Supermarkets here sell their own brand versions of ink. The equivalent one isn't much cheaper than the Epson ones I use but they might be a good deal in some cases.

I guess I could try and trip him up but I don't think that will have the desired effect haha

Amazon might have people selling cheap ink. I know Play.com do but I think they only ship in Europe.
