An otaku is someone who is obsessed with japanese stuff, but usually people refer to otaku when they are referring to nerds; manga and anime fans also like to call themselves otaku in the us c:

When I think of punk... I think of worn-out skinny jeans and bright messy colors. And punk hair xD

I actually wrote my senior thesis on the punk and beat movements. The actual original concept behind punk was just using things that have a definite meaning or use out of context. So, for example, wearing a loose tie with no collar would be considered punk. So would putting paperclips through your clothes or wearing a swastika.

Anti-fashion is punk. :)

@Cami: that's interesting. I think most subcultures start off as anti-something though? If not it would just be mainstream, however you can define that.

The original punk and beat movements were actually extremely inclusive. Sure they were anti-mainstream, but their whole philosophy was anyone can do anything. Anyone can write. Anyone can play music. Anyone can sing. That's why punk music is somewhat known for screamed lyrics and off-key singing. Because anyone can do it, man. Jack Kerouac's writing tips include, "No fear or shame in the dignity of yr experience, language & knowledge" and "You're a Genius all the time."

That is SO COOL. :heart:
We talked to a guy today who was teased at school because he dyed his hair blue and sang (screamed) in a punk band, but his friends in the band deeply cared about him and he had a friend who would really listen to him talk about how his day was and just nod and say "I hear you." I think the punk/beat scene is one of the most beautiful forms of expression in how real it is, since it's all about just being yourself. [/TL;DR]
