I was brought up to be a heavy eater regardless of health content. "If you want to eat or drink, you eat or drink. No one deserves to go through an unsatisfied craving." "Meat is a staple of every meal." Not exact quotes, but ideas like that.
I ended up being so picky I don't like the legendary super heavy foods. Like steaks/ribs and burgers and, what, gravy? and hot dogs piled with toppings. I won't even eat a hot dog in a bun. No bread with my meats, thank you! My sisters are picky, but I'm the worst.
I do really love to eat, though, yes. Mostly cookies, Little Debbies, and candy. Donuts and Pop-Tarts, too. We all love snacking around here. You think of the food and you eat it.
And then I discovered all my snacks taste even better if I eat them like… take a mouthful, then have a sip of Sprite. Which made me love snacking even more. Food is pure ecstasy, man. I know that stuff is pounds, and I reeeeally wouldn't like myself heavy.

Hm, definitely not the rules in our house. Was very much "You eat what I put in front of you. I am not a short order cook." Although we were not entirely discouraged in snacking department, we didn't have too much around.
You sound more particular than picky. You have to eat things in a certain way. I personally do not like brown gravy and typically won't order steaks while out. But if I am at someone house, I eat what is put in front of me, regardless of whether not I really like it. I'm also open to trying new things.
Sounds like a sweet tooth.

Not gonna lie, I had to go back and look at what my last comment was to you because my brain is not so goods at the rememberin's.
Well, interestingly enough, the other day I saw a post about this woman who had 2 pictures of herself. One was when she was at 182lbs and just a bit chubby and one where she was at 180lbs but with defined muscles. Kind of a reminder that the number on the scale isn't the only way to indicate whether or not someone is healthy.
I mean, I know I'm not at the best health or weight I can be. A lot of my weight gain is just from eating too much food (good or bad). I've gone on calorie counting diets and seen the weight fall off without adding much exercise to my regiment. I know I could lose 50lbs (which would put my at the lowest weight I've been since I was 12) and be a bit happier with myself.
edit: Wow, almost to 600 pages. Also updated the front page just a smidgen.
|
That is very true. A person looks and feels very different at those points as well.
Yknow, soda is one of the leading offenders to weight gain It's also horrible for your teeth. Have an aunt that rotted out all of her teeth she drank so much soda.
I've honestly been a LOT happier since cutting most sugar from my diet and 100% of soda from my diet. I rarely let myself have candy and I have a lot more energy overall.

My entire mouth is sweet teeth.
Yeaaah, we were not the kind of family where it's like "take it or leave it" with meals. Momma can't stand that mentality. We were (are) the one where you stop at four fast food places for everybody on the way home. It annoys my momma that she had picky kids, but she'll feed us what we want how we like it.
We go out to dinner at places I don't like and I have to settle for whatever fast food places are still open by the time we head home. Not that I don't think fast food is delicious. Everybody knows it's not a good choice, but it's so GOOD. Cognitive dissonance, yo.
I'm on a soda break rn, but I'm not sure I can quit it. Sprite's really good. A.K.A. the only soda I drink unless we're at a place that instead has Sierra Mist.
I'm also on a fries break rn somehow? Fries is one of the main non-snack things I eat! Chicken and fries. That's my usual meal when I'm out to eat. Chicken fingers and fries with ketchup. Everything else on the menu is stuff I don't eat.

Poet: Yeah, but I know a lot of people that take their weight in pounds very seriously. That the number is way more important than it should be. And that always worries me.
I know soda is an issue. Actually, when I was doing the calorie counting, I was drinking more diet soda than I had previously but was still losing weight. Go figure but I know overall it isn't good for my long term health. A lot of that started happening when I started dating my BF (who is a Dr. Pepperholic).
I don't think I have the will power to cut down my sugar intake a whole lot. Sweets and desserts have always been a weakness of mine...
Amane: My mom wasn't about to cater to 5 kids ranging from 1 year old to 15 years old. You always had the option to make something for yourself if you didn't like dinner but she wasn't going to make anything other than what she made.
And we didn't do fast food/eat out much growing up. As in maybe 2-3 times a year we would eat out and it was considered a treat. I imagine if you eat out more (especially fast food), it's a bit easier to cater to differing tastes. And I've noticed friends of mine who ate out more when they were kids tend to go to multiple fast food places when it comes to getting dinner for the family. Frankly, I don't think I would have the patience or tolerance for that.

Whereas I have a pretty short "I do not eat these things" list. I'll try most things at least once and there aren't too many things I won't eat a second time.

We didn't want to learn how to use the stove or oven. I'm still too afraid to cook while the sisters can cook just fine for themselves now.
We've gone out to eat twice every stupid week for my entire life and before. I'm tired of going out to eat. I prefer to eat at home.
Stopping at several places is only annoying if there's a long line or they mess up. I know what you mean, though. You don't think of it as a waste of time when you're used to it.

That make it yourself rule applied from when I was old enough to walk and talk. If I didn't like what was for dinner, I could make a sandwich. Or anything that was microwavable was free game (soups, noodles, etc).
I complained once about what my mom was making me for lunch (which was a frozen bagel, toasted with cream cheese but I was having it every day). From that day on, it was make your own lunch. While she was certainly laid back a bit more with my younger brother and I, she wasn't having any nonsense about food.
Yeah, if don't know anything different, it doesn't seem like a big deal. I use to visit with a friend and we would make 2-4 stops for dinner for her, myself, her mom, and her younger brother. It was also a 20 minute drive just to get to somewhere (they lived in the middle of nowhere). Can't be bothered with that stuff, lol.

I so take on that mentality any time I do something for somebody and they complain. That's one reason I can't stand giving criticism. It's not like I could've done better.
Twenty minutes is a long commute? The time spent in the car is nothing compared to the time spent in the places where we go. If we're on the other side of town, getting food on the way home takes about an hour. We don't do anything in twenty minutes, food or no food.

Lol, I was 10 years old. I don't really hold 10 year olds accountable for a lot that they say in a moment. I was just tired of having the same thing every day.
To go pick up food to go? For me, that is a yes. I can't imagine spending so much time driving for things like fast food. I live in a city now and get cranky when we try and eat in the city because it takes forever to get anywhere.

It sounds pretty harsh to me, but since I don't know how exactly that incident went down and I know I get pretty upset when people complain about how I do something, I won't judge that.
I can handle the microwave. I know how to use it, I don't have to ask anybody before I do, and it doesn't scare the living daylights out of me. We've had, like, every toaster we ever owned try to burn on us after a few years, so it's scary, too. I have to ask before I use it anyway. I learned I can microwave Eggo waffles.
Oh, just to get food? Yeah, I don't know why the time adds up like that. But for going places in general, twenty minutes doesn't sound bad.

Ah yeah... diet soda is really really really bad for weight loss. Your body doesn't recognize the artificial sugar. So it has a high tendency to cause weight gain.
It's interesting you say about sweets as I was the same way but I tried a Dr pepper a few months ago and... it made me sick I hated it. I used to love doctor pepper but I've instead been drinking a lot of water. My teeth are a lot better off now too.
I also get far less cravings now.

I know but water gets rather boring after a while for me. I've tried those little lemon, lime and orange packets but most of the time I forget.
It's hard for me also because it requires self restraint. My family and BF aren't going to stop eating cakes, cookies, ice cream, and candy. If stuff wasn't in the house, I wouldn't eat it, most likely. But I do get sweet cravings.
For me, it's really a matter of eating things in better portions. I have a tendency to just over eat and I eat quickly. Pretty sure if I were to eat slower, I would be less likely to over eat.

I prefer the bottle. It's just way more satisfying.
Water has those squeezable flavor things. Could keep the flavoring with you anywhere you go. But of course I doubt those are good for you either.
Them not trying to be healthy can make it harder... it's been tough saying no... my mom has a tendency to buy a ton of crap she doesn't need.

Yeah, I don't think those are super great for you either. BF uses them to get himself to drink more water and sub out Dr. P.
I don't think they eat so much sugar to be unhealthy but I lack control around it sometimes. At the same time, I don't think cutting out sugar entirely is necessary to be healthy.

Cutting out sugar isn't needed to be healthy, but to reach the point where self control is an issue, that's when trying to get yourself back on track would be important. Too much sugar boosts risk of rotting teeth. Unless of course you brush every time you have junk food.
I mean I'll get a craving and I'll let myself have a little. A glass of chocolate milk is one of my primary treats now, something healthy with a bit of chocolate.
