It's what we call 'Optics'

I hope this doesn't fall under the 'official games thread' jurisdiction. I didn't think it would since it's not really about the future of the game or the game-play itself, but rather what you see in the game.
My apologies if it belongs in the 'official games thread'.

After playing Chopper Challenge more than I probably should be, I found myself starring at the black and white background. (And loosing quite a bit due to this, but we'll pretend that didn't happen, neh?) It was then that it occurred to me that the chopper wasn't actually moving forward any, just moving up and down in a straight line. It was the background that was rushing past.

But, because my mind automatically assumes that because the helicopter is an object of movement and transportation, I initially saw the chopper as moving instead of the screen.

Now I know that, logically, it's a pretty simple thing to figure out and even though I know the background is moving I still see the helicopter move.
So I find myself wondering how many people actually see the helicopter as moving instead of being in the same vertical line. Anyone?

I've always just seen it as moving to the right, only because, as you mentioned, there's the illusion of movement because of the leftward-movement of the objects.

The same concept is used in animation. Take buildings in a city for instance; by moving the background at a slower rate than the foreground (shorter buildings), it gives the illusion that someone is moving through the city rather than buildings just moving on their own. It's sort of funny, isn't it?

yay for illusions. It's rather sad how easy it is to fool the mind.

Eh, as a geek who has played a LOT of scrolling games, I've always seen the terrain as the vertically / horizontally mobile thing that you need to move around your ship / character / chopper. Makes it easier for me to visualize incoming fire in most of the games, and plan escape angles. :)
