Editing a ping into an existing post doesn't work, though. So you might want to make a new post and ping Knerd in that and include a link to your list post. :)

Thanks for adding my list as well, Knerd.

I'm doing my best to get through Darkfever, but it's starting to get difficult... I think I'ma start a new book and just read Darkfever in small bursts. XD

That's what I decided to do with my situation too. This other book is kind of painful, so I'm trying to ease it with something a bit more enjoyable.

I am struggling on getting through A Feast for Crows so much more than I did for any other aSoIaF book and I can't quite figure out why. I like it but it just seems so tedious for some reason. Maybe it's just because the action from previous books in the series is lacking...

And I got my book from the Goodreads giveaway today! I'm trying to set it aside so that I can finish A Feast for Crows, but I have a feeling that might take a while.

A friend of mine suggested that I read the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, and the idea of it sounded great! But parts of this book are just absurd (IMO), and it just drives me up the wall sometimes. My husband laughs at me because I start to get angry at a specific character, and I'll yell at them. XD;

I'm moving on to the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. I love his Harry Dresden series, so I'm hoping for something just as enjoyable.

I know that feel, bro. Every time I make an attempt at Otherland I really enjoy the story and am excited to see how it goes, but every single time, I find it hard to get through and I end up throwing in the towel. And I don't know why, it's not like things stop happening. The pacing is pretty good, I just... I don't know. I haven't given up on it, I'm going to finish that book some day, dammit. Preferably this year.

It's just such a strange feeling.
Thank goodness for Goodreads keeping a percentage of progress though, because right now that's what I'm using for motivation. I just go on there and say "Look, you're 42% done with the book. Really more than that since the last section is all house lineage and stuff you already know... you can keep going...".

For me, it's the on-site goal-tracker. I don't want it to tell me I'm behind, and I love when it tells me I'm ahead. Mustn't fall behind! But either way, yeah, the site is a fantastic motivator. It's also proven very good for discovering and researching books. It's saved me a lot of time that I would have wasted on books that apparently aren't that good!

Kendra- I have heard that AFFC isn't as good as the first three books. I hope you get though it soon!

Cherry- Love the goal tracker when it tells me I'm on track, though usually it reminds me I'm behind and makes me feel bad.

I'm really excited to read A Feast For Crows, despite the mostly 'eh' reviews I've heard. I'm in the middle of The Dragon's Apprentice right now (I adore the way James A. Owen writes! And his dialogue is especially fun), but once I finish that I think I'll read AFFC, even though I promised myself I would read a classic before I did. I don't think I have the willpower to adhere to that.

There, I knocked out a book in two days, maybe that'll give me the willpower to get through the bad book. Or, hell, maybe it'll turn out to be good. I don't see how it could, but you never know, I guess. Might at least be a little interesting. Like those TV shows or movies that you'd never ever choose to watch, but one day you walk into a room and it's just on and you can't quite bring yourself to turn it off because you're kind of curious how it ends.

So that makes 7 books so far this year. Not bad, if I do say so myself. Especially considering a lot of those were the really big Harry Potter books. I should probably read something a little less fluffy than what I've been reading, though. But... ehhhh...

Cherry- I've read mostly fluff this year myself, and I'm still only at five books!
What's the bad book you're trying to get through? Though you might have mentioned it and I missed it.

Ugh, just finished The Dragon's Apprentice (a fun, easy read with enjoyable characters, though not as spectacular as I remember the earlier books being) and am trying to decide whether I ought to do the responsible thing and read either Scaramouche, Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight, or Much Ado about Nothing so as to get a classic in (haven't read anything too notable in the literary world yet this year!) or if I'm going to indulge myself and read A Feast for Crows. Any opinions?

Iron City, a book I won through Goodreads. Think of a cliched detective story and you think of those melodramatic descriptions of the scenery. It's that. And that could be a cute homage, but then the dialog is really stilted and awkward and, again, melodramatic. Eh. And I feel kind of bad for not liking it, because I feel like I'm in some way obligated to enjoy it. The author personally hosted the giveaway, personally messaged me to say it had been sent, and signed the book. If I just picked this up somewhere, I'd have no trouble with not liking it, but I feel sort of bad.

I wouldn't normally judge a book this early on in the story, but it has nothing to do with the plot or anything that coukd change over the course of the book, it's just bad writing and I don't see how that would be any different after 100 pages. :/

Cherry - You know, I don't think I've utilized it as a goal tracker quite yet. Though now that I check it does say that I'm "on track" for my current goal... which is definitely better than falling behind!

Those kind of books are the worst. It makes it even worse when you feel obligated to read them, too. It brings up that feeling of assigned novels in high school, which makes things so much more difficult to enjoy. But you can do it! Try and focus more on the story than the writing? It may be difficult, but it's worth a shot?

Iltu - It's not that AFFC is worse than the other novels, because I like the branches of the story it's covering and I'm well aware of the fact that it can't be all action, betrayal and murders all the time. However without as much of those things it does have a tendency to just move slower... which might be my problem. It moves the sequence of the series along rather well, it's just not as action packed.

I'd recommend moving on to AFFC, because if you're excited for it you'll likely get through it faster. The classics can always be read once you're done with what you currently desire to read.

I enjoyed Simon Armitage's translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight but I wouldn't know about any other versions.

So far Free Radicals has spent more time insulting the usual 'scientific method' than saying what the 'anarchists of science' have done differently. Apart from take LSD. If you take this books word for it, it seems like anyone who discovered anything of note in the last 75 years or so was on hallucinogenic drugs.

Kendra - Yeah, that's what I need to do. Musn't pay attention to poor writing! Stop being a snob, Cherry.

In other news, last night I started another book I won through Goodreads, Agorafabulous and so far it's very entertaining and I'm enjoying it!

Kat - Oh jeez.

Kendra- Ah, I see! I'm usually There were a few parts in ASOS that lagged and were a bit hard for me to get through, even though I enjoyed the character and plot development that came with them.

I actually going to go with Much Ado About Nothing. I promised myself, so I suppose I should stick to that. *sigh* And I'm a book behind, so a short (hopefully quick) read might just be what I need to get back on track! AFFC is going to take me a while no matter how interested I am. I usually use weekends to get big chunks of ASOIAF books done, but since the quarter is wrapping up I'll be busy with assignments. :gonk:

Cherry- Nothing ruins a book more quickly than poor writing! And disliking a book under those circumstances would be rough, oof. Sometimes as a book goes on I manage to get used to and semi-ignore bad writing, I hope that happens for you!

I just finished Clash of Kings last night - I think that you guys officially turned me into a Song of Fire and Ice fan.

I'm really pulled into the series and the story, but this second book didn't stand out too much in my mind. It felt more like filler. Finishing it left me with the feeling that Martin was just setting the stage, since the actual plot didn't seem to accomplish as much as the first book had. I'm excited to see where he's going with all of this, but Clash of Kings doesn't work so well as a stand-alone book.

Just so you all know, reading Shakespearean comedies while imagining your favorite actors/celebrities playing the characters is incredibly rewarding and hilarious. Shakespeare was meant to be read in Sofia Vergara's voice.

Knerd- I'm glad you're liking it! I also found that A Clash of Kings wasn't quite as good as A Game of Thrones, though I do love some of the new characters that were introduced.

All this talk of it has gotten me interested in the series too. It may be a bit before I'm able to get it, though. Love a good fantasy series, though!
