I've been crocheting the same lap-ghan thing for like... 3 years now. I just never have time to work on it. And now I've started a scarf too..... T______T

Oh, I once made a bag with hemp cord. It was fun. I did it for a 4-H project many moons ago. It has a unique aroma that reminds me of home on the farm.... ^___^

YuenGuon 05-08-2009 02:54 PM

@connie: i usually knit while i'm watching tv or a movie or something =P it's better than just sitting there. so that's how i'm getting things done, and now that school is almost over[just one more exam!] i'll have more time to more knitting!

@bella: those things take a long time =/ i love making scarves though. although i may have too many...[but i sell them at craft fairs =)]
I've never tried hemp, maybe i should because that sounds really interesting. did you take any pictures?

Connielass 05-08-2009 06:24 PM

That's what I'm making my bag with, hemp cord that you get in craft shops, meant for jewelry-making.
I use two, actually: hemp cord and organic cotton yarn.
And yeah, I TRY to knit while I'm watching TV, but as I said, time is just limited, period. I have two jobs and am contemplating a third, which really doesn't leave much time for TV as is, not to mention trying to set aside enough time so that my relationship survives.

YuenGuon 05-08-2009 08:57 PM

ahhh, that does sound hectic.
i'm going to a craft store tmr, i'm trying to think what i should get

Knerd 05-08-2009 10:44 PM

A little bit at a time will help you finish your project faster than you'd imagine.

I have a ton of projects going on at the moment too.
I've got a pair of socks, a baby blanket turned afghan, and a ton of granny squares that will eventually turn in to an afghan.

Connielass 05-09-2009 12:06 AM

Yeah, one or two rows at a time.
Speaking of which!
TV time!
See y'all later!

Knerd 06-02-2009 07:10 PM

Do any of you guys have experience knitting socks?

I made a few adjustments to the Stitch 'N Bitch Knitty Longstockings pattern so that they'll be ankle socks. But right now I'm having trouble understanding their directions for turning the heel. I've tried it a few times and it just isn't coming out right. I don't know if it's because of the way that the book worded it or if I'm doing something wrong, so I could use someone to walk me through it.

Late night snack 06-02-2009 07:11 PM

Have you ever thought of maybe using fabric to border the top of the socks with? Do you have a sewing machine?

Knerd 06-02-2009 07:13 PM

I'm knitting from the top down to the toes, so the cuff is already done. It's the heel I need help with.

Late night snack 06-02-2009 07:15 PM

OHHH. Then a cute satin/cotton fabric would go lovely C:

Connielass 06-02-2009 07:36 PM

Yyeah.. I haven't graduated to socks yet.
I've only just discovered the joys of knitting in a continuous round. Hey! Tube scarves!
I don't think I'll ever get into socks, to be quite honest. Everyone I know, including myself, usually wears through socks so much that it would be pointless.
However, pedicure socks!
Now there's a project I'd like to get into. It'd be cheaper than buying a pair.

YuenGuon 06-02-2009 11:09 PM

i wish i had experience with socks :/ my sister knows all about socks, but i she's not available atm.
what do you mean it's not coming out right? maybe i could ask her? maybe a picture or something?

Knerd 06-02-2009 11:59 PM

If you guys could point me in the direction of helpful tutorials on how to turn a heel, I'd appreciate it. Or even if you've used the Stitch 'N Bitch pattern and know what I'm talking about.

It's very unclear about how the heel is meant to join with the gusset. My problem comes when I try to insert my new needle into the slip stitches along the heel.

YuenGuon 06-03-2009 01:30 AM

which stitch n bitch? i have the books so maybe i could take a look.

Knerd 06-04-2009 02:04 AM

The original, I think.
The pattern would be on page 182.

YuenGuon 06-04-2009 03:02 AM

Ooh! pippi longstockings! i've been edging to try this out.

so is it just turning the heel?

Knerd 06-04-2009 09:01 PM

Well, this is what the pattern says:

Quote:

Turn Heel

K16, ssk, turn.
*Sl 1, p6 p2tog, turn.
Sl 1, k6, ssk, turn.*

You know have 24 sts on the heel needle - 8 center sts and 8 on either side. Rep from * to * until only the center 8 sts rem and you are ready to beg a RS row.

K4, change to D [but I'm staying in the same color], pm, k4 with needle 1.

*Cont with needle 1 and, holding an empty needle in your right hand, insert empty needle from front to back in the next elongated st (the sl st of the heel flap) and k tbl; rep from * 13 times more - 18 sts on needle 1.
The bolded part is my problem area. The way it's written made me think that you just had to add the sl sts in row by row, one at a time. But this didn't come out right. When I finished, the shape was completely wrong. So I just feel like I'm missing a step.

YuenGuon 06-06-2009 06:24 PM

hmm. it might help if i actually knew how to do socks. well, how does it not come out right? like...is it too small or too big?

Knerd 06-09-2009 09:36 PM

You know how a sock's heel is supposed to form a slight C shape?
This pattern makes it turn into more of an O shape, with only a small opening at the top.

It comes out looking like a tube more than anything else. :/

Does embroidery count? I want to learn to crochet, but I know no one to teach me....

I started embroidering a few months ago, when a friend taught me. I'm a beginner, but I really find it fun.

Connielass 06-12-2009 03:14 AM

Well, mostly the Stitch'n'Bitchers are either knitters or crocheters, but for the sake of solidarity among ALL needle/yarn crafts, I welcome you!
I wish I could embroider.
I work at a craft store where we also sell those embroidery cross-stitch patterns. I wish I had the time+mone+skills to get one of those and make something with it.

YuenGuon 06-12-2009 04:21 AM

@knerd: hmm. maybe you should alter it so it just makes the C shape?

welcome nobility!
i used to do cross stitch. like before i learned knitting and all.
what do you embroider?

N • B ! L ! T Y ♥ 06-12-2009 03:36 PM

I do Mexican embroidery. The cross stitching that you see in stores is much more American than what I do.
I'm just learning, and I only know three patterns up to now. My friend is teaching me, and her sister is teaching her... its a chain. ^.^'

I embroider "Servilletas", which means napkins... but there now. Have you ever gone to a Mexican restaurant where the tortillas are wrapped in a pretty cloth? Sometimes they're painted, sometimes embroidered. Well, in some Mexican traditions its a custom to make servilletas so that when you marry you have something to serve your husband tortillas in.

Thank you for welcoming me Connielass and YuenGuon!

YuenGuon 06-12-2009 04:17 PM

ooooh! that sounds awesome!!! I haven't actually seen it myself, but I have an idea of what you're talking about. how did you get started with Mexican embroidery?

N • B ! L ! T Y ♥ 06-12-2009 07:12 PM

Well... I'm Mexican. XD

Well, actually where my parents come from they dont have that custom. But I have a friend who's from Nayarit, and they have that custom there. She lived with us for a while, and she decided to teach me one day. I really liked it, and do it when I want to be calm.

Unfortunately, since she doesn't live with us anymore, its harder to see her. Once I get my third pattern down though, she'll hopefully teach me another.
