the book? Did you like it?

Flink 12-22-2009 10:29 PM

Knerd, you could maybe link to everyone's list so they can find it? I meant from the front page and whatnot.

On Twilight, nice to see someone else shares my opinion on it.

I've been meaning to join this challenge. <3 I will one day.

KatMagenta 12-22-2009 10:33 PM

Nolori: I love the Millennium trilogy but I fail at descriptions so I probably wouldn't be able to add anything. Usually when I finish a book even if I really like it I wait forever before buying the next one in the series but with these I couldn't wait for the translations to be released.

If it does turn out to be "woefully under-developed" then I expect my brain is too. XD

Spring`Tyme Fresh 12-22-2009 11:59 PM

I failed miserably at my list. I'm going to start again on New Year's day, though. I read a lot for the first few months of the year, got a job and had no spare time to read- at least, I didn't make any - but since I've started uni I've gotten through about 5 books.

I need to buy some more books, actually. :)

Nolori 12-23-2009 12:31 AM

@KatMagenta: Is that what the series is called? It doesn't say anywhere on the book. Huh. Was it in Swedish originally? (Can you tell I never actually looked it up? I am apparently made of lazy!)
Also, glad to hear you got home okay! I hope the train ride wasn't too bad.
