Kitami: Good god that's a lot of holds. I work at a library 32 hours a week, and we have never had a book with that many holds on it to date. How large is your library? The most I've ever seen is 84 or so with the Hunger Games. (Not with catching fire or mockingjay though).

I live in Denver, so we have a public library system. Besides the Central library, I think we have 23 other libraries in the system.

Kitami: We have a library system as well, but we only have 3 branches. So we have a lot smaller I guess you could say user population. We are part of something called OhioLink and SearchOhio though. Those are two programs that link a bunch of libraries and universities together so they can share books, and other media related things.

My old town had a system like that. Like, the whole town had one library but there was a program where you -might- be able to borrow from near by towns or the university library.

Ya, Mentor, Ohio unlike Columbus, Sandusky, Cincinnati, or other rather large cities is very small compared to them. Denver though in comparison is huge! Since Mentor is also small we don't have things like a universal card where you can go to different areas like cities and such with the same card.

Guess I'm really lucky then ... Where I live I can order books from any library in the province.

---------- Post added 05-06-2012 at 01:00 AM ----------

And even from outside the province.

The Glasgow library catalogue says there are 33 copies and 6 reservations but it gets upset if I try to find out which branches they're in and goes to an error page. Good job I didn't really want the book.

Well, I finally powered through the end of Down Came the Rain by Brooke Shields. I feel sorry for her that she went through post partum depressing, but she is just not a very good writer and the book was rather dull. I'll probably be donating this one, I have no desire to keep it to read it again.

I finally got around to getting a library card! The local library has no late fees and you can renew online if there isn't a wait on the book, so that's nice! So I took out Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, Going Postal by Terry Pratchett and Burmese Days by George Orwell. I didn't realize Going Postal was part of the Discworld series until I got home. I know the series is largely standalone books set in the same universe, but I had been hoping to read the first book first so I'd get a proper introduction to the world, but... ah well. I haven't heard from many people who actually did that with Discworld, so I guess I'll do okay!

I started Miss Peregrine's on Friday, and even though I was visiting with my grandparents and didn't have much time for reading as a result, I'm already about halfway through it. It's short, but so far it's very good. Nice fast pace. Easy on my tiny little baby brain.

Going Postal is the first novel with Moist von Lipwig (Making Money is the next one) so it should be alright. It's a cracking story regardless. I think Moving Pictures and The Truth are the most similar in theme but they're not directly connected. The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic help set the scene for the Discworld as a whole but it's not necessary to have read them.

All of the above being my personal opinions, of course. Not trying to set myself up as a Pratchett authority!

That's good to know, thanks! Then maybe while I'm reading if I have questions about the world that aren't answered in this book, I could ask you. And when I'm done, I'll keep my out for Making Money! Assuming I like Going Postal, that is, but I'm sure I will. Everything I've heard of Terry Pratchett's writing sounds like it was written specifically for me, so I'm quite sure I'll enjoy it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention this in my previous post, but my local library is hiring (paid!) summer interns! I'm not sure how much of a chance I stand, but the area it's in is very rural and... well, hickish, not really the library sort, so I may not have that much competition. The position does require "a basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal system," however. I know roughly what it is, and I can't understand why it would be necessary in this library... They have the fiction section and the non-fiction section (as far as non-children's books go) and then alphabetized by the author's last name. I don't really need to memorize the dewey decimal system to be able to put books away properly in that now, do I? But if any of you are familiar with the system of know of a good and easy way to learn it, any links would be greatly appreciated. Even if I don't use it there, they do say I should know it and I'd rather not lie about that.

But if I do get the job, that would be positively fantastic. I love sorting and organizing, so a job involving that would be my dream come true. Not to mention it's only for the summer, which is great as I start college this fall. I've never attended formal classes and had to do studying and such, so that will be a very new experience to me, not one that I think I could juggle along with a job at first. The job ends around the beginning of August, and my classes start mid-late August. How perfect! And how nice would that look on a resume as opposed to working at a fast food place or something?

Cherry, as long as you can count, the Dewey Decimal system shouldn't be a problem. Good luck! Working at a library sounds like it would be a ton of fun, especially since it's an internship. That way you won't have to get bogged down by the boring and serious stuff, like getting the funds to buy new books or dealing with patrons who want you to take certain novels off the shelves. I'm sure you'll get the position and then spend all of your time updating us on the awesome stuff you get to read. ;)

So I'm almost done with George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series. Almost. Only about 300 pages left on the last book. I've got to admit that I'm losing steam, but I just want to know what's going to happen! And not have to worry about spoilers anymore! It feels like I've been running a marathon and the finish line is just around the next corner.

The only question is what I'm going to read after this. I haven't given any thought to other books in a while now. Good thing I've got a really huge (and random, very random) collection of free books on my Kindle. I've just been grabbing deals on classics and novellas whenever I manage to spot them. I'll probably just end up choosing whichever one is listed next in my index: "Perdido Street Station" by China Mieville, anyone?

Update on my list: I've finished Ash, and have now moved onto book number 30- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.
I've heard good things about this book and it looked really interesting to me.

What that's so sad. I guess we will be seeing where the wild things are and other things go flying off out library shelves.

I heard that this morning. It's a shame, but his health has been bad for the past few years and I really think that he was prepared for it. Read/listen to some of his most recent interviews and he brings the topic of death up quite a bit. :(

It's a shame, he was incredibly talented. I'm afraid that I just don't know any of his literary work other than Wild Things.

Also, I wanted to tell you guys, the book I'm reading- Daughter of Smoke and Bone is wonderful. Its officially going on my list of favorite books.

Taiyo:: What are those about?
