Finally finished Wizards! I liked all of the stories so much, but I finally picked a favorite. It's the very last one in the book, 'Stonefather' by Orson Scott Card. I liked it best because it was about my favorite kind of magic, the manipulation of power found in nature. ^^

Car'a'Carn 03-01-2011 06:29 AM

Is this the book you are speaking of?

Amazon.com: Wizards: Magical Tales from the Masters of Modern Fantasy (9780441015887): Jack Dann, Gardner Dozois: Books

AishaLeigh 03-01-2011 07:29 AM

seems i've been reading some of orson scott card's books but the ones i've read are dealing with Ender and one i happened to pick up was called the treasure box which was interesting also. my roommate suggested reading ender's game and i've been hooked ever since. really good reading if you're into sci fi stuff.

MedievalBeauty 03-01-2011 08:45 AM

I'm finding it really hard to find the time to read these days especially with college and all that. But, I have read a few chapters today. Not too bad so far.

RisikaFox 03-01-2011 09:13 AM

@Car'a'Carn: Yes, that it is. ^^ I wasn't sure how to write out the full title, since it's not spelled out so cleanly on the cover. xD

@Aisha: I'm more of a fantasy girl, although I do enjoy some sci-fi. If I find myself with time/money to go looking for books though, I'll see if I can find any of those.

PapillonCameo 03-01-2011 02:24 PM

@Aisha-I just happen to be reading Speaker For the Dead, have you read that one yet? And since you like sci fi,have you read anything by Anne McAffrey or Marion Zimmer Bradley?

@Risika-I love fantasy! It has to be one of my favorite genres. What books have you read?

Car'a'Carn 03-01-2011 07:19 PM

AishaLeigh - Oh I love sci fi stuff! I'll just add that one to my list then :)

Risika - Ah no prob. It took me a minute to figure out it was collection of books  But it finally clicked! *is a little slow*... :stare:

Papillon - *pokes Papillon* Hows getting rid of that awful song going?

Holy cow! I'm actually 38% done with my book challenge! :P

PapillonCameo 03-01-2011 07:39 PM

Carn-Well I've been listening to a whole bunch of other stuff,so well! *pokes back*

RisikaFox 03-01-2011 09:01 PM

@Papillon: I've read all sorts, too many to remember, haha. But I really like all of Tamora Pierce's work, and I enjoyed the Dragonriders of Pern, although I've yet to read them all. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are also at the top of my list. ^^ Oh! I also really like Brian Jaques' Redwall series. And A Wrinkle in Time. And Howl's Moving Castle... *rambles on*

@Car'a'Carn: Actually, a collection of short stories, but yes. ^^ The title is quite a mouthful though. xD

PapillonCameo 03-01-2011 09:45 PM

@Risika-I've read all of those!I love Tamora Pierce, she's one of my favorite authors. So is Diana Wynne Jones.Have you read the Nine Lives of Christopher Chant and Witch Week,or maybe The Magicians of Caprona? All of them are by the author of Howl's Moving Castle, which I like a lot.

Car'a'Carn 03-02-2011 01:01 AM

Riska - Ah ok! Yes I was a little daunted by the length of the title lol :XD
Oh wow! I've read a lot of those though I never did finish the redwall series or the dragonriders either though they've been on my shelf since I was like 13. Holy crap.... That was 11 years ago :gonk:

Papillon - I'm half tempted to post it again! :XD but I won't.
You know I've seen Howl's Moving Castle (loved it) But I didn't know there was a book of it too! Is it good?

PapillonCameo 03-02-2011 01:13 AM

@Carn-Different from the movie, but I read it before I ever saw the movie...It's really good! I wanna re-read it!!!lol It's one of those movies adaptations that was very well done, because it's similar and completely different from the book in a good way. Like..Howl comes to this world, and yeah...lol READ IT!!! I'm not giving away spoilers!

Knerd 03-02-2011 01:21 AM

That movie is one of my favorites, so I'll always hold that vision in my mind when I think of the story. But the book is a great read for younger kids. It's got such a touching story and some of the best YA characters I've ever encountered. Read it if you guys have the chance!

PapillonCameo 03-02-2011 01:23 AM

Knerd-Have you read any of Wynne's other books? And have you read The Last Unicorn?

Did anyone else know that Quest for Camelot is based on a book! I finally managed to read it last year, and it was completely different !!1

Iltu 03-02-2011 02:42 AM

Papillon- OH MY GOD
I know, I read the synopsis of the book Quest for Camelot once (only isn't it called The King's Damosel or soemthing?) and it was CRAZY different from the movie. Way darker!!! I want to read it, but I can never find it anywhere.

Car- Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite books of all time! You definitely ought to read it. I actually did because I wanted to read it before I saw the movie. And ever since I've refused to watch the movie because from that I've seen it's really different and I think I'd feel hugely let down.

Knerd 03-02-2011 03:05 AM

I read the first volume of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci (wasn't too impressed) and I could have sworn that I read another one of her books, but the name is escaping me at the moment.

RisikaFox 03-02-2011 09:04 AM

@Papillon: Um... I read the first collective volume of The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, but I'm not sure which stories were included, I'd have to go find it... I also read her book, The Game. I only bought it because of the name, but it was good. ^^

O.O Is there really a Quest for Camelot book? That's one of my favorite animated movies. =D Who wrote it?

@Car'a'carn: Haha, yeah... I did read most of Redwall, but I think I missed the last couple. Is he still writing those books? xD

Eastriel 03-02-2011 01:53 PM

Haha on to my 10th book....such poor progress from me, maybe i'll make up for it in summer? xD

As for the redwall series, I'm currently collecting them, I think I have about 13 of them so far and i've read the first two, but i'm not going to be reading anymore until I have the whole set, then i'm going to read them all in a row because I think that way I can fully appreciate the series.

Has anyone here read 'the homeward bounders'? By Dianne Wynne-Jones? If not i'd really recommend it, technically it's a kids book, but it can be appreicated by adults and I think has some quite complex features in it that can be appreciated by an older reader. ^^

PapillonCameo 03-02-2011 02:12 PM

@Iltu-It's nearly impossible to find.I had to order it from out of province (I live in Canada) ,trough the library and it took a while for it to get here. IT is completely different, and darker, but still good. With a bitter sweet ending.

It is called The King's Damosel by Vera Chapman

Knerd and Risika-I read it when I was younger, the age of the intended audience, and I loved it! I keep re-reading that series over and over! Plus I have a few other of her books too,but not the homeward bounders..Dogsbody was good. A very interesting concept actually.

EAstriel-I read the books that they turned into the kid's show, and realized that they did an awesome job with it. Got caught up in the books, now I want to go and get some in the library!

Eastriel 03-02-2011 05:09 PM

I never saw the tv series!

KatMagenta 03-02-2011 05:30 PM

I read a fair few Diana Wynne Jones books when I was younger but I can't remember them very well now. A friend borrowed my copy of Howl's Moving Castle a couple of years ago and I sort of had to nod and mumble while she was trying to talk to me about it. -_-

Frankenstein has been interesting so far. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting it's been different to what I'd thought.

PapillonCameo 03-02-2011 05:48 PM

O well.I'm so desperate I'm reading a Star Trek book now...About the youth of Captain James T.Kirk. >.< My dad has a whole bunch lying around.

TaiyoTsuki 03-03-2011 03:21 AM

Another book down, which brings my count up to 33. I've officially lost Return of the King. NOOOOOOO!!!!

AishaLeigh 03-03-2011 07:48 PM

@PapillonCameo: yep i just read that one. it helps that one of my roommates is re reading the series so he gets it first then whenever i get around to it i read it before we take it back to the library.

@RisikaFox: it really depends on which scifi and fantasy i want to read. i really am enjoying the ender series and i love jim butcher's dresden file's series. i'm getting a bit excited for his next book to come out which should be sometime in june.

as for the lord of the rings trilogy i did read it but it took me a long time to get through it that i really don't want to re read it again. might see if the library has howl's moving castle.

Alright! Since you, Knerd, and Iltu have such a high opinion of it then I will read it!

Riska - I don't know. The last book of his that I got was The Legend of Luke but beyond that I'm not sure what else there is.

Eastriel - I've not heard of that series. But I will take a look and maybe put them on my reading list!

Papillon - Not your style of book?

Taiyo - That's horrible! I lent out my copy of the hobbit to one of my sibs years ago and I haven't seen it since :( The sad thing is they live nearby :XD
