Yeah, I can see how those books would be disappointing that way. Even considering how dark the first book can be, it's still fairly magical, while the rest of the trilogy is a long descent into seriousness. I think it fits with the overall theme of childhood-to-adulthood transition, and the ways in which that is—and is not—a fall from grace. I'm pretty sure Pullman carefully planned it all out; he was pursing a strong critique of Biblical dogma in that story and honestly he can be pretty pedantic about it at times. But when I was first reading it at 13, I loved Lyra and Will and all the characters so much I didn't care about any of that.

Oh yes, I'm sure he planned it out in advance! The writing was so precise and careful, and like you said, with all the religion in the story there's no way he didn't put a lot of thought into it. Some plot developments just read as a bit out of the blue to me, I guess. I do think I would have been more forgiving of my critiques of it if I'd read it younger. I just adored Lyra though, and Iorek and Serafina Pekkala and Lee Scoresby and his lovely daemon Hester, and John Faa and Ma Costa and... well, most of the cast! They definitely carried the books through for me even as I started to dislike the plot more and more. Did you read Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time In the North as well? I wasn't as fond of the first, but I thoroughly enjoyed the latter.

The characters are definitely the warm core of those books. Iorek and Lee and Serafina definitely, and Mary and the melufa people in the parallel world...gah, so much love for them all. I even came to like Lyra's parents by the end, despite how selfish and awful they were. (Although in that case, by "like" I mean I respected them as interesting characters, not that I liked them as people.)
I did read the short stories and I remember enjoying them, though honestly now I can't remember what they were about.

Yes, Mary and the mulefa, I almost forgot about them! Also lovely characters. The mulefa are definitely a fictional people I would not mind living with. And I agree with you about Lyra's parents for sure.
Short stories can be hard to keep track of, especially when it's been a while! I loved OUaTitN (sheesh, not an easy acronym) because it was about Lee and Hester (and Iorek!), they have such strong voices. Especially Hester. She made the story each time she opened her mouth. I hope my daemon would be a bit like her, personality-wise!
Since we're talking about His Dark Materials, it was bound to come up: have you ever thought about what your daemon would be?

Chexala: That is such a bummer, I'm sorry! I had a similar thing happen to me with His Dark Materials earlier this year, I wish I'd only read the first book. I've heard The Name of the Wind is amazing, definitely on my TBR! Let us know if it's good the whole way through.
Ziggle (is that an ok nickname to use??) : I just looked it up thinking it would be a horror or mystery novel, but that sounds really good! I shouldn't have hopped into a book chat thread when I'm trying not to buy books. Have you finished it since you posted? Did it get those 5 stars?

That's fine! Usually people call me ziggles, zig, ziggy but any rendition of that is fine.
Nope, it's not a horror book at all! I totally loved it! I gave it five stars.

A bunch of them all at once actually! I signed up for an online pokemon bank account so I've been transferring all the pokemon from the old games forward. It's very time consuming but I'm working towards a complete pokedex eventually!

Me too! It might have to wait until I move again, though. All my stuff is stacked in my dad's garage until I find a job and a new place... At least I have Alpha Sapphire to play until I find Pokemon X again.

It's always hard when you feel a bit off. I've started a few books lately that I just haven't been crazy into and set them aside because I just wasn't feeling them.

Ziggy - oh I hate that! But I also hate not finishing a book... I once went a year without reading simply for the reason that I had picked up a particularly bad one and couldn't get through it, but couldn't bring myself to leave it unfinished and move on.

I recently finished reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and started reading the second book in the (in progress) trilogy, The Wise Man's Fear. I am in love.
I am in awe of Rothfuss' writing and keep stopping to admire his craftsmanship. Fresh metaphors, beautiful sentences, sometimes a whole chapter turns out to be a carefully crafted joke... Guh, I'll just leave it at that before I start gushing all over the place and making a mess.
@Iltu, late answer here, but yes, I have spent a lot of time thinking about what my daemon would be, and have never come to a satisfactory answer. I think the most obvious choice for me would be a house cat, but daemons don't always display a person's obvious personality. If my daemon were showing more hidden traits, I'm not sure what I would end up with. I think about these same things with regards to my Patronus too, although those can change through your life. (But soon, Pottermore is going to have a way to find your patronus, so that's exciting!)

It's pretty typical fantasy stuff, about a guy going off to get his magical education and becoming a living legend, etc. The beauty of the book is in the setup and telling though. Rothfuss sets up a frame narrative, so the protagonist is recounting his adventures to a guy who is writing it all down as the "definitive" true tale of his life. There are these little interludes where they have to take breaks for meals or because someone interrupts them, and there is story stuff that keeps trying to intrude...it's pretty great. I've hardly started the second book and I'm already upset that the third one isn't out yet.

I got a few book samplers from Comic Con on Thursday. Didn't get any ARCs this year but samplers are always fun.
