I have ten books so far, pretty good for a month but I need to read faster!

@Crimson-Hey it'll probably help you improve your reading level.I only read fast because I've been reading avidly since I was in third grade, and have always read books above the usual age level for my age.

My problem lies not so much in my reading level, but rather my grasp over the material. Some of the books I am wanting to read can be quite dense and heavy. This is especially the case when they are further hindered by being translated from other languages. A good example is one I mentioned in my previous post Homo Hierarchicus which is translated from Indian. To demonstrate I will quote the start of the introduction.

Quote:
The caste system is so different from our own social system in its central ideology that the modern reader is doubtless rarely inclined to study it fully. If he is very ignorant of sociology, or of a very militant turn of mind, his interest may be confined to wanting the destruction or disappearance of an institution which is a denial of the rights of man, and appears as an obstacle to the economic progress of 500 million people. It is a remarkable fact that, quite apart from the Indians, no Westerner who has lived in India, whether the most fervent reformer or the most zealous missionary, has ever, as far as is known, attempted or recommended the abolition pure and simple of the caste system, either because of an acute consciousness of the positive functions fulfilled by the system, as in the case of Abe Dubois, or simply because such a thing appeared too impractible.
Although totally agree that one of the bonuses in pushing ahead is that I further sharpen my tools as a result! There is a certain fix which can come from struggling to understand material then through your struggles beginning to grasp some meaning!

I'll let you know what I think of it, then! I read an excerpt and didn't like it, but I'm enjoying the actual full book. ...I'm on page two, but so far, so good! That sounds interesting. What does it mean by and 'image' of Africa? I imagine it's related to anthropology!

Ooo, do you still read psychology books? I have a few which I am hoping to get through this year. Quite old ones though. :o

The book, to the best of my understanding, is looking at the ways in which Heart of Darkness conceptualizes Africa. On a more wider level the book forms part of the decolonization movement which aims to empower Indigenous and marginalized peoples to construct and regain autonomy over their own cultures, histories, knowledge and narratives.

Heh, I love getting Amazon invoices for £0.00 when I download ebooks for my phone through the Kindle store. My local library doesn't have a copy of Frankenstein. :/

I concur. Although it makes me wonder what kind of library wouldn't own a copy of Frankenstein. O.o

So! I just finished The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine. I really enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the other books of hers I've read(Fairest, Ella Enchanted). This one's probably going to be recycled when I get around to visiting one of the local used bookstores.

And now I'm reading... Wizards. It's a collection of short stories about wizards from "the masters of modern fantasy". However, I've only heard of three of them, and only only read works by two. xD

According to the library catalogue there are at least 35 copies of the book in the city (some are listed under slightly different titles) but none in the particular library that I go to. I would begrudge paying to have one of them sent from another branch when in this case I knew the ebook would be free and cheap second hand copies probably wouldn't be too hard to find.

Here's hoping the mystery authors are enjoyable. ^^

I've also been meaning to read Wizards but just haven't gotten around to it because there are so many good books to read still. I've been reading for 20 years now and I still have books that I want to read that were written before I was born, not to mention the books since birth.

@Kat: You have to pay to have books transferred? My library can get books from libraries on the other side of the state for free. O.O But that might just be because it's part of an association.

And yes, I hope they're enjoyable as well. I've only had time to read the first story, which was by Neil Gaiman. It was a cute story, and very enjoyable. I'm reading Garth Nix's entry at the moment. ^^

@Iltu: No problem. I actually just picked it up on a whim. Barnes & Noble had it in their bargain section for $5. An interesting five-dollar hardcover is hard to come by. xD

@Crimson-I've been planning on re-reading Bl!nk and reading Th!nk,which is the counter argument to Blink written by someone who is not the author of the first one.lol \

@Risika-I love and own The Two Princesses of Bamarre! And if you like fantasy anthologies you might like "Powers of Detection:Stories of Mystery and Fantasy" It mixes my two of my favorite genres,it was edited by Dana Stabenow and includes stories by Charlain Harris,Anne Perry as well as a few others.

Ah right, you were the one who mentioned those books to me. I noticed Bl!nk in the bookstore where I work a few days after you mentioned it. It did look interesting, although I have many books to get through. The two psychology books I am going to read through are cultural psychology books. Is that not a huge shocker that someone interested primarily in anthropology, when reading a psychology book, wishes to read cultural psychology. Oh and I might also read at some stage Healing makes our Hearts happy written by an anthropologist who also has some training in psychology. xD

In my hometown it's free to get a book transferred but here it's listed as a charge on the fees list. I keep meaning to ask if they can clarify whether it only refers to libraries outwith the council ran ones or any library at all but I'm usually half way home before I remember.

Also in writing this post I discovered outwith is a chiefly Scottish word (couldn't remember if it was just one word or hyphenated). Learn something new every day...

If you know Achebe, is it safe to assume that you know about Things Fall Apart? That novel was written in direct response to Heart of Darkness. It was Achebe's version of events, creating a distinctly African novel about colonization in opposition to Conrad's European novel. If you get the opportunity, you really need to put them side-by-side and do a comparison.

It's about these two people who hunt down angels because they are evil unlike how most angels are dipicted. These particular angels feed off human life energy. It's really good though.

What's yours about?

In honesty, I have only recently stumbled across Achebe. As such I have not read any of his work yet. I just happened to notice his book at the bookstore (An Image of Africa). Although thank you so much for that information! I should definitely look towards including both of those books in my challenge this year. On that note I finished another book. :P
