I liked The Hunger Games also. I wasn't wowed while I was reading them, but they lingered in my mind and the more I think about the series, the more I like it.
And no, the story is not about romance.

In fact, Katniss was actively anti-romance most of the time, just putting on a show for the Games most of the time, until the very very end.
I felt the movies actually presented the story better. As for the books...

I thought the ending was terrible, going against everything she stood for. She never took an active role in anything, she never really cared unless it was her and hers on the line. And Gale, just wow.

The line in your spoiler is how I felt reading the books. I guess the movies over-emphasized the whole romance thing.
@zigbigadorlube - I was surprised by the ending, too.
I just watched the latest Hunger Games movie and enjoyed it. It was kinda rough, since it was the first half of Mocking Jay and the ending was hard, but overall I think they're making good adaptations of the books. Even if the romance is turned up a few notches.
I haven't seen the newest movie yet. I'm still surprised they broke it up. I feel like not a whole lot really even happened in that book so it wasn't worth breaking up but whatever. Hollywood's gonna do what hollywood's gonna do I suppose.
I haven't seen the latest movie yet. I am sure that they broke it up because so many other series have had their last books broken up successfully in the past -- and then they make more money that way!
Well, there is a lot stuff that we never see in the books because everything is from Katniss's point of view. The movie adds "missing moment" scenes like that, particularly stuff that's going on in the other Districts, which makes the plot more understandable.
I am generally skeptical of splitting a book into multiple films—especially with the Hobbit movies, I think the second one was a disaster—but with Mockingjay I think it makes sense and they're doing a good job with it. I've been watching the movies with my sister who hasn't read the books, and she had enjoyed them and hasn't had any trouble following the plot. (Can't say the same for the Harry Potter movies; I always ended up needing to explain the plot to people who haven't read the books.)

It was amazing. It was.. so compelling. It was really hard to put down, and definitely one of those books that could keep me up all night. I had to force myself to read something else during my breaks at work, because I can't get very much reading done at those times, and Red Tent was one such read where if you only read snippets at a time, you come away - or at least I do - with confusion about what the f just happened? I have to go back and re-read it, which I hate doing. So definitely not light reading. You want to set aside a good block of time to absorb everything that's going on.
