I see. So it's a dead end job then.
Basically. I could move up to department manager when my boss eventually retires in the next few years but it will be an incredibly thankless job in which I will constantly be in a uphill battle against higher ups that known absolutely nothing about coffee or coffee shops. Not really what I want to do for the rest of my life as of right now.
Sounds like the same struggle game designers had.
Now a lot of them have been "defecting" from large corporations [lol] |
Well, I'm sure it was really nice at first. They didn't have to worry about money problems and such. But then the big corporation wants to get involved and once they get that first step in, they suddenly feel like they know everything.
But this is worse because where I work is a family operation. Not that I have issues with mom and pop shops but this one just works terribly. We can't shop around for new products; we can only use existing vendors (because someone knows someone). And if we try and bring in new vendors, it gets shot down without a thought from corporate. And they have terrible taste in design too. I wish I had a picture of our ugly coffee bags we got a few months ago. |
If they already have a vendor why do you bring new ones in?
Is there a problem with the current vendor? |
Things like pricing can be an issue. Or we want to bring in a product that we can't get from current vendors. Our department hasn't made money since we re-opened under the new store and as the new coffee shop. So my boss tried to cut where she can.
So basically the uppers are going to run you into the ground...
Well, at least our department. I think the catering keeps people coming. Unfortunately, they bought the store under the idea that all the Starbucks customers would just get their brand of coffee instead. So they assumed our sales would stay the same as when we were Starbucks, which was their first big mistake.
Wait... so they bought a Starbucks to a not a Starbucks and they expect great waves of people still?
Basically? We were a licensed store (like the ones you see in Targets are licensed stores but stand alone Starbucks are company operated) and the company that bought our physical store didn't want to keep it a Starbucks (they had their own idea of a "coffee" shop). It's really complicated. -.-;
Ooh... so retail/Grocery store people trying to run a coffee shop?
Yes, basically. At least when it was with Starbucks, Starbucks still had quite a bit of control over things.
That's gotta be rough [hug] best of luck though.
Well, strangely enough they just posted an opening for a job that would be a bit more my speed... But it looks like it is a very experimental thing. Still trying to decide if it is worth it to try.
[cheer] Good luck with your choice!
I don't really know what to say.
"Hi" would be a good start. Hi monstah~
