Poet: Agree with the whatever works for you approach. I really don't take any issue with anyone who does what they want. Now this is minus harming themselves, other individuals or animals as well as pushing something on someone else.

The article I was reading mentioned that it is probably more of a testing of the question and phrasing that could be holding up those types of questions. People are so easily offended and they really do have a lot of research to do in order to put a question into a census.

I recall someone on here like that but not sure if we are thinking of the same person as being sensitive to gender pronouns...

I mean, on one hand, I see why people get up in arms about gender identity. You want everyone to see you as you see yourself and acknowledge the true you. On the other, I think they also care too much about what people outside their circle of friends (and family) say. But that is coming from a cisgendered person in a hetrosexual relationship who does not give a damn about what other people think most times.

Hm, you bring up an excellent point on the medical side.

I can't imagine that there have been many (if any) studies of the effects on someone after they have transitioned or even in the process of transitioning. It must get very complicated. But then again, I don't truly know how the whole process works (as I am sure it is far more than just replace old parts with new parts).

Kirin: Well, like I said before, seems like inclusion of the LGBTQ questions in the census has been a prior thing. But it's exclusion is noted and with more people trying to obtain rights as both someone in the LGBTQ community and a part of the US, I can see why they want the inclusion.

monstahh`: I guess I don't really venture out of here. Although when I do, I feel like most places on here are very light hearted, easy going conversations. But then again, isn't this place a realm to escape from which we can escape the real world?

the Cheshire Pisces: I do not have arthritis (that I know of) but most likely do have carpel tunnel among other wrist issues that I am sure I don't know about.

Like pink for girls, blue for boys clothing identifiers?

Poet - Why not just DNA test everyone then? Many people aren't XX or XY. They can be stuff like XXY and stuff. Would that help with medical identification?
then we could run more specific studies aimed at the chromosomes. idk
science?

Dae - It is actually more complex. Hormone therapy is a huge part. That is where the gender truly does change, because once the hormones change, so does the way the doctor cares for you.

Another thing about people who are like that is that they feel this must be normal, and because it's normal you must accept me.
The truth is not as friendly. Seeing yourself as another gender is called Gender Dysphoria. It's a mental disorder that can affect someone for any sort of duration of their lives.

Quote:
Gender dysphoria involves a conflict between a person's physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify
It's actually a very well known disorder. But unfortunately people are using it as a way to be unique and feel like a damn snowflake, so a ton of the research is being skewed by these people until they can be filtered out.

Mon - As I mentioned to dae, a DNA test is actually not a viable method. The person could have had hormone replacement therapy, so the types of drugs they are supposed to take will be different from the markings on their DNA.

--------

Now just because I call it a disorder does not imply that it's in any way a negative trait like dementia or something. A person can still lead a relatively normal life. But a person needs to accept that they have a disorder, or they're constantly going to be in denial. Once they have accepted that they have a disorder, they can begin pursuing either treatment, or change, depending on their preferred route.

I was just curious, thank you for answering my question. :)
I know what *I* think, and I know what my friends IRL think, but we live in NC. And there's been a lot of stupid ass nonsense here, so I wanted to make sure I was still roughly on the same page. lol

in terms of mistaking people for other genders...There was this one guy who worked the TSA in San Diego for a while who had the MOST IMPRESSIVE set of dreads i've EVER seen. I'm sure it was him both times I saw him, because I had gone back and forth quite recently and he had the same dreads....both times I first saw him he was looking away...and I totes called him ma'am. Not once but TWICE. omg. D:

ohman i missed your little note to me...thank you that is all very good information.

I think a doctor would be able to see their medical history though, and they should be educated on gender dysphoria and its treatment so hopefully they would be able to make good choices.

Speaking of gender changes and doctors and how they affect drugs and stuff in your body.
There are some drugs women aren't supposed to even touch if they're of childbearing age. Would that still matter? I know some people keep their uterus and womb and such, but identify as male, you would think a doctor would still advise against touching those drugs, right?

just a thought that occurred if no one knows an answer its okay lol

The largest issue with doctors is the "They stand on the shoulders of giants" issue. Many doctors learn what they are taught and then stop learning new things.

Well just because you "identify as male" does not make you male. If they have undergone testosterone therapy they are likely sterile by that point.

We have a label at work which says reproductive hazard on it which typically are the ones that should be handled carefully.

Poet: I can imagine it is immensely complex. I try and educated myself best I can but admit that there will almost always be flaws in the information I learn or have learned.

Being a cisgender person in a heterosexual relationship, it is difficult for me to empathize with the need to want to be accepted as normal but I can certain sympathize with it. I mean, I try and live by the treat others as you would like to be treated standard. Unfortunately, I know a lot of judge-y(?) people (aka coworkers and boss) which tends to put more stress on me because my innate need to treat everyone with respect.

It does cause problems when disorders and medical issues are used to make an individual feel unique or sometimes to fit in, and not just on the medical side. I kind of feel like gluten-free has taken on a fad/popular diet form that takes away from the people who really do have issues with gluten. And it also skews research.

Is there no laws (which I understand is on a state by state basis) for requiring continuing education for doctors/medical professionals?

Cheshire: Eh, usually for me, it's a slip of tongue. I get it from my mom, who once accidentally addressed a transgender (who still had a distinct adam's apple) as a he instead of she. Mind you, this was about 2 weeks after she started working there and she apologized profusely (she has always been horrible with pronouns in speech). It has been about 3 years and I still don't think she has been forgiven. I mean, if I didn't forgive her for calling me one of my brother's names or a he, we would never be on speaking terms.

Depends on the medical board where they practice. So you'd have to find out for each locality.

According to wikipedia, it is definitely on a state-by-state basis to maintain licensing. I was just wondering because in order to maintain my insurance license, I have to take so many CE courses over 2-3 years.

Of course, that isn't to say that they learn anything in these CMEs. I know ours don't have any sort of testing to check if you actually retained the knowledge.

the younger generations of doctors are in general more open-minded and informed about sexual orientation and gender identity other than the binary

---------- Post added 04-11-2017 at 01:00 PM ----------

ideally, a doctor or other medical professional goes through lifelong learning which is one of the reasons someone would go into a health profession in the first place

---------- Post added 04-11-2017 at 01:01 PM ----------

I agree that the gluten-free diet fad is ridiculous. if you don't have celiac disease or some other gluten sensitivity, what is the need to go gluten-free?

---------- Post added 04-11-2017 at 01:02 PM ----------

by the way, doctors are required to take a relicensing exam every 10 years or something. So yes, they don't just go through medical school and residency and then stop learning and taking exams. which is a good thing

Well, we do still have quite a few older doctors out there with a closed minded attitude.

But even relicensing is only required for those who got their licenses after 1990. Before that, there was no requirement for them, so they are not required to retest by being grandfathered into the system. It is also still state by state for most regulations and requirements (which can vary a lot).

Was just reading an interesting article where it looks like the test is going to be dropped in favor of more continuing education (which seems to be better IMO). I mean, that makes more sense than taking a test every 10 years really. Medicine changes day to day and CE courses would make much more sense to stay up to date on what is going on in the world.

I don't understand that need to be normal. There is truly no such thing.

There actually is a law for continuing education. But it's only like 20 hours every 2 years. That's not much and they likely retain little of it.
You do get tested on it, but you can literally keep the sheet up next to you as you answer it so it's kind of stupid.

I know that feel dae, I've been called the family dog before by my grandmother We gotta just accept that people are flawed.

Salv - The reason they go in to be doctors? $$$ and pressure from family to be successful and rich.

Gluten free diets are stupid. Also not very hard to avoid gluten... just eat rice instead of wheat if you want a lower gluten intake.

CE courses would make sense sure... but some of them are expensive. They need to publicly make all CE available to anyone because that medical knowledge should be shared... plus I don't make a ton of money I can't afford to pay for that crap.

I think I need to do 24 every 2 years? Which reminds me that I need to get on that because need to do mine by either September or October...

I mean, I don't believe in traditional testing, especially rote memorization. We are the most informational accessible generation that there has ever been. But the problem is that like every profession, some people go in to it without having the correct mindset. Some people go into it thinking "once I get this piece of paper, I'm done learning."

Lol, when we had a dog, his name use to get thrown into the mix. It was whoever my mom was use to yelling at the most...

I laughed really hard when Chex Mix started advertising itself as gluten free as it had always been gluten free.

I know the CE system has it's flaws. We have courses offered by companies that insurance companies work with (example: restoration company offers free CE course with free lunch). In many cases, it is an opportunity to show how great they are and why you should refer people to them. I know my boyfriend's job offers a lunch and learn at their office every Thursday but it is usually sponsored by a company that they could work with.

The day you stop learning is the day you die. That's why there's so many people walking around who just get up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeating that like a zombie just to pay their bills. There's no drive anymore once you stop learning.

Not all of the chex mixes were gluten free. There were a few with it, but yeah the majority were rice based weren't they?

The issue with this whole fad thing though, is that we end up with the peanut butter pandemic. You ban it, kids stop having it, and more kids become allergic to it. (Not sure why that happens)

My company has lunches and as of yesterday free massages... but that's at corperate. We don't get that, but we do get the emails about how lavishly they are treated.

Yeah, I get that. I enjoy the process of learning about insurance but I hate dealing with angry people or disappointing people. Sometimes its to the point in which I have a hard time sleeping. Hence, medical field would probably not be the best idea for me.

Most of them were either corn or rice based. But they jumped on the labeling portion much faster. Also, I was working in our college dining hall and saw the change (same chex cereal, different packaging).

I remember my sister-in-law trying to find a cake batter that didn't contain red dye #5 because a kid in the class was allergic to it. There are schools that don't even let you bring in lunch because of allergies. I can't imagine raising a child in this kind of environment.

Ah, we have a company we are exclusive with for insurance and I definitely wouldn't want to be at their corporate offices. They keep moving everyone and are trying to centralize almost everything.

The fact she went out of her way to do that is actually rather sweet. If it had red dye in it, that kid would have to sit there and watch everyone else have cake and that would probably be really upsetting.
We've had patients with dye allergies before and had to order special meds for them that were undyed. (Red dye allergies can actually be pretty bad... like trouble breathing)
