I can definitely relate!! Fortunately, I did enjoy many of the college readings I had to do. Not so much the textbooks, though!

Most of my college reading was either textbooks or French literature and my Fremch teacher really had a nack for picking out the weirdest books. >_<

Yeah... In this one book the main character was not very intelligent and he buried his dead father under the floor boards of his house. I can't remember much else about the book apart from just how very stupid that guy was. V_V

Oohh I don't know about that specific book, but it reminds me of one by Edgar Allan Poe in which a man buries someone under the floor boards :)

Hm, it's not like that at all. I was trying to find a summary but all of them really make it sound a lot different than it is. I guess this somewhat explains it but not really:

Quote:
Rigobert is a man who never went to school. He is depicted as someone who has earned the right not to speak a word of French and who is quite proud of it. Because he despises French and prides himself about speaking only Creole, he could be viewed as being representative of a pre-1988 Raphael Confiant, who was fighting for his right to express himself only in Creole. Yet, the omniscient narrator presents Rigobert’ stream of consciousness in French. Paradoxically, we can even hear Rigobert, a character who does not speak French, think in French.
It's all quite political but it's really hard to understand that from the book given that the main character was never educated and you only see things through his eyes.

Quote:
Between 1939 and 1945, Martinique was cut off from the mainland and the outside world. Admiral Robert sent Plenipotentiary of Marshal Petain, there was a way to Vichy rule tyranny. It is in this tragicomic colonial feel confident that Raphael chose to weave the fates of these colorful characters that are Rigobert and Philomena, negroes of Morne Pichevin slum, Alcide, the teacher out of the rank of Amédée Mauville, intellectual mulatto out of class, the Indian agricultural worker Vidrassamy and white patriarch Creole Henri Salin of Bercy. The author, in doing so, brush impressive fresco of the time.
I dunno. In short not very interesting unless that's your sort of thing. Oh, the title by the way is "Le Nègre et l'Amiral". One book that I did actually enjoy reading was "Metisse Blanche" which was about a vietnamese girl who was taught at a French catholic school in Vietnam before moving to France to teach. That one was actually quite interesting. I didn't really enjoy a lot of the autobiographies we read but that one was really good.

Sounds a bit confusing, actually. I guess it would make more sense to someone who actually reads the book. ^_^;

I do enjoy Edgar Allan Poe's stories, though...if you want to read the short one with the floorboards, it's called The Tell-Tale Heart. <3

Nope, don't count on it. That book was downright confusing. I barely understood it. That's what I mean about that teacher. Reading high level French books is hard enough without choosing a super confusing political subject to go along with it. >.<

My favorite Edgar Allen Poe story is "The Cask of Amontillado". I've read that one quite a few times.

Funny you folks should be talking about Poe, I was just thinking about him today!

You know his short story "The Fall of the House of Usher"? Well, Ray Bradbury wrote a spin-off type tale in his book "The Martian Chronicles." The title of Bradbury's short story is "Usher II" and I think it's one of the best pieces of lit I've ever encountered. If you ever have the chance, check it out.

Funny you should mention The Martian Chronicles. I'm reading The Martian right now. Or more accurately listening to the audiobook. It's really good do far!

Actually the one I'm reading is by Andy Weir. It's sooo funny, so great. I'm reading (well actually listening) to it in the subway and just keep cracking up which is causing some stares but ah whatever.
