Oh? What book is it?

Yeah, I know...it kinda makes you feel like you're falling into the crowd that way.

It's this book, The 13th Horseman. It's aimed at younger teen boys but the Monty Python/Pratchett comparisons drew me in.

Popular books are just too mainstream! In all seriousness though, it just bothers me that even at this stage some people seem to be suggesting you should (or shouldn't) like it based on the author and if you don't then you're wrong. Last time I checked everyone was entitled to make their own minds up objectively.

I know it. I just want to read Rowling's new book when it comes out just to see what it is, then I'll decide if I like it.
Then again, reading the back to see if you'll like it also helps, lol.

I have a tendency to gravitate towards authors that I've liked in the past, and usually it turns out pretty well. So I'm pretty excited to see how Rowling's new book turns out! Especially knowing the level of detail that she comes up with for her stories I'm sure it'll still be good even if it's no Harry Potter. :D

I'm the same way; if it's an author I like, I'll end up checking out the book, regardless of how many people are reading it.

Exactly. Popularity doesn't deter me from novels the way it does for music and films. To me a novel is either good or it's not, the over-hyping effect doesn't have the same pull.

Though people who treat any type of opinion over media as a "right or wrong" situation are kind of ridiculous.

Kendra is better than words at me.

I'm just cranky and don't like being told what to think whether it's good or bad.

Neither do I. Whether or not a book I read is popular is complete coincidence.

It has something like six unrelated (at least they are right now, I assume they all come together later) stories that it keeps switching between. They're all very interesting, it's just a lot to keep up with and the book is long. You've got to work a bit to read it, or at least I do. But I've been working on reading with a better schedule and more regularity than I did in the past, so I'm hoping this time I can make it through and really be able to get into it. :) But I'm definitely going to need to take a mental break with some YA or something like that when I'm done.
I think he may do that in most of his books honestly. I'm reading Shadowmarch - the only book I've read by him so far - and there are about three or four things that overlap a little then two things that don't seem to overlap but you can see how they may be significant. I'm almost halfway through and some stuff is drawing together. My uncle really liked the Otherland series so he suggested them to me... but I couldn't remember the title but I remembered the author and I picked up Shadowmarch at the library. And yeah. They're good but require more thinking than I usually use when reading fiction - even mysteries. I sort of like that aspect as long as I read the book quickly enough. It's when I get distracted by real life that I sort of lose interest.
What is YA?

YA stands for Young Adult. Novels geared at teens and, well, young adults.

Yeah, Otherland comes to me with a recommendation from my mom. I'm borrowing the book from her. But then, she also really loves Stephen King books and they're difficult for me too. Enjoyable, but, ugh, so long-winded. And I had the same problem with It - constantly switching between six different people. But at least with Otherland, all the stories are very distinct and easy to keep straight. In It, the characters are so similar (at least at first - I didn't finish it). Really interesting story, but at the start of almost every chapter I had to flip back to remind myself who the starring character was. It makes me feel so stupid, but my brain just says "no." :( Probably doesn't help that I do most of my reading when I'm sleepy!

Oooh. I see. That makes more sense now. Try Stephen King's novellas and short stories? They usually stay in one persons head and many are really good. Like Rage (which I know many don't like actually...), The Long Walk, Running Man, The Mist, Apt Pupil, and the like. If you like horror suspense type stuff that is... I adore The Stand though... but it doesn't stay in one persons head at all. But they do sort of come together near the middle.
Anyway, back to Otherland... yeah, reading when your sleepy probably doesn't help. xD
I'm usually reading 10+ stories at a time (many of which are fanfiction honestly)... that could be a good exercise for such novels.

Yeah, I've read some of his short stories and one-person novels. The Mist is my favorite of his short stories, actually. :) I also really liked Cujo (though that had a few POVs, they were all distinct) and Misery. It's kind of funny, I have a ton of Stephen King books. I always come across his books at thrift stores for a quarter or so, and just can't turn them down at that price. I've got, let's see... seven. But then my mom has at least a dozen more that I have and can borrow.

That's where I tend to get his books too~! For almost one person perspective stories I highly suggest The Talisman. I've read it at least three times. It's really good. I think I got mine for a fifty cents. xP

I've read Misery but I haven't read Cujo yet. I don't know why... must be all the other books distracting me. o-o That's probably the only thing I don't like about reading. There is so much to read that I'm all scattered and unsure where to go next.

An advance copy of Illusion by Frank Peretti. The story sounds bizarrely interesting. But I have to get through the rest of A Feast For Crows... then the other Goodreads book and maybe one more that's been on my list before I'll let myself move on to this one.

Cookiedough - the Talisman is actually one that I don't have. I have Cujo, Everything's Eventual (short story collection), It, Misery, Needful Things, The Shining, On Writing and The Tommyknockers. Huh, that's eight, guess I couldn't count yesterday. But I've got access to everything my mom's got, too, but those are sort of scattered all over so I don't feel like tracking them down for a list. Anyway, of those, I'm probably the most interested in The Shining right now. That's a more recent addition, got that one a few months ago from Goodwill.

I think I might have to put Otherland on hold. I've been sick, so definitely not up to a book that requires focus. Might do a short, easy read while I get better then do Otherland next.

I haven't read The Shining. I find if I watch the show or movie first I have no drive to read the Stephen King novel of it.
Have you seen The Running Man? The story isn't even similar to it. I don't get it. o-o

Aw. Feel better soon!
I tend to read cheesy romance smut when I don't want to focus on a story. I do have to say it does sound good right now. Too much family stress kills me slowly. D: But yes... now I'm rambling.

Cherry and cookiedough, I've read some of Stephen King's as well. I don't have quite as many though. Let's see...I have Misery, Carrie, and The Mist. I haven't read any of his others. Which one's do you recommend? Oh, and btw there was a show a while back called Kingdom Hospital, do you know if there is a book about it?

I just looked it up. It's based of a Danish Miniseries, not a book. But with King's name in the title, I thought it was based on one of his books too!

I liked the short story collection Skeleton Crew (includes The Mist). I also really liked the short story The Langoliers.

Cookiedough - I think I'm gonna read John Dies at the End, sort of a comedy/horror thing. I read the first chapter a while back on amazon and it wasn't a hard read. Got the book for Christmas and I've been meaning to read it. It should make for an entertaining, easy read. Not much into romances myself!

But... oogh, I think John Dies at the End is the last book I have that isn't intimidating. What am I going to use for fluff when I finish that? :gonk:

Stephen King recomendations: Anything he wrote under Bachman is pretty good and they're usually shorter. My favorite novel by him is The Stand and Under The Dome, but they're both quite long and I know many people find some of the parts boring. They also jump around a bit from character to character - more in The Stand than Under The Dome. The books he wrong with Peter Straub are pretty great too: The Talisman and the sequel Black House. Bag of Bones is decent too, if you like some supernatural twists.

Cherry: Look through some goodreads recomendations?

I always go to the library first. I rarely buy books anymore. Not enough space. xD
Unless it's something I know I'll read again and again.

Good luck Roxxi! I hope you like 'em. (:
