HappyStarr, I *so* sympathise with you. I can't go to downtown Los Angeles without getting hopelessly lost at LEAST twice. Several times trying to head back home I've been unpleasantly surprised to find myself having gone a few miles in the wrong direction, towards The Bad Part of Town.

HappyStarr 07-01-2010 04:55 AM

yaa....I really dislike going in that area. Traffic is horrible and the roads are confusing. I haven't even heard many people say they enjoy living there. XD It's a total mess, and it's entirely their fault for not allowing any sort of expansion. So now we're stuck with somewhere around a million people in this one little area...T_T

RisikaFox 07-01-2010 08:31 AM

@Guivre: A Lion Among Men is actually the third installment in the Wicked series. I mean, I haven't read it yet, but I'm not sure how well it would read as a standalone volume.

@Iltu: Hmmm, I had no trouble reading it. xD But I'm reading all three in a row, which makes it a little easier. The problem, or not- depending on your perspective- with Maguire's books(or at least the Wicked series), is that they're so complex. Some of the stuff in Wicked only really made sense now, reading it for the second time.

And as for traveling in the city, I use the subway system, and print maps out from Google before I go. I don't get too lost that way.

HappyStarr 07-01-2010 09:33 AM

Well, I can use the Subway for going to into D.C. But this is the tightly knit county city. I tried using printed directions, but they always give the "take a left" where no lefts are permitted. T_T Never in my life do I intend on driving into D.C., though. Not unless it's an emergency.

Thanks so much, Knerd! *gets to fixin' up her list so she can post it*

Riskia- I started reading it right after I read Wicked, which I enjoyed, but I just didn't get into Son of a Witch. :/ I read the first chapter or two and just wasn't drawn in at all- I don't even remotely recall what happened! I do intend to reread Wicked in the next few years though, and see what more I can get out of it. It's the kind of book that needs to be read a few times to really pick up on everything. I plan to give Son of a Witch a chance after I get around to Wicked again. I usually go by the 'if I don't like the book, the book/author does not get another chance!' rule because there's so much to read out there, but some authors and books get exceptions.

TaiyoTsuki 07-01-2010 07:05 PM

hah hah, I know what you mean XD I don't take out that many books now, but a few years ago, I took out about 40 manga at once because they all came at the same time XD and a few hard covers on the side because they were so good that I didn't want to leave them there v.v that was the week that I read about 7-8 manga per day on a school day and 10-12 on a saturday or sunday XD I more or less dropped everything to read them all XD

siaasgn 07-03-2010 06:16 PM

Just added another book to my list - For The Win - it's Cory Doctorow's newest YA/ teen novel and it was really good! (Although not as good or at least it didn't hit as close to home for me as Litte Brother did)

I downloaded it as a PDF and read it on my downtime at work (of which there is very little anymore  )

Anyone else read this?

Guivre 07-03-2010 08:00 PM

Not I, Siaasgn. D= I should just quote myself saying that. ._. So many book choices out there, never enough time to see everything.

I just started reading Truth by Peter Temple. It's a gritty mystery set in Australia (naturally) that is winning awards and getting rave reviews. It supposedly has a big twist toward the end, so I thought I should read it before I see a spoiler somewhere. (I promise I won't spoil it, either!) I'm about 100 pages into it, and it's very good so far. A very efficient writing style, no chaff to be seen anywhere. Which is very much appreciated as, though I like mysteries well enough it's not my fave genre.

scholar 07-04-2010 03:10 AM

Have updated my list with stuff I've read -- I'm adding articles and bits of books, because those are, after all, pages, right?

Also added page counts for some of the books, and better bibliographical information. I'm cheating just a bit with page counts, including all the way to the index as part of the page numbering, but I do often look through indices, and almost always read carefully through bibliographies. So it's not really cheating.

Iltu 07-04-2010 03:19 AM

Finally read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! ...And was kind of disappointed. I thought I'd like it way more than I did... I do love Carroll's writing style though, it's among my favorites.
Not adding that book to my list yet, though. It's in a big complete works of Lewis Carroll omnibus, so I figure I'll read the whole thing and count it as one book.

Thanks Roxxxy... you too!

@Sesshys: I sort of knew Cassandra Clare when she was in the HP fandom so many years ago -- have you read her Harry Potter fanfic? I believe it's under the name Cassandra Claire, a slightly changed spelling. Actually, I just googled to find out, and she's taken it all down, probably after the whole plagiarism wank. (I have no opinion on it, but it's clear she was heavily influenced by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other popular TV/fiction at the time.) Pity, because a lot of it was totally hilarious. I haven't read her printed books, though I did like her writing style in fanfic.

SesshysMiko 07-04-2010 10:17 PM

@anime: I had never even heard of her until I randomly picked up City of Bones at the bookstore. It would have been nice to read her Harry Potter fanfic, but oh well! She has a really great sense of humor and shows it a lot in the Mortal Instruments :P

scholar 07-04-2010 11:39 PM

Actually if you poke around a bit you can find someone who's archived the PDFs. I won't link it here as I don't think it's entirely okay, but you can find it through Google. It's called "The Draco Trilogy" by Cassandra Claire.

SesshysMiko 07-05-2010 12:48 AM

Arighty, thanks very much I will! ^_^

LOL I wanted to. I read the first one....and then my mom could find all of her books EXCEPT the second. So I was like ".............well, then....I guess I'll just have to wait. Oh. Darn." I don't think my mom's kept up, either. There were just too many. I seriously want to get back to reading those, though. First one was pretty good. >.>
