If you want a dead forum try the arts ones one of thm hasn't had any posts since march....which is such a shame as I would totally be busy there.

I don't know of it would be an effective solution, but maybe offering double gold in the freshmeat thread might get some people over there?

April Fool 04-11-2014 05:32 PM

Eastriel: Wouldn't people then just
once again stop going when the double gold stopped?

Eastriel 04-11-2014 05:39 PM

Unless it was made a pregnant thing or something, it would benefit the newbies too, because one of the things that really put me off mene when I first joined was having nothing and not knowing anyone well enough to strike up conversation and therefore it took forever for me to get clothes.
So double goals would both encourage the posters and benefit the newbies.

Lexadis 04-11-2014 05:40 PM

That would be nice for the newbies, but then again all the people might clog up there [lol] I wouldn't know >.<

A pregnant thing? O_o

I think I just really like the double gold days like we had last week. It encouraged me to start exploring other forums to find other conversationalists without spamming.

Kenome-Chan 04-11-2014 06:28 PM

Woot.
I was thinking about seeing if I could make another account just for welcoming them.
I have my main and my mule.
But I'd make an account just for welcoming them.
Any gold I'd make would go to them.
Well,
After make a good avatar on it.
Then I'd give the gold away.

But I'm still thinking on it because I don't get on as often.
I've been pretty busy.

McNugget 04-11-2014 06:50 PM

I used to welcome the new members here for the first few years I was here. After a while I just stopped welcoming them and I don't remember if there was a reason why I stopped or not [sweat]
I'll try to remember to welcome the fresh meat more often~

April Fool 04-11-2014 06:50 PM

Kenome-Chan:
If you do that, please let me know. :)
We could share an account to do that. [:D]

Oh that would be nice.
Since I have school and stuff to worry about.

It'd be fun for me, too. :)
I enjoy doing different things in different accounts,
and a lot of times, giving to newbies is just so [drool]. ^^

Darkness Within 04-11-2014 11:24 PM

I've been in there greeting the newbies plenty and from my observation most of their threads get plenty of responses.
April Fool and Kenome-Chan your idea is amazing.

jellysundae 04-12-2014 01:04 AM

You wouldn't be able to do that guys, nope. [no] Two accounts only. [sup]

_Mem_ 04-12-2014 02:08 AM

When I was new I must admit I was a little frustrated that it was hard to get anywhere to dress your av nicely. But I stuck it out and am still here. Maybe a help the Newbie thread would be good in Fresh Meat section where they can ask questions & for av help (I know there are other place but being new can be a bit intimidating and does take a while to get somewhere.)

I'm more of a lurker as not on much due to work and feel weird sometimes jumping into a convo people are having but will try and go to the Newbie thread and see what I can do (when not working) :)

...or not!

What is it with the Fresh Meat forum, guys? Give it to me straight, I can take it, does it smell in there or something?

Getting people to actually greet new users and make them feel welcome has always been a pretty big problem on here. [sweat]

Typical example here.
Newbie: Hi, I just joined, I don't really know what to say!
Everyone else: -tumbleweed-

Threads like this increase activity in FM for a little while, a week or so >< then it peters out again to just being a small handful of people doing all the legwork in there.

Taking the big brave step of making an introductory thread on a new site can be really intimidating (I never made one on here [ninja]). So when you face your fears and make one, and no-one responds...[gonk]

Making people feel welcome when they first join goes a huge way towards getting them to stick around/log in again.
Inso says a person's experience during the first 30 minutes on a forum basically decides if they're ever gonna come back, and he's the boss, he knows about this stuff. :O

So don't forget about Fresh Meat, yeah?

You know you're totally free to make newbie-related threads in there yourself: some hangouts maybe, absolutely no reason why there can't be some of those in Fresh Meat. I'd love to see that forum more active. =3

Cherry Who? 04-12-2014 02:12 AM

Another tip, guys, scroll down to the bottom of the main forum listings page to where the online users list is. Right above that, it'll list the most recently registered user. If you click on that and leave them a nice little visitor message, that can go a long way! Especially since it helps reach out to the people who are too shy to make threads. [:)]

Got to admit that I think permanent double gold earning in the Fresh Meat forum is an excellent idea. It would help newbies get gold for some cheap clothes quicker, and encourage others to come welcome them more. If Inso says that the first 30 minutes are the most crucial, well... it's a little tricky to earn enough to get some clothes in the first 30 minutes, you know? That first 100g can seem impossible.

I cry..
But at least it's a cool idea.
Maybe someone else can do that.
Or I just use my mule.
If I do that though I can't let others help me.
Haha.

jellysundae 04-12-2014 03:08 AM

Cherry, it's not possible to alter the gold amount for individual forums though [no] it's on or off, no other options. And if gold earning was double in there, no-one would post anywhere else on the site ><

Would be better, maybe, if new accounts got more per post for their initial posts. But that would give a very wrong first impression of gold earning, and lead to some bad feelings once people were earning "normal" gold, I think.

There's no easy fix really. :O

Nephila 04-12-2014 03:39 AM

To bad there wasn't a way to make an optional "newbie alert" (optional so that if it annoyed people it wouldn't pop up for them)

That way people could post on their walls. :)

How about "care packages"? Maybe give the new users a selection of items -- or a partial refund on their first few purchases in the shops?

Octavia 04-12-2014 04:40 AM

I'm fresh meat and I love greeting newbies, extra gold and everyone is happy!

jellysundae 04-12-2014 05:24 AM

Mark, the issue always boils down to how would you do something. Whatever it was it would have to be done manually per person, and that's always troublesome.

But if people chat with newbies they soon earn gold for clothes :)

Neph, that's a sore point for me : / I've always wanted an optional dashboard notification for new FM threads, but I never got it. Inso did do a version of what I asked for, but he put it in the chatroom that we had for a while. You remember, the one hardly anyone used because no-one knew about it. Inso didn't announce it because he wanted to see how many people found it on their own. Consequently, only about 10 people did. -.- When he put the feature that I wanted on the dashboard, in there, I could have killed him. ><

onsenmark 04-12-2014 06:18 AM

...we had a chatroom? [shock] [:?:]

jellysundae 04-12-2014 06:54 AM

We did, it was several years ago though.

Nephila 04-12-2014 07:18 AM

I remember it now! Aww dang. I would be more responsive to a little ping like from FB/IM things.

The_Crow 04-12-2014 07:34 AM

I remember the chat/IM thing that was a little bar on the bottom of your browser. It was cool, but I heard that it was too expensive/too resource demanding for as little use as it received.

I also remember having very difficult times and spilling my heart and soul to an NPC. Yes, I know it's an NPC. To whichever staff person was behind the account, I am SO, SO SORRY! My life is (just a little) more calm these days.
