Heh, I just picked up The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in the library because I had no clue where to start. I like the Granada series with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes for classic Holmes-ness.

It is nice to see such well read Menewshans... I am something of a bibliophile myself... I recently exhausted the Menewshan Library's stock. Read every book there... Thankfully I have found a library on a nearby island that has many books I have not even heard of - books from the mainland, mostly. Truthfully, the selection is a bit daunting, and I do not know where to start... Perhaps a few Menewshans would be so kind as to suggest a few books to me?

@Lise: Well, I suppose it really depends on your reading preferences. ^^ But I'd highly recommend Madeline L'Engle's Time series, as well as the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey for starters. Also, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and pretty much anything by Edgar Allan Poe. ^^ |
@Risi: Thanks! :D @Lise: Like RisikaFox said, it really depends on what your preference is (though not exclusively so). But what about the Morganville Vampires series? They're rather interesting, at least. There's even a ghost - (spoiler here) SPOILERFire Opal by Regina McBride is really quite interesting - it's set in Ireland during, I believe, the Revolutionary War; and it involves a baby sister who returned from the dead within to be birthed once again - and a legend about a land where a goddess exiled herself ... The Tide Knot by Helen Dunmore is imaginative - the main characters are a Merman from Ingo, a girl whose Mer self and Human self are equally balanced, the girl's brother who is more Human than Mer, a new baby brother, and the siblings' missing father who may not be so missing after all... And what about Star Trek books?? Star Trek's AWESOME. Especially the Star Trek: The Next Generation book "Planet X" which is a crossover with the X-Men - and features a planet with a blooming mutant population!! Also, the Star Trek: The Original Series book "How Much For Just The Planet?" is very creative, not to mention amusing and adventurous on a planet where everything is completely topsy-turvy even when the Enterprise and a Klingon cruiser clash. It's a place where you bargain to pay more, as well as other strange occurances... (spoiler here) SPOILERThen there are the Star Trek: The Original Series books "Dreadnaught" and "Battlestations!" which are awesome - there are a few books inbetween the two, but if I recall correctly, "Battlestations!" is pretty much a sequel to "Dreadnaught". There may be something amiss within the Federation, unwittingly involving a female Starfleet officer and her Vulcan friend whom she still wants to forgive her... Also, the Star Trek: The Next Generation book "Masks" by John Vornholt is pretty cool. In a world where you are considered naked without your mask on, but if someone likes your mask they can challenge you for it, how will the Enterprise crew fare with their highly unusual masks as they race to find the most prized mask of all - BEFORE the Ferengi get it? And what happens when there is a traitor in their group who wants the mask for themself? Or when Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, falls in love with a woman on the planet? If you like romance books, Grace Livingston Hill wrote quality (not to mention clean) romance stories. (Three story descriptions, no spoiler) SPOILER |

I'm not great with recommendations. My default recommendation is Neil Gaiman because I think whether you want fantasy/horror/romance/just really good stories you should get something out of his books. |

@Car'a'Carn- I've never read that, but I recognize the Author's name. I have a lot of favorites, but The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks was what got me into reading in the first place and has wowed me ever since. I'm rereading the series, starting with The Sword of Shannara, which I haven't read since 6th grade x33 @RisikaFox- Read through the whole text book o.o @KatMagenta- I did it for the same reason xD There are so many of them and each collection of the stories start with something different o.0 Good luck Zilithandria! And I saw a Maximum Ride book in there x3 Those books are great @Lise- I don't know what types of books you normally read but Brent Weeks writes good books, and he's a relatively new author. I would suggest Neil Gaiman but Kat beat me to it xDD |

Lise- As others have said, Edgar Allen Poe is amazing (my favorite story of his is The Cask of Amontillado), Neil Gaiman is great, but the only thing I've read of his is The Graveyard Book, which is based off The Jungle Books, but set (of course) in a graveyard, Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy is absolutely to die for!!! That particular trilogy is among my favorites of all time. I have a lot of favorites, myself, but if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with The Once and Future King by T.H. White. I don't recommend that book to a lot of people, because it's a heavy read, but I think you'd enjoy it, as avid of a reader as you are! What sort of books do you like? Maybe I can recommend a few that are to your tastes, instead of mine. ;) Kat- Congrats on fifty! WOW. I've not been motivated to read at all lately because I knew I had A Farewell To Arms was waiting for me and I had no desire to read it... Finally finished it yesterday, and then read 200 pages to finish another book, and spent several hours reading The Lord of the Rings today. Amazing what having to read a bad book can do to your will to read, and how quickly that will comes back once it's done! :lol: |

It's about an American man, Lieutenant Frederic Henry, and he's an ambulance driver for the Italian army during World War I. He falls for an English nurse named Catherine Barkley, and the book is about the war and their relationship. (And drinking a lot. It is also about drinking a lot. :XD) A very good basic storyline, but I'm just not one for Hemingway's writing style, or his characters, or, um... anything, really. Out of the three books I've read by him, this was the only one even I thought had an interesting plot, and that plot wasn't carried out in a way that interested me. I have tons of respect for him as a writer, of course, but his books just don't appeal to me in the slightest.
His short stories about a boy named Nick are pretty interesting, though. :) |

Well, it certainly would have been a very different story if the main character had been with the American army!

@Beliar - Hey! I know that series! That was the one my brother read all of. I tried getting into the first book when I was younger (before Piers Anthony) But I was a terribly weak reader so I didn't really get into it. Sadly I just remembered that I gave all those to the library many years ago (stupidly) >.<! I really should give them another try. I've only ever heard good things about them. Well... Off to the library to find them then!

I've only read the first three books in that series, but I wanna read the newer ones at some point. I don't think I'm gonna make a hundred books this year. :( I'm only at book thirty nine! My page count is doing okay, though. I've got 54 books read if I count by that.

Rereading it. Because of college classes, I'm taking forever to get it finished. Normally I'd have it done in no time flat.
