@Car'a'carn- Considering how complicated the series gets I don't blame you! Actually I'm planning on reading Mistborn,by the guy whose taken over writing the last few books of the series.

I can't wait to get the books I just ordered trough the library! They look so good

Congratulations on finishing your first book. It is unfortunate your follow up book is proving to be boring thus far. Hopefully it picks up and begins to get more interesting.

That is fair enough, the book I did a review for was quite brief. It might prove worthwhile to provide updates on the current book. I somewhat regret not doing that for the current book I am reading. As chapter by chapter I have been having a variety of emotional reactions to it. Although I am lazy, so this would suit me.

Thanks! As for the most recent one, it's not really picked up, and is such a drag to read. I wish it wasn't required!

Updates are a fantastic idea! I always mean to write down how I'm feeling about books I'm reading, but I never do... Usually because I'm too caught up in the book to want to stop if there's something I feel is worth writing down my reaction to.
What book is it that you are currently reading?

Car- Oh! My mom just got done with The Hunger Games and said it's really good. She hardly ever goes out for young adult books. I've been wanting to read the series for some time now, but now especially since she liked it so much!
Are you enjoying it so far?

Papillon- What books did you order?

PapillonCameo 01-10-2011 08:58 PM

@Iltu-Pegasus , The hero and the crown, which are both by Robin McKinley. Then I ordered Daughter of the Forest and Daughter of Blood. I'm not sure if I'll like the last two since they're by people I've never read, but the beauty of getting books trough the library is that you can return them if you don't like them.

Speaking of books I need to add one to my list. Yay! Second book :D

RisikaFox 01-10-2011 09:59 PM

I just finished reading The Shapeshifters: The Kiesha’ra of the Den of Shadows by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. O.O It was sooo good. I thought her other books were good, but this series was fabulous.

Not only did this story manage to make me cry within the first chapter, as well as laugh out loud on numerous occasions, but it kept me guessing what would come next the entire time. I nearly had to lock it up during work hours, because I kept fishing it out of my desk drawer to sneak a few paragraphs when nobody was looking, haha.

Next on my list: Fallen by Lauren Kate

PapillonCameo 01-10-2011 10:01 PM

Wow,must be some good book to make you cry! I'll have to see if I can get my hands on it.

RisikaFox 01-10-2011 11:09 PM

It really is. Although I'm easily moved, so it could just be me, haha.

PapillonCameo 01-11-2011 01:28 AM

O I don't know..I've already cried when reading this romance book once. The ending was so bittersweet I couldn't help it!

Car'a'Carn 01-11-2011 07:10 PM

Papillon - Mistborn? What is this? *has not heard of it before* I will have to look those up
Those Pegasus books look pretty good too :P

Iltu - Yes I am! It was a little depressing in the beginning but after a few chapters it begins to get harder and harder to put down cause you have to know what's gonna happen to the characters. I hit Chapter 12 and am now waiting for my sisters to catch up to me.

Papillon- What books did you order?

That makes it all the worse that it is required reading. I can't really remember having required reading which I disliked. I am currently reading Cultural Anthropology: A Contemporary Perspective. It has been an interesting read to say the least. I am currently up to the last section which is a part of anthropology which I am more familiar with. So the rest of the book should be much easier reading hereon in. Adding to that I am on page 469 out of 545.

Iltu 01-11-2011 09:59 PM

Crimson- I never had very many that didn't strike my fancy. The Sun Also Rises, The Old Man and the Sea, The Stranger, A Farewell to Arms, A World Lit Only By Fire, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Awakening and Hardball have been the only ones I've not liked. But in four years of high school, I don't think that's so bad. :)
Oh, cool! That sounds really interesting, I don't get around to much nonfiction myself. What sort of things does the book cover, exactly?

Crimson Fang 01-11-2011 10:25 PM

@Iltu-
I was fairly lucky at both high school and during my failed attempt at university. Required readings were, to the limits of my memory, quite enjoyable. At times they were challenging, but enjoyable all the same. Although when you initially find someone's work difficult to follow it is pretty awesome when you begin to grasp what they are saying. As for novels and works more commonly associated with reading, I must admit I am painfully ignorant. My highly limited knowledge of books does not extend very far at all beyond sociocultural anthropology. Even then I am aware of but a tiny fraction of that area.

The book I am reading is really interesting. It is basically presenting an overview of cultural anthropology as it stood in 1976. Which is unsurprising as it was published back then. As such it covers topics such as Prehistory , kinship systems, religion and how culture is structured and changes. The chapter I just recently finished was looking at the various impacts colonial contact had on 'small scale societies'.

PapillonCameo 01-11-2011 11:36 PM

Car'a'carn-I'm really looking forward to reading it.The only reason I found this book is because of something I typed in to google, just looking for lists of what people consider good fantasy books.I'm looking for new authors, because I'm getting tired of always hearing about the same ones.

Why has there been such an increase in first person perspective within books!I find this very frustrating as ,personally I prefer things written in third person ,I can come up with my own opinions about characters instead of being biased by what one character's viewpoint.

TaiyoTsuki 01-12-2011 08:18 PM

I have officially started on the last of the Lord of the Rings trilogy! :boogie: Course, that means that I'll just dive back into the Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind.

PapillonCameo 01-12-2011 08:58 PM

Have you read The Hobbit yet? On another note I haven't read the Sword of Truth series ,but I've heard of it.I read a lot of young adult fiction...Lately I've been trying to branch out ,but old habits are hard to break!

TaiyoTsuki 01-12-2011 09:46 PM

I read The Hobbit before I started reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And trust me, Sword of Truth are some really good books.

PapillonCameo 01-12-2011 09:48 PM

Currently I'm reading Memory&Dream by Charles De Lint and Ordeal by Innocence written by Agatha Christie. I'll have to wait a while before starting another series ,because I just ordered quite a few books in the library that I'm looking forward to reading.I'll give the series a try after I get trough those.I have one of the books at home..If I can find it.

TaiyoTsuki 01-12-2011 09:51 PM

Which book? Start out with Wizard's First Rule if you're going to read Sword of Truth. It's the first book in the series. And my dad likes Charles De Lint, though I've never read any of his books.

PapillonCameo 01-12-2011 09:53 PM

The Song of Shannara I think. I decided to give Charles De Lint a try because I've heard or read a bit about him. Thanks for the info about which book starts of the series. That's always one of the things I have a hard time finding!

TaiyoTsuki 01-12-2011 10:03 PM

I've heard of that book, but never read it.

Have you read them before? Also how are you finding them compared to the films? I was somewhat disappointed by the film adaptations. Especially of Return of the King.

PapillonCameo 01-12-2011 10:18 PM

I read the Lord of The Rings books after the movie..And thought that considering the sheer amount of information there is in the books they did the best they could in the movie adaptations.I do wish they had found some way to incorporate the wonderful songs that where in the books, especially the ones sung by the elves.

Crimson Fang 01-12-2011 10:30 PM

I don't think they were necesarily bad movies per se. I can also fully concede that my reaction to them is very much subjective. I did feel however that they overplayed the action in the books. So I was a bit annoyed with all the emphasis on the battles. Possibly a more trivial grievance, but Saruman was my favourite character. So when they butchered his death I was all, oh no I ain't having this. Although being a New Zealander I also come at this movie critically from another perspective. In many ways it also symbolizes Peter Jackson as a director selling out to the Hollywood narrative.

TaiyoTsuki 01-12-2011 10:36 PM

@ Crimson: That's always how it goes with movie adaptations of books. Though I am liking the books.

@ Papillion: That's what I'm doing--reading the books after I've seen the movies.

PapillonCameo 01-12-2011 10:54 PM

@Crimson-It always is hard to see a book you love turned into a movie that doesn't quite do it justice.Even worse is when the author is swayed by the movies when it comes to writing the rest of the series! It's one of the reasons I'm kind of glad some of the books I adore will never be turned into movies. One adaptation from book to movie that was marvelously done is The Last Unicorn by Peter S.Beagle largely because the author is the one who wrote the screen play.

@Tayio-I did that with Quest for Camelot too..You wouldn't believe how different the book is from the movie, the same goes for Stardust by Neil Gaimen.I'm actually not quite sure about the spelling of his last name..

Yeah that is true. I am also being harsher to him as while I added it as an after thought, him, Peter Jackson, being a New Zealand director changes things a lot. Glad to hear you are enjoying the books though. I also found them to be quite entertaining.

@PapillonCameo-
Oh that would annoy me a lot if that happened. I don't think I have ever been reading a series which was still being published while movies were coming out. LOTR also got dealt another blow as I happened to be studying New Zealand film at the time. So was exploring issues of our film culture and whether or not directors should sell out.
