Quote:

  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  4. Redoubt - Heralds of Valdemar
  5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  6. Maiden Flight
  7. Border Lair
  8. Ice Dragon
  9. Prince of Spies
  10. Firedrake
  11. Dragon Storm
  12. The Ice Dragon
  13. Wings of Change
  14. The Hobbit

Those are the 14 books Flink's read. Since Flink works overnight now, she has a lot of down time between calls, so she reads between calls when she isn't drawing. Heh.

Many of those, sadly, are romance novels. x-x

Cherry Who? 03-10-2013 08:57 PM

Ah, that would explain why the only ones I recognize are Harry Potter at the Hobbit. [lol] Good strategy, though, reading between calls! During the semester I tend to get the most reading done if I bring my book to college with me and read between classes and while waiting for my ride.

Roxxi Shiagami 03-11-2013 12:58 AM

@ Cherry, Deathnote is pretty good. I liked it, haven't really watched the anime though, so I couldn't tell you how that is.

@Flink, don't worry if you check out my lists, you'll see that a majority of mine are romance as well.

Cherry Who? 03-11-2013 01:00 AM

I've watched the episodes that cover the first three volumes. But I watched them immediately after reading it, so they blend together a little in my mind, so I couldn't speak well for how the anime stands on its own. But I did enjoy it! I think I remember thinking that the manga was a little better, but I think that's mostly because they could go a bit more in-depth there on certain things.

Roxxi Shiagami 03-11-2013 02:05 AM

I think that's the way with most books vs shows/movies, probably because they have more time, more ways to expand, etc.

Flink 03-11-2013 08:03 AM

Wait, reading manga counts? Would reading The Walking Dead count? D:

Green - Currently Reading
Red - Read

Wow, that was some time ago..
I've read books after these but I just cannot think of names.

Cherry Who? 03-12-2013 02:51 AM

You can count it however you want, Flink. I think due to the shortness of comics/manga, some people count multiple volumes as one book. Some don't. It's up to how you perceive it.

Flink 03-12-2013 11:13 AM

Flink, sadly cannot read manga/comics. Her eyes can't handle all of the stuff most artists put in one page. :(

Cherry Who? 03-12-2013 06:41 PM

Time for new glasses?

RoadToGallifrey 03-12-2013 09:57 PM

I've given up on Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist and moved onto Skagboys

Knerd 03-14-2013 01:52 AM

I've heard that Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist was a little self-indulgent and hard to get through. (Was it Cherry who said that? Probably. [lol]) I can't really blame you for putting it down. But I just read the wiki page for Skagboys and it seems pretty interesting. It's really promising to hear that people have compared it to Trainspotting. When you're done, tell us what you think!

Right now, I'm reading more Murakami. I've had a copy of "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" on my bookshelf for a while now and it's about time that I've read it. But the problem is...like most of Murakami's novels, it doesn't have a real storyline. I'm 200 pages in and I wouldn't be able to tell you what it's about. [sweat] Lots of things are happening, there are two fairly unrelated storylines going on, none of the characters have been given names and I'm still waiting for the Big Reveal. Maybe it'll all become coherent by the end? I can only hope!

Cherry Who? 03-14-2013 07:50 AM

Nope, not me, I haven't read it. I think it was Vinyl who was saying that a bit back because I asked her about it when she started reading it. So I was involved, at least. [lol]

One of my most rewarding experiences with a book was one where the plot wasn't really apparent until the end. Burmese Days by George Orwell. I lack the technical knowledge to give it a proper critique and really talk about why it blew me away, but it just did. The subtlety and character development, all leading up to that end. I see it mostly as an exercise in character development, as the only sort of plot is just how the characters interact with each other. But it was just so masterfully done. The way you can see hints of the trajectories that the characters are on but just have to watch it play out in an emotionally painful way. In some ways you know what is going to happen from the start, and yet you don't at all.

I don't even think anyone here has read that book, so I'm sort of spouting to the abyss here, but fdhjkfd that book. When I think about it a lot, I begin to question my decision to count 1984 as my all-time favorite. 1984 was a masterpiece, but I just don't know if it has the same subtlety. I'll need to read it again. Not currently in possession of my copy, though.

Flink 03-14-2013 04:44 PM

Cherry: It's not the glasses. Even when her glasses were brand new, she had a hard time following comics/mangas.

Speaking of glasses, Flink does need new ones. Woo for slowly going blind. She's gone from needed new glasses every two years to once a year. Which is ok for now, since her insurance pays for a new pair every year.

Flink is debating reading some of Patch Adams' work. But she'll need to get over the fact that he's a clown, first...

Aspinous list

I tried to this one year I think, but totally failed. But I want to try again, because reading is great. I haven't read much the last year so this is a good thing to get me into reading again I hope. My ultimate goal is 50 books, but I will be happy if I only manage to 25 as well. I will count from beginning of 2013 and 1 year ahead (so I'm a bit behind since I haven't read many books this year).

I have one problem though. I don't know what to read. Therefore I will take any suggestion thrown at me (or at someone else :p) and read it. If I can find it at my local library. That won't be much of a problem though they are good at ordering books if needed. I will read in Swedish and English.

I will actually take suggestion for basically ANYTHING. I read everything from graphic novels to non-fiction. Only thing that bores me manically is romance novels, so pure romance I won't read, unless there's some mad exception. :p

Now on to my list:

Aspinous Book Challenge 2013

1. A Storm Of Swords
2. Cirkeln
3. Eld
4. A Feast For Crows (currently reading)
5.
6.

Cherry Who? 03-14-2013 06:47 PM

Well, given that I just gushed about Burmese Days by Orwell, take that as my recommendation. [lol]

Aspinou 03-14-2013 07:55 PM

I haven't read that one, i'll add it to my "to read". :)

RoadToGallifrey 03-15-2013 03:14 PM

Yeah I really wouldn't recommend the book, it's dire haha. It's a shame because the reviews were pretty good.

Skagboys is a re-read for me. I read it last year. I love it :) if you liked Trainspotting/Porno I'd definitely recommend it. It's much longer and it leads into Trainspotting brilliantly. I love Irvine Welsh, his books are fantastic :)

Aspinou 03-18-2013 08:34 PM

*sigh*
I read a few chapters today which was good, but if I want to do this I really need to be able to sit down and read for a bit longer. I get so restless. I don't know why. Anyway, I'm going to the library tomorrow and hopefully adding a few books to my "to read" list. :)

RoadToGallifrey 03-18-2013 09:12 PM

I'm the same! I either read an entire book in a day or read one page a month. There is no inbetween ha. I haven't had a book grab me since The Fault In Our Stars though. I really want to be sucked into a story line again D:

Aspinou 03-18-2013 09:38 PM

Yes that's exactly how I am!
I also miss reading like that. It's a bit frustrating.

nemo.love_22 03-18-2013 09:40 PM

I've had a handful of books that I read in one sitting because putting them down is not an option - they're that good! >.< I've not had one of those books in awhile though. Any book, for me, by Kristen Hannah tends to be a read in one sitting, and her books are like 500+ pages each. But OMG, so good! <3

Aspinou 03-18-2013 10:32 PM

I haven't read anything by Kristen Hannah. It might be something to add to my to read list.
I have a habit of re-reading books though. Because then I can just relax and read. Also when a new book comes out in a series I tend to re-read the previous ones. I get pretty occupied by that :p

nemo.love_22 03-18-2013 10:34 PM

Do you like romance, that is what she is known for, but not the typical harlequin romance that people sometimes think of... they're all amazingly well written, at least I think so, and I love her story lines. =] Oh, I re-read books too. But not like that. But I've been known to re-read favorites of mine quite a few times. But hey, at least you do read. :)

Aspinou 03-18-2013 10:40 PM

I'm generally not into romance novels no, but I'm willing to at least try to read some. There's always the exceptions. :)
