I've seen Colour of Magic, and it was sort of like they tried to stuff it full of everything, so it came off a little... clunky to me.
I've seen all four hours of Going Postal a few times now, and it's one of my favorite movies ever made out of a book.
Making Money is a good book, carries on from stamps to printed currency, and all that's involved there. More goodness from the likes of Mr. Lipwig and golems and all sorts of nice things.
Some of my favorites are the ones with Death and his daughter, and the Assassin's Guild as focal points, and Vetinari is one of the greatest characters ever created, in my opinion. He truly is the only one who knows what's really going on, at all.
I also like the use of zombies, werewolves, vampires, and all, as likeable characters who deserve their rights like anyone else.
I think I watched the Color of Magic series. If I recall correctly, I enjoyed it at the time, but it didn't leave a lasting impression on me.
I didn't know there was an adaptation of Going Postal, though. I would love to see that. I read Making Money also and I enjoyed it, but it didn't quite match the delight I felt with Going Postal.
I've never seen the "Color of Magic" adaptation, but the book itself struck me as a bit disconnected and not smooth-flowing, so I wouldn't be surprised if the tv version picked up on that.
The book is more like a series of short stories than a continuous novel. We see bits and pieces of their adventures and nothing really holds the entire thing together.
Well, it was the first one he did in the series I think, and it was different from what he'd been trying to do before. The Discworld has evolved a great deal over the years, from being a totally relevant send-up of the whole fantasy genre to what it is now, a totally relevant send-up of pretty much everything.
He's changed with the times, like any good writer, and of course his later works are going to be far better than his early stuff.
As far as I'm concerned, Moving Pictures and Small Gods were some of the best early indicators of where he was headed with it all... social commentary, making people think about things they take for granted, and calling the whole stupid mess into question from a rational perspective has become his hallmark, and it makes him great, in my opinion.
Whelp, I've gotten through the first four volumes of Attack on Titan, and it is kind of interesting. Not as hot on it as Bleach or D. Gray-man though .
Gods, I have got to make a list of mangas I need to get caught up on/read. It's ridiculous how much of a backlog I've got....
If anyone has the GoodReads app, you can set yourself a challenge to read x number of books for the year. I've set myself a challenge for 40, and right now I'm three books ahead of schedule, reading the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
Oh my goodness, I've actually had time to read lately!!
I finally finished The Great Gatsby. I don't know if I could even say that I started it before, but I read the first chapter a year ago (to the month) with the intent of finishing it. Then my lit course decided I had other things to read. Started over (hardly redundant at all, honestly) and finished it. Very good read, very deserving of its position as a classic. I feel like I missed a lot of the significance of it, though, so I plan on looking up some things said about it by particularly smart people and try to see it from their eyes. I tend to read books very literally, so I miss some of that good stuff.
I'm so nearly finished with Auschwitz and After, but it's not exactly a fun read, for obvious reasons. It's emotionally draining. An important read, but not something I'm exactly chomping at the bit to finish. Hopefully I'll be able to find an hour or two on a particularly good day (or at least a day in which I feel strong) and try to finish the rest all in one go.
But for right now I'm just taking it easy with some graphic novels. A friend gave me a copy of the first few issues of the current Hawkeye run, so I'm having a lot of fun with that. It's a very funny and enjoyable read, even if halfway through they switched from an artist whose style I love to one whose style just really bothers me (even if I'm reading other comics he's currently doing - man is busy). After that I'm going to move on to the Hannibal Lecter series. I had all the books but the first one (thrift shop finds), a fact I brought up to my manager in casual conversation. For my birthday she got me the first book.
I loved The Great Gatsby. I feel like its one of those books I could read many times and not get tired of it. I get annoyed with people who call it a wonderful love story, though, because I feel like its really a story about destructive obsession....
Destructive obsession, a culture that breeds loveless marriages and infidelity, a culture that breeds interest in a person only as far as dramatic intrigue can go...
SPOILERX
The bit where virtually no one attended Gatsby's funeral, despite his parties containing a good half of New York, really affected me.
("fuck the jazz age" "well I have no idea what that one is about" was stuck in my head for most of the book >>)
Late to the discussion but the TV adaptation of The Colour of Magic also incorporates The Light Fantastic. It's probably my least favourite of the Sky ones (not really into David Jason as Rincewind). Hogfather is good fun.
I haven't been making a note of books this year but I read a few books while I was on holiday including Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which has been on my to-read list for a while now.
Oh! I have Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? on my to-read list! I just put it on hold at the library like the day before yesterday! I hope its good.
I haven't been keeping track of my read books worth a darn. I had some written down from the beginning of the year, but there's been a stretch of about 4 months where I haven't been keeping track at all. XP
Kitami, this is why I like the GoodReads app (GoodReads website). It's helping me keep track of all the books I've read. All I do is scan the barcode on the back of the book, mark the book as "Currently reading", and when I'm finished, tell the app I've finished, and my personal challenge bar tells me how far along I am in my challenge (40 books for the year). I'm four books ahead of schedule right now, so I know I can relax for a little while, and devote some time to my crafting impulses.
Dang, that's cool. I'll have to get that when I get a new phone.....I don't think I should download anything else on to my poor phone. Its having trouble doing basic phone things right now... -pokes at it- I think its on its last legs.
Well you don't have to download the app, you can sign up for an account on the plain website, then when you're ready, you can sign into your account from your phone and sync them up.
I've been using goodreads for 2 years now, and I just got the app on my new iPhone. I absolutely love the feature to scan books because whenever I'm at a bookstore I always wonder "is this actually good?" and then have to stand there for five minutes trying to look up reviews on my phone. Now I can just scan the barcode and go straight to the page with helpful reviews.
Here's my GoodReads profile if anyone wants to friend. I'm debating with myself whether to finish out the series I've been re-reading, or if I should go look for something new.
How long has it been since you last read the series, and do you still remember it well? If re-reading it is almost like reading it for the first time, absolutely continue. If it's just rereading something you remember well, go on to something new and exciting.
Well this is the third time around on this series, and I'm mostly just reading them because I can't think of what I really want to read next. I'm kind of on hangover after the last brand new book I got... and I'm trying to scrimp my funds until I find another job, so....
