I want to try out those O.W.L.S. but on the other hand, I'm a bit examed out, haha!

Has anyone else read The Elegance of the Hedgehog? What did you think? I just finished it recently. I thought it was alright, I took a few things away from it and enjoyed the story and characters, but I wouldn't recommend it or read it again. I was really disappointed, I was expecting great things. :( I think what got to me was the tangents. Sometimes they worked for developing the characters as really intelligent ladies with incredible ways of thinking, and other times they didn't seem to add much to plot, character development, or any other aspect of the story, and instead came across as the author trying to seem clever.

Cherry Who? 06-16-2012 05:10 AM

Aww, it sucks when a good-sounding story doesn't live up to expectations. But no, I haven't read it.

Have any of you read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? It's so popular, I figure one of you must have. I'm having issues getting into it, so I could really use someone telling me how awesome it is to help me get into it.

KatMagenta 06-16-2012 08:13 AM

I haven't finished War Horse yet. Being home means too many nights out and not enough reading. ^^;

I like the Millenium trilogy. Once I did manage to get into TGWTDT I ended up reading about half of it in one sitting and sulking when I found out the English translation of the other books weren't out yet. Or if you'd prefer- they am awesomes!

Funnily enough Män som hatar kvinnor (the Swedish language film) was on televison last night and made me think about reading the books again.

MajorZeldaFreak 06-16-2012 09:11 AM

I don't like reading unless it's about the universe, random facts or video games. =3

Iltu 06-16-2012 01:37 PM

Cherry- I've not read it, but my mom has, and she didn't like it. I'm sure that is not what you wanted to hear, sorry! But she was also complaining that everyone else seemed to love it and no one agreed with her opinion... So that's a good sign, right?

Hope you manage to get into it! I'm having trouble with A Dance with Dragons myself. So sad! Reading the other books in the ASoIaF series was so much fun, but this one has been mostly a chore. There's been a few moments I couldn't put it down, but not many. It might just be me and not the book, though.

Zelda-Neat! Those are three pretty different topics. It's very cool that one of your interests is the universe. I took a class on stars, galaxies, and the universe and was overwhelmed.

I have updated my list.

I read a series that once again wasn't originally on my list - The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher - and I really liked it. Then I reread the Sookie Stackhouse novels so I could read the newest one and I did not enjoy the ending of the newest book.

Then I read a book my cousin recommended to me Fluke by Christopher Moore. It was really funny! I am going to read more by him once I finish my list.

And finally, I finished Napoleon of Notting Hill which was funny as well but had moments that I just wanted to scream "GET TO THE POINT!"

Now I am starting Pride and Prejudice.

Cherry Who? 06-25-2012 09:10 PM

Have you read P&P before, Estrella?

I'm following this neat video project on Youtube. It's the basic Pride and Prejudice story, but retold in modern times as if Elizabeth were vlogging. Okay, actually that sounds kind of stupid when I say it like that, but it's really well done and I'm enjoying it. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. They post a new "vlog" every Monday and Friday.

Estrella 06-25-2012 11:42 PM

I haven't read it yet and I am enjoying it so far. I'll have to check out the videos later.

I'm checking out the videos now and I'm excited. It may have to wait, still, because I think too many people are watching Netflix at the moment.

Okay, I watched the first one and I think it's going to be really cool and funny. Haha. I'll probably spend more time watching these after I finish the book. . I'm over halfway through with it already.

TaiyoTsuki 06-26-2012 03:42 PM

Ick...not having internet at home anymore isn't fun...

Iltu 06-26-2012 06:29 PM

Estrella- I love Christopher Moore! I've not read Fluke (it's on my to-read list!), but Lamb and his vampire trilogy (Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, and Bite Me) are all really funny if you're looking for places to start with his other work.

Taiyo- That does suck! :( How long have you been without?

TaiyoTsuki 06-26-2012 08:08 PM

@ Iltu: This is going to be the second week. Ickies...at least I'm keeping a hard-copy log of my reading. Makes it a LOT easier since I'm in the library's reading program, anyway. :D

Estrella 06-26-2012 08:12 PM

I'll have to look those up, Iltu. I really enjoyed Fluke so I don't dour his others will be enjoyable to me.

I finished Pride and Prejudice last night. I started to get upset that it wasn't going to end the way J thought it should.

TaiyoTsuki 06-26-2012 08:20 PM

@ Estrella: I had to read Pride and Prejudice in high school...it bored me to DEATH. Ugh...almost as bad as trying to read The Scarlet Letter.

Estrella 06-26-2012 09:44 PM

I really liked it, haha. Especially because it ended the way I wanted to.
I thought it was a good story.

TaiyoTsuki 06-26-2012 09:59 PM

Meh...I was just bored out of my mind by it. I had trouble reading The Great Gatsby, too. Getting through Beowulf wasn't a problem, though.

Estrella 06-26-2012 10:02 PM

I think the only book I struggled with was The Scarlett Letter.

TaiyoTsuki 06-26-2012 10:18 PM

Part of the reason is punctuation issues, and it was...dull.

Iltu 06-26-2012 10:28 PM

I haven't read Pride and Prejudice, but I really want to! I love the movie version with Keira Knightly.
I haven't read the Scarlet Letter or Beowulf, but I enjoyed The Great Gatsby. I think I liked most books I had to read in high school, or at the very least didn't utterly dislike them... Except Hemingway, unfortunately. Love love love his Nick Carraway stories, but his novels are not my cup of tea.
Now that I'm thinking about it, though, I wasn't too fond of The Stranger or The Turn of the Screw either. But all the others I was at least remotely fond of! I have quite a few favorites from high school.

Taiyo- Your library has a reading program? Neat! I wish mine did.

Cherry Who? 06-27-2012 12:27 AM

I'll admit that I probably would have struggled with Pride and Prejudice a bit if I hadn't seen the movie a few times. Occasionally the slightly different language would throw me off a bit and I wouldn't be quite sure what was happening, but having memories of the movie helped me get my bearings. :ninja:

Estrella, how did you want the book to end?

Superstition 06-27-2012 01:08 AM

Hmmm, this sounds interesting! So, I just post the start of my list when I've finished my first book, ping Knerd, and then update as I finish books?

Knerd 06-27-2012 01:26 AM

Yep! Let me know when your list is ready and I'll add a link to it on our front page.

The Great Gatsby is a tough book to get through. I've always vaguely understood why so many schools teach it to 15 year olds, but it's so hard to appreciate when you're still in school. I think that you really need to have some life experience and understand how loss feels before you can fully enjoy that story. I know that I was bored stiff at the time I read it, even though I liked the characters and the plot.

P&P is fun, but I don't think it's my favorite Jane Austen. Anyone else here like Sense and Sensibility? I don't know why, but I've always found that one really appealing!

Estrella 06-27-2012 01:35 AM

Cherry - I wanted Lizzy and Darcy to end up together from the moment they had their first argument. Haha. I get all worked up about wanting to play matchmaker to characters in a book that I get really put out about the author not doing it my way. (I think this is part of the reason I haven't enjoyed the Sookie novels as much with the last two.)

And I won't lie, I had to look up a few words to make sure I was getting the whole point of some of the conversations. I may watch a movie next because I haven't seen one and I bet I'd enjoy it.

I've been really enjoying the video blog Cherry recommended. It's very hi proud and I feel like they have captured the attitude behind each character very well.

I haven't read Sense and Sensibility but it's on my list.

Cherry Who? 06-27-2012 04:16 AM

OH, I misread and thought you said that it didn't end how you wanted it to.

Glad you're enjoying the Lizzie Bennet Diaries! It needs more viewers, so if you know any other P&P fans, spread the word. It's currently not making enough money. :(

Estrella 06-27-2012 05:33 AM

I'll post in on FB and see. There are a few avid readers amongst my friends.

Well, I know of one that might actually enjoy the videos.

M i r o 06-27-2012 05:59 AM

I don't think I'll ever make it to a 50 book mark, but I do remember making a list of what I have read a long time ago. xD
I know I've read more than 50 books, I just can't remember >all< of them.
