@Lavinia:

Hi! :)

Relationships come and go, but books are really important. Saaaaave the booook!

Meanwhile: Nicholas Sparks. Hey! Should I read him?

Lavinia 05-09-2011 07:07 AM

xD Wise words Colors, wiiiise words!

And I like Sparks. They're extremely quick reads. I can finish them the same day most of the time. I usually read them in the MIDDLE of reading a longer book, actually. I think i read about 3 sparks books while i read Magician the first time ahaha.

I like his style though, if im in the mood for a quick love story/romance. He writes love from both genders and all ages perfectly. I mean, if you've seen dear john or the notebook im sure you'll understand. Even reading them makes me cry, and not many authors quite manage that D=

But maybe i'm just over sensitive :ninja:

Knerd 05-09-2011 11:02 AM

Added you to thr front page. Welcome aboard! :)

MedievalBeauty 05-09-2011 11:20 AM

I've finished reading rosebush by michele jaffe. It's great book I must, really good read. Very thrilling indeed.

Lavinia 05-09-2011 11:54 AM

Thankya muchly Knerd! =3

Is it a thriller novel Medieval??

KatMagenta 05-09-2011 05:56 PM

Colors: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is the only book from those lists I've heard of but I haven't actually read it. I'd be interested in it because of the science content but I don't know if that would appeal to others.

My exams are over! I'm going aim to spend as much time either reading or sleeping as possible.

Huh well I've never heard that rumor about the kindle before but yeah that's a little silly. Maybe it was for the older kindles before they came out with the 3G models? *shrugs* But anywho, Those sonys look nice too! I was thinking about them before I got my kindle.

@Car'a'Carn -- I know of Max Berry from Jennifer Government. I also want an e-reader -- I don't have much space in my apartment, and would like things to look as not-officey as possible. They also just look fun. So outside of my old books, or the ones that come in my favorite paperback size, I really don't see a problem with collecting books that way.

Ah ok! Thanks! I'll give'em a look up. They are fun! I like the skins you can get for the kindle. And they probably have some neat ones for the other readers too.

He's a very funny Australian man. Of his works, I have read Syrup, Jennifer Government and Company... which is all of the books currently published, actually, I just went to check. :P He's got a new book, Machine Man, about to come out. He's also got an adorable daughter about whom he writes on his blog frequently. Here's a bit he wrote about her teddy bears, which made me laugh considerably.

Hah! That teddy bear bit was hilarous! :XD I'll have to look up some of his books

Uh... Uh! UH!!! *looks back and forth between the mummy wrapping and the cheer outfit* FINE! :gonk: I'll be a cheerleader :( Just no skirts!! :illgetu: *Whew! Narrowly avoids being wrapped up like a mummy* :stare:

LaVida 05-09-2011 11:35 PM

*pops in*

heya...yea..still on my partial hiatus...dunno when I'm gonna be gone again....most likely sometime next week XP (3 5-page single-spaced papers due (within May), 2 culminating presentations, 2 culminating projects, a plethora of labs, 4 exams, and counting >.>)

ANYWAYS, the school's gonna let me buy manga for them!!!! <3 Suggestions guys? ($200 budget @[email protected] - hoping to buy 100 manga at AN.....hopefully :3) and a short series one would be nice (something less than 30 volumes? :) )

colorsbold 05-10-2011 12:20 AM

@LaVida: Maybe DeathNote?

Car'a'Carn 05-10-2011 04:06 AM

LaVida - HOLY CRAP! What are you going to school for?!? :gonk: I'd just die if I had that much to do :(

I haven't read as much manga as some people in here but two that come to mind that I really love are Yokohama Kaidashi Kik and Girl Friends. Yokohama shopping log (sci-fi) is 14 volumes I think and girl friends (yuri romance) is 4. So there's my two cents! or mangas rather ^^!

Oh! Just read what Colorsbold put down and while I've not read the whole thing, DeathNote is really good too!

Melissa 05-10-2011 05:04 AM

Hey Guys! I haven't been here in a while. /hangs head sheepishly

well 2011 has been rough. I can't seem to finish any of the books I've started. I've got probably 8 books almost finished. I just keep getting frustrated with they way they are turning out. Here's what I have finished. XD

1. The Year of Secret Assignments - Jaclyn Moriarty
2. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - L. Frank Baum (graphic novel)
3. 13 Little Blue Envelopes - Maureen Johnson

I may have forgotten a few. I'm so lame.

I think it's because Kindles don't officially support the .epub filetype which is the industry standard. All the ebooks I have on my phone were free downloads but if I'd paid for .epub files from other websites then I'd be annoyed. It seems like there are ways of converting .epub into .mobi (the file type the Kindle .azw is based on) which should work. I think I might end up getting a Kindle anyway and splashing out a little extra for the 3G version because if I'm staying with my parents during the holidays they don't have wi-fi and truly open networks are few and far between.

Firstly I need to finish reading the books I have from the library before they start demanding money from me. XD

LaVida 05-10-2011 07:44 PM

colorsbold>> already have the full set ;3

Car'a'Carn>> hah hah, sorry, I don't think I'm allowed to buy yuri XD unless it's really really really light shojo ai :P cuz it's a high school (think under 17)

TaiyoTsuki 05-11-2011 01:15 AM

@ Carn: Darn! I thought I'd be able to do a mummy-wrapping too.....

`Kitami 05-11-2011 10:20 AM

Carnie:: HA!
Also, in middle school, we got our (male) principal to dress as a cheerleader (with a skirt and pompoms) because we read enough to beat our reading-point challenge. It was awesome!!

Lavinia 05-11-2011 10:21 AM

Anybody got any recommendations for Ancient Fiction?? (particularly Egyptians/Romans)

Car'a'Carn 05-11-2011 03:30 PM

Kat - Ah ok I gotcha! I'd forgotten about that! I did find however a hack to enable support on your kindle for it. Here's a bit about it I found on a kindle blog. And also I've found calibre - E-book management to be quite useful too. And it's free! Well... It was the last time I checked...

LaVida - Ah well if I think of any others I'll be sure to mention them!

Taiyo - Ah haha! ^^! Maybe next time...?

Kitami - That's hilarious! :XD What a cool principal!

*pokes Lavinia* Wasn't I just chatting with you and Woody and Linnea over in sprinkles?

colorsbold 05-11-2011 04:07 PM

.... Max Barry's Syrup is going to be made into a movie!! :squee:
I don't know if any of you guys know the book, but this is the most wonderful and ironical thing ever yesyesyes.

Car'a'Carn 05-11-2011 06:42 PM

 I don't but I'll go take a look at it!

`Kitami 05-12-2011 07:17 AM

I have been trying to get a hold of Syrup for like...years...without ordering it online (until recently it was impossible to shop online for me) but I have been unable to find it. ><

Carnie:: He was pretty cool when I went to school there, but when my brother went there, he was rather pathetic. My brother was bullied horribly and he would do nothing to help or make the situation better in any way. My parents took my brother out of school and my mom home-schooled him. It was that bad.

Car'a'Carn 05-14-2011 06:10 AM

Kitami - Yikes! K that's not cool  He just lost all his coolness for that :/ Why do people always look the other way with bullies?!? But that's cool your brother got to home school! I was home schooled too

Iltu 05-14-2011 07:03 PM

I just finished Catcher in the Rye! I didn't like it much, unfortunately. :gonk: Our teacher was going to have us read if for school, but she decided since we were done with the AP test she wouldn't make us. Of course, this was the day after she'd passed them out and I already had a bit read, so I went on with it.

And next week she's letting us spend every single day in her class reading any book we want. I have no idea what to read, since I lost the book I was reading. ;a; If I find it I'll read that. But I need a back-up incase I don't! Maybe The Silmarillion? Having five 45 minute periods of quiet to get started on that would be nice, I've heard it's not an easy read. </ramble>

I've not actually read beyond the first few pages, which I read in the bookstore to see if I'd like the books, but Lustrum by Robert Harris seems pretty good! It's about ancient Rome. Only when I looked it up to see who the author was just now, I found out it's the second book of a trilogy. That's news to me! Looks like the first book is called Imperium.

Knerd 05-14-2011 08:31 PM

Lavinia:

Have you heard of Mary Renault's The Persian Boy? It follows the story of Alexander the Great's slave and lover. Not quite Egyptian or Roman, but Macedonian is close enough, right?

LaVida 05-15-2011 02:43 AM

Kitami>> omg, that never happens at my school! XD

Lavinia>> well, Anatolia Story (Red River) is a good manga that focuses on Anatolia, but has Egyptian connections since there is the fact that an Anatolia descendent does later marry into the Egyptian Royal Family. Oh, but it's a manga that ranges 28 volumes.

Knerd>> omg, sounds like a good plot, can you expand a bit more on that? :d
