@Deia: Get your app in about a week before the deadline, I'd suggest. But it depends on how big the school is.

Anime, what do you want to do with your degree if you could do anything?

True. I better hurry. The hardest part is finding colleges that I like. I don't even know what I want to major in. Art is a hard field. You can't make art and money if people don't like your style. So I have to finf some other major. And honestly I just can't decide. And I can't find some well known schools that have good art programs

I appreciate good music for both its apparent beauty and the mathematics behind it. In my Music Appreciation course (which was far from my first exposure to music), I wrote an atonal music generator and used it to compose a short piece; sadly, due to the difficulty to play such a piece, I was not able to hear it performed (although I have enough musical experience to have an idea of what it would sound like).

@Urbeth: I'm going to teach music history and film at the University level, while working locally as a free-lance cellist. If that doesn't work, I'll teach cello, either at a school or locally, and write independently on music and film.

The colleges I was looking at did not have strict, early deadlines, although I still would insist on applying no later than September of your Senior year; you may be able to wait longer, but there are only so many openings every year.

Another thing you can do is see if you can attend an "extension" university (where they only offer a subset of the courses required to graduate, normal your general education courses) and then transfer to the school of your choice; this option would not have worked for me but several of my friends did this and it worked out well for them.

I think you may need to pursue at least a master's degree for that. From what I understand--I think I want to be a professor someday--more than a bachelor's is required but if you have a master's an some work experience some universities will hire you. One of my professors told me if I wanted to pursue it, I should look at community education classes and try to get involved teaching--in my case--adults how to use a computer. Eventually, I may get work at a technical college and eventually at a university.

I can't guarantee this will work, but it is what I have been advised.

I should add that I am getting my computer science degree. P: I tried learning the violin once and epically failed. So kudos to you! ^^

@Urbeth: Er, I'm starting my dissertation -- almost finished with the coursework required by my Ph.D. program. I'm also putting together my program for my Master's recital in cello performance next May. I'm well on my way to my chosen careers, thanks. :) I do appreciate the advice.

As my girlfriend would attest to, I am not your average person; I love the atonal stuff; The Rite of Spring is one of my favorite pieces and I would have loved to see its first performance (in Paris, 1913, if I recall correctly).

I see. I don't know, I will have college prep on my senior year, but we get back to school in august. If I were to do them no later than septemper, then I better hurry.

That second way to do it seems a little complicated to me. But I'll look into it

@Flux: Rite of Spring isn't really atonal -- it's just an unusual tonality. And if you'd been to the Paris performance, you wouldn't have heard anything, as the audience was rioting too loudly about the scandalous dancing to hear the music! :P

No worries! I know how that is. I try not to write here the way I write my papers, because that would probably put people off, so I think I come off sounding younger than I am.

I consider the piece to be early atonal; there's not a lot of published atonal music I've been able to find.

I would have loved to see the initial reaction (pre-riot) to the music.

I can't draw, either tonally or atonally. :p

"Tonal" means music based on a system in which notes have tendencies -- like when you hear a song break off halfway through and you feel unfulfilled, that's probably because the chord it was on was full of "tendency tones." Most music you hear in film and TV is tonal music. Atonal has no such tendency tones; in fact, it tries to avoid accidentally constructing them completely.
